9 Times popstars got frank about sex

Sex can be a tricky topic to talk about, it doesn't matter whether you're famous or not.

This week, Gemma Cairney and Dr Radha Modgil will be tackling the subject of contraception on Radio 1's The Surgery and speaking openly about its importance in sexual health.

It's not easy for everyone to bring up, but here's 9 stars who have no problem speaking about about sex and talk about the topic in positive and responsible ways.

Matty Healy

For Matty of The 1975, sex and music are much of a muchness, and he describes making music as satisfying his desires in the same way as sex.

“I love making music like I love having sex, I put it in the same category," he told website When The Gramophone Rings in early 2016.

"I always say that when I get an idea and I feel it coming into fruition, that’s it for me, I put that alongside any other carnal feelings that you’d get from sexual urges, so when I made this record that’s what I was in pursuit of."

We'll never listen to a 1975 record in the same way again.

Little Mix

Little Mix raised eyebrows with their 2016 No.1 single Shout Out To My Ex, which had some rather risky song lyrics about sex with ex-boyfriends.

'I hope she gettin’ better sex / Hope she ain't fakin’ it like I did,' Little Mix sing on the track, and the girls told The Sun newspaper that it was written about their own personal experiences.

When it comes to faking an orgasm, Leigh-Anne said "Sometimes you feel bad and don’t want them to feel awkward, so you just do it," earlier this year.

Olly Alexander

Olly from Years & Years is one of the UK's most outspoken young stars and a powerful voice for LGBTQ+ youth in the UK. He sings about love and sex in his music, and hopes his music can encourage other young, gay stars speak about sex in an open way.

"I'd like to hear a gay artist express their sexuality in a really open way," he told Digital Spy in 2015.

"That's something I've sort of tried to do a little bit on this album, but to be able to talk about sex is possibly new for gay artists, so I'd like to see that in the mainstream."

Shawn Mendes

Shawn Mendes has fast become one of the hottest pop boys on the planet, but his success has cost him when it comes to his private life.

He tells Billboard magazine he finds sex "impossible" since he became famous and that the only attention he needs would be from a girlfriend (which he currently doesn't have).

"Being a sex symbol isn't cool unless you're in love with a girl and she calls you a sex symbol," he said earlier this year.

His song Patience is about how he had sex with someone, but who then worried because he is only 18 years old.

"[It's] about a girl older than me who I hooked up with, but the next day was so scared because of how young I was"

Rihanna

Rihanna one of pop's most powerful females and she owns her sexuality on stage and in her music. But when it comes to her private life, she's cautious about acting on her sexual urges.

"I don't want to wake up the next day feeling guilty. I mean I get horny − I'm human, I'm a woman, I want to have sex," she told Vanity Fair in 2015.

"But what am I going to do − just find the first random cute dude that I think is going to be great for the night and then tomorrow I wake up feeling empty and hollow?"

Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber has been linked with a string of females during his career, most notably Selena Gomez, and in the past year alone has been snapped naked with two different women.

A few short years ago he told Rolling Stone magazine that he believed you should only have sex with someone you're in love with.

"I don't think you should have sex with anyone unless you love them," he said in 2011.

"I think you should just wait for the person you're...in love with."

Ariana Grande

With songs like Side By Side, Ariana Grande shows how confident she is playing with sexually explicit lyrics now, in her mid-twenties.

But she told Marie Claire magazine that she was writing songs when she was 14 years old that surprised her mum with their adult lyrics.

"I wrote this song called 'Higher,' and the lyrics were too sexual, too mature," she said in 2015.

"My mom was like, 'This is a great song, but damn, you're too young for this.'"

Drake

Drake is the world's favourite sensitive star and he has found his fame with his super honest lyrics. He sings about sex, but while he's revealed he has an active private life, it’s not always a positive thing.

"I recognise all my issues," he told NME.

"When I say “I’ve had sex four times this week, I’ll explain” (on ‘Marvin’s Room’), I recognise that my life was going a little too fast at that point."

Never change, Aubrey.

Fifth Harmony

The Fifth Harmony girls haven't gone quite as far as Little Mix with their lyrics, but they admit that the songs on their second album, 24/7, are way more sexual than fans heard on their debut.

They say this is because they feel more confident talking about sex among their age group.

"A lot of people are really exploring their sexuality," Lauren Jauregi told Billboard magazine in 2015.

"And, honestly, we’re 17 to 21 – so that’s a realistic topic for us."
