The Script perform the 'perfect pop song' as they take over the Live Lounge

They came, they sang, they conquered.

Yup, The Script paid Radio 1's Live Lounge a visit and we experienced ALL THE FEELS in the process. But were they nervous? Absolutely, according to drummer Glen.

"I think the Live Lounge is even more daunting than doing a live show. It's a very strange dynamic because there's only so many people in the studio but you know that this is going out on the radio and it's going out to all these people... A very unique experience."

Taking us on a journey through 'sexual sadness' (more on that later), revisiting their breakout hit and putting a unique spin on a 2Pac classic, here's what went down during their epic session.

They brought the, ahem, Rain with them

We've never been more excited about rain, TBH.

We coined the phrase 'sexual sadness'. It means that it's quite a sexy song but it's actually a really sad song
The Script

Talking us through the meaning behind the music, Danny, Mark and Glen explained how the inception of Rain helped them coin the term 'sexual sadness':

"Obviously it's making a comparison between being brokenhearted and rain and every drop that falls down feels like pain but, like I say, we coined the phrase 'sexual sadness' . [It] means that it's quite a sexy song - the track is very sexy - but it's actually a really sad song when you sit down and listen to the lyrics. So that's kind of the meaning behind it."

They took us back in time with Breakeven

When you think of The Script, do you think of Breakeven? Thought as much. Turns out that you're not alone. The Script do, too.

"It's just one of those songs that is going down so well. So when you say the word 'classic' to us, it's off our first record - we're now on album number five - so we thought going for the first record was kind of interesting."

What does it feel like to pen a 'perfect pop song'? The Script know...

Marking a turning point in their career, the trio reflected on the importance of this heart-breaking hit and its unlikely destination.

"It represents us getting off the couches that we were all sleeping on, y'know? That song put clothes on our back, put a roof over our heads.

"We keep getting these amazing reports over the years that this song was taught in Berklee [College of] Music as the perfect pop song. We don't know how because we didn't sit down and try and structure that song, it was just something that we wrote in our deepest darkest moments. So the song represents a change of life for us."

It gets top marks from us.

They took on 2Pac's 'Changes' and blew our minds in the process

(Warning: Third party video may contain adverts)

In a plot twist that we definitely didn't see coming, the guys took on 2Pac's 'Changes' as their cover and *spoiler alert* smashed it.

But with a smorgasbord of slammin' songs to choose from, how do you go about picking just one to cover? Cue Danny with all the answers:

"You can look at it and go 'what are The Script doing taking a rap song?' and we were kind of thinking the same but when you read the lyrics, particularly the second verse and the third verse, the lyrics are just about racism and war in the Middle East. It's about tolerance, about coming together, and those words are probably needed more now than they were 20 years ago when he wrote them."

They dished on that time they performed for THE QUEEN!

Danny from The Script remembers serenading the Queen in the Live Lounge

Last time they played in the Live Lounge the Queen showed up!

Radio 1 has facilitated some pretty epic meet-ups in its 50 years. Just last week, we reunited the Foo Fighters with the naked guy who almost stole the show (emphasis on the 'almost') during their Glastonbury set.

Weirdly enough, the room we're playing in today, that's where we played for the Queen
The Script

Another epic moment? Well, that time The Script performed for the Queen (yep, the actual Queen) in the Live Lounge back in 2K13 has got to be up there, surely? Seems the guys agree...

"Weirdly enough, the room we're playing in today, that's where we played for the Queen. So this was all part of Radio 1 calling us to come in and they flew to Belfast to meet us and they said 'guys, you've been requested to play for royalty'.

"We arrived here on the day and no one told us so we were in there playing and we decided to play Bowie's 'Heroes'... and then about an hour or two hours before the Queen actually arrived they said 'you're playing for the Queen'! That was, as you can imagine, such a mad moment of our lives."

Ever wondered what it feels like to perform in front of the Queen? Wonder no more! The Script are on hand to give us a first-hand account...

"I'll never forget being in that room and her presence in the room. I'll never forget that for the rest of my life. She's on our money! She's the most famous person out there! The vibe just changed completely in the room when she walked in and it was just a surreal moment. I guess we owe that massive moment to Radio 1 in a way because they're the ones that called us and brought us in for that."

You're so welcome, guys.
