Wolf Alice gave us serious chills with their Green Day cover in the Live Lounge

Wolf Alice are no strangers to the Radio 1 Live Lounge. During their career, they've performed live for us several times - and have covered the likes of Beyoncé, Years & Years, One Direction and alt-j. Today, they added Green Day's Good Riddance to that impressive list.
"Good Riddance was one the first songs I learned on the guitar," frontwoman Ellie Rowsell told Clara Amfo ahead of the band's performance.
"I think quite a few people in the band learned it on the guitar, back in the day.
"It's quite a nostalgic song for us."

It may not seem like there's a direct line between 1D and Green Day, but Wolf Alice explain what these (and their other cover choices) have in common.
"It's about the songwriting," said bassist Theo Ellis, backstage after the performance.
"When you strip something back and get it into its raw aspects, if it really holds up in that, it's a sign of good songwriting."

Wolf Alice are a band who know a thing or two about good songwriting, having become one of the UK's favourite indie bands following the release of their debut album My Love Is Cool.

During their Live Lounge session, they performed a spine-tingling version of Bros from My Love Is Cool, a song that has a special connection between the band and Radio 1.
"I remember when we put one of the very first demos of Bros on Soundcloud. It got 100 plays, and this was years before anything happened with us," said guitarist Joff Oddie after the session.
"Out of nowhere we woke up in the morning and Huw Stephens had played it. He'd found the demo and played the tune."
"We didn't have a manager; we didn't have anyone working for us," added Ellie.
"I think we'd played a handful of acoustic shows so he must have just found it, instead of someone presenting it to him."

Wolf Alice also performed their new single, Beautifully Unconventional, a song written about a friend of Ellie's.
"I pictured us as a classic outcast duo in school, like Heathers," she said.
And the girl in question knows she's now the subject of a 10/10 pop song.
"We've talked about it," said Ellie.
"She went 'ooh' when I told her about it."

But Wolf Alice's Live Lounge performance wasn't just about the music - the band also gave us a heartwarming moment when Clara hooked the four-piece up with one of their biggest fans, who has a special connection with their music.
