6 things we learned about John Boyega from his chat with Grimmy

Grimmy asks John Boyega to spill the beans on Star Wars: The Last Jedi
"It's gonna be more epic..."
As far as guests go, it's safe to say that Grimmy gets some pretty impressive names through his studio doors for a chinwag. This week's big name? None other than John Boyega.
Spilling the beans on everything from his latest film, Detroit, to the process behind taking your parents to a film premiere (Do they join you on the red carpet? Do they head straight in to the cinema? Do they coordinate with your clothes?!) and, naturally, a little detour into Star Wars territory, the Brit actor gave Grimmy a thorough 411. Here's what we learned...
1. Detroit is nothing like any film he's worked on before

World's away (literally) from Star Wars, Boyega dished on what you can expect from his latest film, Detroit, and why it's such an important watch...
"Well Detroit is based off of the 1967 rebellion that took place in Detroit, but that is actually the backdrop to this particular story during that time based on an unfortunate incident that happened at the Algiers Motel, in which three young black men were killed and many other people were tortured and questioned in a harsh way. So it goes in-depth into that story and the reasons as to why systematic racism and social unrest caused something like this."
2. He's got an answer for everything (no, really)

It's standard procedure for stars to get given media training - from working on their pronunciation to being fast on their feet when it comes to tackling tricky questions - but, aside from refusing to shift his Peckham inflection, John is pretty sure in his abilities to answer anything that's thrown his way:
"I'm from Peckham: whatever you ask me, I've got an answer for. Even if I don't know the answer I'll be like 'well, there's something about not knowing that's so important to me.'"
Life-hack, alert!
3. He's hell-bent on playing a villain

"I just want to be part of the whole buffet" - John Boyega on his love of acting on the big screen
Speak with an American accent for a month? No problem!
Yup, the next role for the Star Wars superstar could well be a villainous one.
I'd love to play a character that has an innate level of ignorance. I'm curious about villian roles now. I think it'd be cool.John Boyega
"I'd love to play a character that has an innate level of ignorance. I'm curious about villian roles now. I think it'd be cool."
After cementing himself as a - ahem! - force to be reckoned with in Hollywood, John feels prepped and ready for his role as a bad boy and, TBH, we're excited 'bout it...
"So far I've been exploring versatility - I've been training a while, getting prepared for other roles - now I just feel that I'm at the point where I can extend the variety of roles that I can play and Detroit and Star Wars - that contrast - is what you'll be seeing throughout the next few years."
4. The logistics behind taking your parents to a premiere are tricky
The red carpet looks like a scary place at the best of times (so many people, so many cameras) but navigating it with your parents in tow? Now that's gotta be tough. Enter Boyega, suitably schooling us on premiere etiquette...
Lesson #1: Colour coordination is not key.
"Currently right now they're at home getting ready for the Detroit premiere, so my dad was asking me about colours today, 'Burgundy or blue?'. I'm like 'Dad, just get your ass down to the premiere, OK?!'"
Lesson #2: Side entrance? Back door? Red carpet stroll? When it comes to plotting your red carpet course, let your parents do their own thing.
"It's like my sister today, 'Do you want them dropped by the red carpet when you're on there or do you want us to just take them straight inside?' Let 'em do what they want, it's a time for them to be proud and if I was a parent I'd be all over my kids, man."
5. He spoke in an American accent for an entire month

Anyone else diabolical at accents? Ugh, SAME. But being shoddy at accents isn't really acceptable when you're an actor and practice makes perfect, which might be why John and fellow Brit co-star Will Poulter kept their American accents for the entirety of filming for Detroit.
"Everyone was American - basically throughout the whole thing, everyone was pretty much American - especially on set, so I don't know. None of the Britishness came into it and so, y'know, everyone was American and we stayed in our accents. I mean for me anyway, I stayed in it. Will stayed in it from the airport. When I met him, from the first day, he was American. Like, fully."
Just how long exactly did Boyega flex his finest American vocals? "For me it was a month. Will, longer."
6. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is going to be the most epic of all the films
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is on lock-down, as far as inside deets are concerned. Still, that didn't stop Grimmy pleading with John to throw him a hypothetical bone and give us a scoop on the eighth film in the franchise.
"I mean, I can't. All I can say really is that it's gonna be more epic than seven. I just feel like it's moving the story forward. We've got a different director - we've got Rian Johnson - so there's always a different take, a fresh take, but yeah it's gonna be quite epic."
"I'm begging you to be there when Star Wars opens, please!"
Anything for you, John.
