8 stars who have a tricky relationship with their parents

Radio 1's Popstar Parents Evening is a celebration of stars that have a great relationship with their families, not to mention a good chance to get some seriously funny goss on some of our favourite celebs.

But there are many people in the public eye who have troubled relationships with their parents.

These are their stories.

Ariana Grande

Ariana fell out with her father Edward Butera in 2014, but has never revealed the real reason behind the breakdown in their relationship.

"It’s private, but it happened last year. It took me so long to be okay with it," she told Seventeen magazine.

She also revealed she struggled to accept the similarities she saw in herself and her dad.

The thing that got me there was embracing the fact that that I am made up of half my dad and a lot of my traits come from him."

"So much of me comes from my father, and for so long, I didn’t like that about myself. I had to accept that it’s okay not to get along with somebody and still love them."

Adele

Adele's dad Marc Evans left her and mum Penny when she was two years old and had little to do with the superstar as she grew up.

In 2011, he sold his story to a tabloid, which angered Adele and seemingly destroyed any chance of reconciliation between the two.

"I was actually ready to start trying to have a relationship with him," she told Vogue magazine in 2012.

"He will never hear from me again."

In 2015 he told The Sun on Sunday that their falling out was a "misunderstanding" but Adele has remained typically tight-lipped on the subject since.

Kelly Clarkson

In February 2016, a video of a heavily pregnant Kelly Clarkson performing her song Piece By Piece on the final season of American Idol went viral.

The song was written about her dad, Stephen Clarkson, who separated from her mum when she was six years old and with whom she has very little contact.

Kelly struggled to finish the performance as she choked back tears.

Explaining the song to Glamour magazine in 2015, she said Piece By Piece was written after she became a mother and struggled to understand why her father had left.

“It’s a positive song, even though I know it sounds sad," she said.

"I don’t know what my father went through as a child, and I don’t know why he left and made the decisions he made, but everyone’s human."

Beyoncé

Beyoncé’s dad, Matthew Knowles, managed Beyoncé since she was a child performer, but was fired by Bey in 2011. Which is awkward to say the least.

Legal documents in 2011 suggested Matthew had stolen from the star, an accusation he strongly denied.

When Beyoncé announced the professional split from her father she said she loved him "dearly" and was "grateful for everything" he taught her.

Later the same year, Beyoncé’s mum Tina finalised divorce proceedings from Matthew, after discovering he had fathered a child with another woman in 2009.

Her 2014 track Ring Off was written about Beyoncé’s pride in her mum, with lyrics relating to her parents separation.

"You live and learn, that's just the way life goes / Always know that you've got a daughter / That's so, so proud you took the high road," she sang.

Katy Perry

Katy Perry gets on well with her parents despite deep divisions in their political and social beliefs.

Katy campaigned for Hillary Clinton during the 2016 US election, but her mum and dad voted for Donald Trump.

Also, in 2013, according to The Sun newspaper, Katy's dad reportedly criticised fans for worshipping Katy instead of God.

However, in the same speech she revealed her parents voting choices, she also stated it would not divide the family and that they would still be sat around the same Thanksgiving table this year.

Demi Lovato

Demi's dad Patrick Lovato died of cancer in 2013, after a difficult relationship between the pair.

She spoke of her difficult decision to "cut out" her dad from her life in 2011 and later how she struggled to process her feeling after he died.

"I was very conflicted when he passed, because he was abusive," Demi said in a YouTube video.

"He was mean, but he wanted to be a good person. And he wanted to have his family, and when my mom married my stepdad, he still had this huge heart where he said, ‘I’m so glad that [he's] taking care of you and doing the job that I wish I could do.'"

On her most recent album, 2015, she shared her feelings in her song, Father.

Daisy Lowe

The model and Strictly Come Dancing star discovered in 2004 that the man she believed was her biological father was not, in fact, her dad.

A paternity test confirmed that her father was Gwen Stefani's former husband, Gavin Rossdale.

But the revelation did not result in a happy reunion; it caused divisions between Gavin, Daisy and her mum, Pearl Lowe.

"While Daisy and I are close, things haven’t always been easy," Pearl told Easy Living in 2013.

"It was a bit hairy for six months when I told her I suspected her father was the musician Gavin Rossdale."

"I lost him as a friend, but Daisy has a relationship with him, which is great."

Ariel Winter

Modern Family actress Ariel left her mum's care in 2012 when she was just 14, after allegations of abuse were made against mum Chrystal Workman.

She became emancipated in 2015 when she was 17, after her sister Shanelle became her permanent guardian in 2014.

"I'm really lucky I have an amazing support system and lovely people in my life who have given me the support and guidance to have been given this wonderful opportunity," she wrote on social media after she officially separated from her mother.

Speaking about her relationship with her sister, Ariel says: "I love you more than words can even describe and I'm so lucky to have you as my sister. You're an amazing mother, an amazing sister, and an amazing wife, among many other things."
