From making rules to making history: Dua Lipa chats to Grimmy on the Breakfast Show

Dua Lipa is on the fast track to world domination and we are HERE. FOR. IT.

And yet, despite being one of the busiest humans on the planet, the musician of the moment still found time to swing by Grimmy's studio for a chat and a cuppa (strictly lemon and ginger for Dua, plz) before last night's BRIT Awards.

Dua Lipa made history as the most nominated female solo artist ever at the 2018 BRITs and, on the night itself, she came, she delivered her New Rules, she conquered; scooping the award for British Female Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act.

Here's what she had to say to Grimmy about taking to the Live Lounge with her famous friends, touring the world and taking time off for hangovers...

First up, Dua performed in the Live Lounge recently and invited a few famous faces along for the ride...

She very recently treated us to a live performance of New Rules and a cover of Do I Wanna Know by Arctic Monkeys but Dua pulled out all the stops when it came to her latest hit, IDGAF.

I thought it would be fun to do IDGAF but call my mates down to do it with me
Dua Lipa

That's right: Charli XCX, Zara Larsson, and ALMA all shared a stage with Dua to bring us the girl group of our DREAMS. How did such epicness come about, you ask? Dua dished to Grimmy...

"I wanted to do something special for the Live Lounge. I thought it would be fun to do IDGAF but call my mates down to do it with me. So I just text everyone like ‘I’m gonna do a Live Lounge, I’m gonna do a little special one - do you guys want to come and sing IDGAF with me?’ and they were like ‘yeah we’ll come down, that’ll be fun, let’s do it!’ and I was like great, this is so easy!"

Did someone say 'friendship goals'?!

And yep, in case you were wondering, they all really ARE pals

"Oh absolutely. I’m friends with all of them and hang out with all of them... We would just stop and chat for 10 minutes and then people would be like ‘okay, come on now!’"

It’s been good to see women come together in all industries
Dua Lipa

Can we be invited to the next gathering, please? From spats and feuds to rivalries and rumours, celebrity female friendships have been put under the spotlight and scrutinised since day dot, but Dua's hopeful that there's an end in sight for medias depiction of women:

"I think it’s just media in general over the years, even down to beauty products. It’s like ‘you need this beauty product to be better than this other girl!’ - we’ve been pit against each other for so long and it’s so great what’s happening in light of unfortunate events.

"It’s been good to see women come together in all industries and I just think it’s important to be friends."

Right, now let's chat about all things BRIT Awards...

Was Dua nervous? Affirmative: "It’s terrifying. Just talking about it I’m terrified!"

She was nominated for British Single, British Album, British Video, British Female Solo Artist aaaand British Breakthrough Act. (We're exhausted just listing it all, TBH.) These five noms have made Dua the most nominated female solo artist in BRITs history. Impressive stuff, no? She walked away last night a winner, with two awards to her name, and performed on the night, too.

What does getting ready for such a big performance involve exactly? Candles and a cuppa, apparently.

"I do love candles but that’s about it really. Lots of cups of tea! I need lots of tea. Lemon and ginger. You have to speak in your Mary Poppins voice [beforehand]. My vocal coach would be so proud of me right now!"

Is a BRIT-born hangover on the horizon? Maybe, but she's prepared...

“The day after the BRITs it’s hangover day” – Dua Lipa is taking a day off!

And no Grimmy, she won't be coming in for an interview tomorrow.

If anyone deserves a day off, it's Dua. She's already booked out a day in her very busy schedule to account for any alcohol-induced illness but after achieving more in two months than we ever thought possible, we think it's more than understandable.

It’s been the craziest, most challenging month of my life
Dua Lipa

Let's break Dua's 2018 accolades down for you: she's made BRIT history with her noms, bagged two BRIT awards and made YouTube history as the youngest female artist to reach a billion (A BILLION!!!) views on her video, New Rules; she's appeared on SNL; she's appeared on Jimmy Kimmel; she's appeared on The Ellen Show; aaaand she's toured America.

"It’s been the craziest, most challenging month of my life. I started off the year quite chilled in the studio, writing lots of new music and that was really fun and then I went on tour straight away and that was crazy and exciting and fun. Then I went and did SNL - my god, that was such a milestone for me! - but I think my nerves got the best of me. I was absolutely terrified."

Reminder to self: even record-breaking, history-making superstars get the jitters. Thanks, Dua!
