FAQs
How can I find out what work placements are available?
There will be a full breakdown of work placements, and the qualities needed for each, at all of the Employability Events.
Why is there an age limit on the posts?
This is in line with the BBC’s Child Protection Policy. The BBC cannot ensure DBS-checked staff members are present to monitor those aged under 18 at all times. As we cannot guarantee this, all posts can only be available for those aged between 18 -24.
Is there an upper age limit?
Yes, the Employability events are focused on an audience between the ages of 16-24, therefore applications can only be received for those aged between 18-24.
Will there be a chance to see any of the artists on stage during the work placement?
You will have a break for 1 hour, when you’ll be able to watch artists on stage; however we cannot guarantee that your break will coincide with the set of your favourite artist(s). This is primarily a work placement and this isn’t a free ticket to the Biggest Weekend.
I’m not eligible to work in the UK, can I still apply?
The placement offers will be subject to your eligibility to live and work in the UK. On or before your first day of your placement, you will be asked to provide us with either your passport and, if relevant, any other original document(s) (which confirm your right to work in the UK); or a full British birth certificate plus documentary evidence of your national insurance number (e.g. P45, P60)
Will I be able to bring friends or family to see me backstage?
Unfortunately, for security reasons you will not be permitted to bring guests backstage.
Will you be providing refreshments?
Yes, we will provide vouchers in the backstage catering area for lunch and/or dinner depending on your working hours. The catering team can accommodate most dietary requests. Free hot drinks and water will be available all day on site.
Will I be able to claim travel or accommodation expenses to and from the Biggest Weekend?
As these opportunities are for local people, we are not able to cover accommodation or travel costs. Where your shift finishes at 23.00 or later we will provide a taxi home.
I don’t live in the local area but I came to an Employability event, can I still apply for these work placements?
Yes, you can apply for the work placement positions but you must be able to attend a 1 hour induction day and both days during the main event.
Will I get to meet some celebrities?
Possibly, but you should remember that this will be a professional work placement and therefore you are expected to behave professionally at all times, including around BBC Presenters and Biggest Weekend artists.
Is there a restriction on how many placements I can apply for?
You will be able to rank your placements 1-5 as some roles may be more popular than others. If you only select 1 work placement you may reduce your chances. However, you should only apply for a maximum of 5 roles that you would most benefit from participating in.
Are you looking for people with events management experience?
No, you don’t need to have experience to apply…this is your chance to get experience! We are looking for people with a good attitude and a passion for working in events, music and broadcast.
What Radio Network will I be working with if I'm successful?
Production, Artist Liaison, TV and Online teams are split across all 4 sites, however each BBC Radio Network is based in a different host city, apart from Radio 2 and Radio 3 which share sites. Those applying in Swansea will be working with Radio 1 teams, for Perth and Coventry it will be split between Radio 2 and Radio 3, and those applying in Belfast will be working with 6 Music.
Will I be able to get a reference after the placement?
Due to the scale of the Biggest Weekend and the amount of placements available we will not be able to offer any references, however you will be able to include this work placement and experience on any CV.
