Sam Smith just dropped his new single and some MAJOR news on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show

2017 marks the year of much-anticipated comeback (Ed Sheeran, Lana Del Rey and Taylor Swift, we're looking at you) but few have been as shrouded in mystery and excitement as much as Sam Smith's.

That's right, the soulful crooner has made a glorious return to our lives and our airwaves with Too Good At Goodbyes and yes - before you ask - it will make you cry. (It's just a universal truth we all have to stomach, guys. Sam Smith and Adele WILL cause our eyeballs to over spill with water. It's par for the course. Just ACCEPT IT ALREADY!)

“It was a deep few years” – Sam Smith returns to the fray

Sam Smith joins Grimmy on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show to chat about his new album.

Dishing all the deets to Grimmy, Sam gave us an insight into what the night before a long-awaited single release looks like:

More than ever with this album and with this song, it's like I'm publishing my diary
Sam Smith

"Last night was horrific, actually horrific. I had my family and friends with me and I just had to ask them to leave at 11 o'clock because I felt physically sick. And then I weirdly woke up at 4AM and just had to eat a Snickers bar. I'm nervously eating and drinking coffee. But I feel relieved this morning and I'm just so happy for it to be out there."

Other chocolate bars are available, ofc...

"It's because the record is so personal and, more than ever with this album and with this song, it's like I'm publishing my diary. That's how it feels. It's more personal this record as an album than the first one."

So, what exactly has Sam been doing since 2014?

Not a lot, actually. (Well, other than writing and recording what's sure to be a hit album...)

While Ed Sheeran spent his time off hanging with Peter Jackson (that's the director responsible for bringing Lord of the Rings to life, FYI) in New Zealand, strapping himself to the front of one of Jackson's planes and then, well, flying (true story), Sam opted for a slightly slower pace of life.

"I pretty much sat in my pants, watching Bake Off. That's kind of it. I've just been here in London with my family, going out clubbing and eating McDonald's."

Sam Smith is all of us, right?

"This last year has been, for once, it hasn't been about me. It's been about my family, my friends, being there for them and I've been to my sister's graduations and been there for all of my friends ups and downs. And it's going to be about me again now, basically. I'm excited because it's like I'm unemployed and I think my family are sick of me sitting on the couch."

But how do you even begin writing a follow-up album?!

With 12 million global album sales, a No.1 album, 5 UK No.1 singles, an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, 3 Brit Awards, 3 Billboard Music Awards, 4 Grammy Awards and 6 Mobos (we're exhausted just typing that out), it's safe to say that there's been a lot of hype around Sam's upcoming material.

Firstly, how do you even begin the immense task of topping an album that was so stratospheric?

"The way I write my music is I come up with the titles and then I write the album under the title. I had the title In The Lonely Hour way before I started writing the album, really. So I had a title probably about two, two and a bit years ago and it's the same title. I give my team a massive headache, I message them probably once a month saying 'I'm not sure it should be the title!' even to the 'point where it's gone to print and I've messaged them..."

Secondly, WHERE does one person store all of those gongs?!

"I don't have them all. I've given a few to family members and some are in storage. I think when I'm 70 and no one is listening to my music anymore, I'm just going to go into the storage unit and lay in them."

Talking of family, it turns out one of them didn't like Stay With Me...

No offence, Sam's dad, but we're glad your son didn't take the criticism on board. Stay With Me is EVERYTHING!

Most of the songs I've kind of signed out of them emotionally and I can sing them
Sam Smith

Talking about the emotional toll his ballads take on him, Sam revealed that he's already basically checked-out of the sadness before he takes to the stage and performs them:

"Most of the songs I've kind of signed out of them emotionally and I can sing them. There's one tune on this album that, whenever I sing it, I just can't get myself out of that place because it's really quite intense but it's still my favourite song to sing."

Emotional labour aside, it seems as though Sam might be more concerned about the impact all this crooning will have on his chords...

"I can't express enough how difficult it is on the muscle. You could be the healthiest person in the world and, y'know, when I saw Adele cancel those shows it's heart-breaking and it's just intense. You have to be an athlete when you're touring, so I'm nervous for my tour because I know there's going to be times when I wake up and my voice is croaky.

"I can't drink alcohol. I can't have cheese. I can't have spicy foods. Basically anything fun, I can't have. I'm going to be drinking chamomile tea and watching Sex and The City."

And Sam shared some pretty major news while he was chatting to Grimmy...
