This a mahoosive week...
...for The Breakfast Show and Children In Need. In fact it's probably our biggest week of the year. Our Le Mans - if you like.
Come Thursday ourselves and seven of the most generous souls imaginable, along with their partners, will take to the road in this year's Magnificent Seven Breakfast Show Drive and Dine. We broadcast the beginning from my garage at 6.30 Thursday morning before setting off for The New Forest via Nick Mason's - he of Pink Floyd and ace car collection, Laverstoke Park - Jody Scheckter's place, whilst also taking in Longleat along the way. We round off day one arriving at Chewton Glen for our first overnight on Thursday.
Already thinking - sleep, sleep, must sleep.
Peace and Love

Ignoring the vulgar comment about "masquerading as charity", from what I can see when those beautiful (money raising) works of art pull away from Chris and Tash's house. They've not only planted a few trees; they've bought and therefore must maintain the forest that surrounds their garden.
Probably worth pointing out also, that in his wilderness years, Chris managed a Christmas tree farm (probably not the correct terminology, but you understand I'm sure) on his estate, where he grew, tended to, then sold the trees completely for charity. Whilst at the same time, running a shuttle bus to the local town for the elderly residents.
Magic bus driver he was apparently.
As I say, good luck for Thursday Chris.

It may be somewhat pedantic to point out that by quoting the phrase masquerading as charity you are not actually ignoring it.
Personally, I don't consider a motor car to be a work of art. In my opinion a car is just a mode of transport. Please don't belittle the works of Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo et al by comparing their works to a lump of metal.
As for Christmas trees, the benefit gained from the CO2 absorption is offset by the use of pesticides and fertilisers.
Many people donate money to those in need without feeling the need to shout it from the rooftops.

However, please take it as a compliment when I say that having read your posts, I feel as though we've met before.
I am neither a personal friend of Chris Evans or an important blogger, aspiration is a wonderful thing though and should either situation change, you'll be the first to know.
Your pedantry serves you well, and I stand corrected as I did not (as stated) ignore your vulgar comments. I addressed them directly in a frank and honest way.....imagine that?
What you said bothered me, so I addressed it. It's a good way of conducting business.
Saves accusations of bullying or trolling.
Personally, I do consider a motor car to be a work of art. In my opinion a car is more than
just a mode of transport. Please don't belittle my opinion and do take time to admire Leonardo Da Vinci's sketches of a helicopter, or a mode of transport if you like.
Not sure he'd have appreciated the possibilities of a lump of metal at that time.
As you've changed your mind on the benefits of planting trees, I'll leave that paragraph for someone wiser than me. Your standpoint of plant some trees, no don't plant some trees, is confusing.
On to the final sentence....
You are absolutely right!
Many people do donate money to those in need without feeling the need to shout it from he roof tops.
My Suspicion (and I know you won't like it) is that you are talking about the very same people who will jump in those works of art (indulge me) on Thursday.
So large are the sums of money that they have parted with, that I don't think we are talking about people who have scrimped and scraped to hit this target.
I suspect that the group of decent people jumping in those cars on Thursday are people who are wealthy enough to have been doing anything they wanted on Thursday.
The thing is.....no matter how wealthy they are, they couldn't have been doing this.
This is only possible because Chris and the people he has sold his *unique* works of art to, are willing to give them to charity.
This really is a one off!
I don't know if what I'm about to say is something I should or shouldn't say, but here goes....
A couple of years ago, I was lucky enough to meet Chris and spend a few moments chatting to him. After I'd told him how lucky he'd been in the wife stakes (he readily agreed), I asked him about a car he'd just bought.
Anyone who's read his recent books will know straight away, that I'm talking about his dream car, a car so rare that being able to bid on it is a priviledge. A car that he once turned down the chance to buy and somehow had been granted another bite of the cherry.
Anyway....
I asked him where it was? 'In Italy having a nuts and bolts rebuild' was the reply.
Blimey, I responded. When do you get it back? 'Next July' he said, 'then it goes back again'. Wow! I said, what's that for then, do you get to scrutinise the restoration?
He laughed and replied, 'No, it's being shipped back for the Magnificent Seven, then it goes straight back'.
So let's not pretend that those lucky, hard working bidders could do what they're doing on Thursday in private. They could not!
Right. Last orders at the hotel bar.....
Chrissie, thanks for your welcome, if that's what qualifies me as an "important blogger"!
I'll take it....
Apologies if I've bored, annoyed or upset anyone.

Hello to all on the night shift!
Last nights posts could be the start of some very philosophical discussions!
Why do people not all donate to good causes altruistically but often take something in return for their donation whether a bottle of slighty suspicious sherry from the church fete bottle tombola or a weekend of extravagent (but also donated) activities?

Is it right that some people can afford to donate such huge amounts to charity when there are others not knowing where there next meal is coming from?
Too big for me to answer but makes you think doesn't it?
I suppose that until we live in that perfect world, I, for one, am very pleased that there are people who are willing to donate so much of their time, money and property for a good cause!

I'm happy to report that after six months of being out of work, 'im indoors has at last been offered a job and will be back in the land of the employed from 9th July! Best of all, his new place of work is only a five minute walk from home, so his carbon footprint will improve no end!
Mum has now been in hospital for three months but at last she is being discharged tomorrow, although she will be going into a nursing home as she's just too poorly to come home yet, but we're hopeful that with care and some peace and quiet she'll respond well. One of the best things about where she's going to (if you can put it that way) is that her sister-in-law, who she's very close to, is in the same home so they'll be able to chat away together. It's a huge relief as the home is only 20 mins from dad and family and friends, rather than the two hour bus ride each way that dad's had to endure. He's been to see mum every other day for three months now and at 81 he's a bit pooped, to say the least. At least now mum will be able to see friends and family more often, and hopefully that will help with her recovery.

Re: the charity debate. As I have said before, it used to drive me absolutely crazy when Terry did the "things money can't buy" thingy. But, then, I realised that there will always be the haves and have nots in this world. 'Twas ever thus. If I had the money, I would have definitely bidded for the D&D - avoiding the cars side of it, if possible, but the rest of the festivites sound fantastic. I have no envy whatsoever for the wealthy people who are taking part - none of us knows their life story - just because they have money, doesn't mean their lives are better than anyone else's. Now you all know that I am a Christian and regular church goer, so this is what the Bible says about giving.....
“Be careful! When you do something good, don’t do it in front of others so that they will see you. If you do that, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
“When you give to those who are poor, don’t announce that you are giving. Don’t be like the hypocrites. When they are in the synagogues and on the streets, they blow trumpets before they give so that people will see them. They want everyone to praise them. The truth is, that’s all the reward they will get. So when you give to the poor, don’t let anyone know what you are doing. Your giving should be done in private. Your Father can see what is done in private, and he will reward you."

And it is quite right, we should not draw attention to ourselves when we are doing a good deed/giving alms. That's the theory. However, if we were to adhere to that, strictly, then not one of us would be able to say anything about the good things we do for people. It could be misconstrued that when we say we're helping a neighbour, or helping someone we know to be ill, or even just being good to our family - this could all sound like "boasting" in some way. Even when you say you are doing the Street Pastors, that could be misconstrued, and I know that you do this totally out of love and concern. Very difficult to discuss on the blog, but I am sure you know what I mean. This is purely a matter of faith, but I believe completely that God knows who is sincere and who is purely doing things for their own ends. It will all come out in the wash ... and I have a feeling I am going to get very wet!

Rips-An excellent post last night.
I never knew Chris was responsible for the upkeep of a forest around his abode. I love trees (despite the fact that some of neighbours disagree). Some of you may remember last year when I told how my neighbours illegaly chopped down my lovely fir tree which attracted wildlife including squirrels, a pair of doves, etc. Well I am pleased to say that all the rain we've been getting has caused a shoot which they couldn't reach to grow very fast. It's now about 10ft tall.
Re the charity topic. As I've mentioned before my regular charity was set up after I became ill as I wanted to give something back as I was so thankful for all the help I received. On the form it asked if I would like a signed photograph of Des O'Connor. As I thought it would be rude not I ticked the box. I now have a quite a big collection of signed photos of various celebrities. Also twice yearly come the draw tickets with the chance of winning a car. Although it makes me feel good to give it's also nice to receive something in return. I think we are all the same whether rich or poor.

There's other ways of giving to charity too, if you don't have petty cash hanging around the size of El Salvador's national debt: time! Let's not forget the work we and the Mayo blogchums have done for CiN. Also, in my business, I have taken on the social media accounts for a local charity totally free of charge - I can't afford to go to their Black Tie events or donate a regular monthly sum but I can give them my time, and for that, they are grateful.
Art is definitely in the eye of the beholder. On my first date with Nic I took him to one of my most favourite spaces in the whole wide world. I bigged it up en route, telling him how stunning it was, how sound reverberated, how light flooded in yet was shielded out, how there was safety as it was enclosed, yet space to feel freedom. I took him to the Turbine Hall at the Tate Modern. He thought I was (still am!) bonkers. But I love it there. Not necessarily the works on display but just the Turbine Hall, and all it has to offer.
If we all liked the same things, and agreed on everything, life would be oh so dull, wouldn't it?
I've been a bit below par this week, having inherited Nic's cold he brought back from French France last week. I woke up this morning without a voice which was a bit of a challenge as I've had two networking events this morning: yes, I was up and out and at my first one by 7am, then onto my monthly Business Ladies Brunch straight after. Home again now though, with a stack of follow-ups to do and the normal workload for my lovely clients.
Huggles to those who need them, and I have plenty of tissues here for the hayfever sufferers.

Sir, you are far too modest. You may not be a personal friend of Chris Evans, but judging by the reaction you have elicited from the LLOTB, I would say that you are a Very Important Blogger.
Art - I appreciate the beauty of good design and precision engineering and this applies to a Ferrari in spadefulls, but is it art?
A sublime goal, or try at rugby, a golf shot or a six in cricket is beautiful, but is it art?
This question has taxed many far better minds than mine so I guess we will never know the answer, if indeed there is one.
Charity - I'm sticking to my guns on this one. I'm not particularly religious but I think the bible has got it right on this one.
It would be interesting to know how many of the people taking part in this event would have done so even if Chris Evans was running it on a commercial basis and keeping the profits.

Anyway, I have been away for what seems like AGES (no excuses, no note from me mother, just - dunno really!!) but recently started lurking again - and ta da! here I am again! Hope everyone's been ok while I've been gone! I have enjoyed the posts above - lots of good chat and debate - quite like old times!
For the hay fever sufferers out there - I had to post - have you tried Luffa?? you get it from the health food shops (or online) and is either tablets or tincture - its herbal and it has done my daughter the power of good with her hayfever/rhinitis! If you g**gle it there are lots of articles etc about how it is effective for lots of people with allergies. I know these things can be very personal and what works for some people doesn't work for others, but it certainly worked for us!
Charity - it seems to me (talking just about the D&D here really) the people who put in those bids for the car/disco/weekend can obviously afford it. We have no idea if they support loads of other charities during the year. I wouldnt exactly say they get loads of publicity for it - their names don't remain in my mind forever! and its not uncommon to have a charity dinner for example, where you buy a ticket (or a table) for a meal/dance etc with all profits going to a charity - I've even organised one or two myself! So apart from the fact that there are several more zeros on the end of these donations/prices paid, it seems the same sort of thing to me.
And I think if a charity can benefit then why not?! Should the people who do the Everest or Peru treks for charities not do them because they get an amazing holiday out of it?!
ANYWAY - I didn't mean to come back and start being controversial on my first day and I may not have expressed myself all that clearly, but its nice to see everyone again!!
Just watching the end of the tennis - why DO those women have to shriek like that?!
lots of love

Hi Rambling Cornish-it's great to read everyone's point of view. Re my regular charity (which I think I'm beginning to talk about too much so may I be forgiven) The signed photos are for a minimum amount, then comes the photo plus a bag, (not boasting but I have two) and for a much larger amount (talking thousands) one can mingle at a celebrity event all proceeds to the charity of course. I don't see anything wrong with this as it's all for a very worth cause indeed.
I think that art, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder, nothing more or less.

I saw this pics on t'other side too Bids. I have to say, I agree with AliB and find the whole car thing a bit of a bore. Personally, I couldn't drive something that costs more than the average house, I'd just be too nervous of anything bad happening -whether it be down to my driving or some other road numpty. I'm not one of life's natural petrol heads - the best bits of Top Gear are the budget car challenges: I tend to switch off when they review the super-sleek sports cars and high performance things. Dull.

I just loved what I heard of Chris this morning - he really was like a wee boy in a sweetie shop - so excited! And, how gorgeous was Noah this morning? He's a wee smasher!
RC: nice to see you here - please come back soon!
Dozer: hope you and D have a wonderful few days. Scone is just so beautiful, yes, even the wet weather won't hamper your enjoyment, I'm sure. xx
PJ: enjoy your weekend - hope Mr PJ landed a big one! (fish, of course!)
Happy Thursday!

If I won the lottery I would do the drive and dine, to drive those amazing cars would be amazing and no other oppotunity to have a go - the sheer sound of them this morning on the radio made me smile.
I know the passage in the bible of which Ali speaks and it troubles me too - thats why most of my giving is under the rader (but modern technology is making this harder) and I'm going to have to give up my charity work due to lack of time which worries me greatly.
I saw some amazing bikes at a meet on Monday, absolutely pieces of ARt, worth having one and keeping it on display in your living room if you ahd the space and money. Art is in the eye of the beholder and that whats makes it so interesting.

It's so muggy today that I've got a headache which just won't go away, darn it. I wish we could have a storm and be done with it.
Art - one man's art is another man's something or other so each to their own I guess - it's just as well we're not all the same! I'm only a few mins' walk from the Turner Contemporary here in Kent but I've not actually been there yet. Hazel Love and I tried to get there last time she was down but it was a Monday which happened to be the only day they're shut but I want to go soon - Rodin's 'The Kiss' is there and I'm intrigued to see it up close.
Right - must get on and finish my minutes .... why are they called that anyway? They always, always take flippin' hours to finish!
Deevs - well done you x
Have a good day everyone.

Missed the last hour of the show! Usually I can cary on listening when I get to work but today is coffee morning so we have had Follow the Van and My Old Man's a Dustman!
I was enjoying the show too. Not so much the cars but the excitment in everyone's voices - even those who were just there to fix things! Even got a bonus Noah moment!
What amazes me is that most of those cars were lent by other people for complete strangers to drive!!!
JG, Don't know but you're right. Flippin Hours would be a better name!
Baggy, Interesting about the tax. Nice to see you (x)
PJ, hope the sun shines on you
Deevs, So good to hear all your hard work is paying off. Well done
Berni and Dozer and Bids and Chrissie and CSN and MBD and Maddy - hello!

Jilly: now, I may have missed this, or forgotten about you saying where you live - you are in my favourite place in the world, bar none! We were there last year - spent hours and hours and then some more hours sitting round at the Harbour just looking at the Clock Tower and the rest of the town. We did plan to come back this year, but due to MrS hurting his foot and not being able to work for three months, we had to shelve those plans. But, we'll be there next year, for sure ... a wee mini-meet, do you think?!
Cheryl: I did mean to say to you earlier - way to go, girl! (you have to say that with an American accent, or it just doesn't work!).

A don't wanter come in and rock the blogging boat as for one a can't swim... BUT..... A notice the discussion in particular between Rips & MagicBusBriver...... A for one ave ter agree with Rips that at times a car is art.... A once 'ad a beautiful car..... That noot only was a car of beauty but it was also painted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's a long story but basically a split up with a VERY angry girlfriend (because she was angry)(she was an art teacher and the students were amking 'er VERy angry... Sadly a was on the back end of the situation!!!!!!).... My car ended up being painted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Could this be a work of art as it was a beautiful car that 'ad been painted by an artist using VERY 'igh quality oil paints!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok a can't write 'ere what it said.... But like MBD writes....
It was 'challenging, provocative or even downright ugly!!!!!!'
And noot neccessarily beautiful as she was angry at the time of painting, 'ence 'er lines were not as neat as in 'er art classessess!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
17% TRUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
'ope this 'elps!!!!!!!!!!!
