Royal Blood gave us the noisiest Live Lounge session of the year

We kicked off Live Lounge Month with a monstrous session from Foo Fighters but Royal Blood's performance may have been even noisier than what Dave Grohl delivered.

The Brighton band followed the likes of Miley Cyrus, Jay-Z, The Killers and 30 Seconds To Mars as part of Radio 1's biggest month of live music of 2017. It was heavy, to say the least, and we loved it.

There were no acoustic covers today, no sir.

The boys visited the Live Lounge fresh off a tour with Queens Of The Stone Age, and we're just pleased they were able to join us after all the partying on the road.

We've been drinking ungodly amounts of tequila with Josh Homme
Mike Kerr

"We've been drinking ungodly amounts of tequila with Josh Homme and the boys," frontman Mike Kerr told Nick Grimshaw when he called to wake him up before the Live Lounge.

"It's been one of the most chaotic tours we've ever done.

"We very soon realised that our bands are like the two kids from school who shouldn't be sat by each other. The trouble began before the tour even started."

But whatever happened on that tour, it made a Live Lounge session seem tame in comparison.

"I've seen other people do it before and they seem terrified and nervous but we're used to being in those scary situations now - but that's half the fun for us," he added.

Mike and Ben smashed out their new single I Only Lie When I Love You

Of course, this wasn’t the first time Royal Blood have performed a Live Lounge session. Although they clearly didn’t rate their previous Radio 1 performances as we did.

“To be honest with you I'm amazed that they invited us back,” Mike said backstage after the performance.

“It's a massive platform in the UK and for us to be even heard doing anything in the middle of the day is pretty impressive.”

Royal Blood tackled a v.serious question from Joe Lycett before their session

But, as they become more familiar with Live Lounge performances, they have also become more vocal about what changes they would make to the décor. It seems, as it currently stands, things aren’t quite to their taste.

“What I am a little bit disappointed about is that it is less of a lounge, it's more like a studio nightclub now than a lounge,” says Ben.

“There are no sofas. I think they need to go back to the lounge.”

We’ll call the decorators.

Royal Blood performed their classic hit Little Monster

The band decided to cover The Knacks’ My Sharona during a trip to New York, where (and it looks like we’re back to talking about alcohol again) a “very drunk man who was with us” recommended the track.

“When I really thought about it, it has quite a similar aesthetic to what we do,” said Ben after the performance.

“It's almost like you think you're going to be punched in the gut and then someone flicks you on the nose.

“That's what that song does and that's what we try to do.”

Their cover of My Sharona was a noisy moment of amazingness

And next time you're in boys, we'll try and make sure the soft furnishings are up to scratch.
