Olly Murs: 'I wish I'd trusted my own decisions, not my mates, when I was growing up'

Olly Murs new single, Grow Up, is about a tricky break-up, but its video stars a team of troublesome children as Olly's film crew shooting the clip.
When he visited Radio 1 to chat to Nick Grimshaw about his new album and answer questions from fans, we chose not to probe him about his ex (because, rude) and instead quizzed Olly about what he was like as a child - or before he 'grew up'.
Here's what he told us about Little Olly.
What was the most annoying thing about being a child that made you want to grow up?
Having no money. I'd always have to work to get a little bit of money. My mum and dad didn't give me money to buy anything when I went to school and I always had a packed lunch.

You'd go past the canteen and they'd have chocolate doughnuts or you could buy an amazing lunches, the food looked amazing and it smelt great. I just had a corned beef sandwich and a pack of cheesy puffs.
I used to scrounge at school, i'd ask people if they had any spare change.
When you were a child, what was the most exciting thing about being a grown up?
I think it was having your own house and car. A car was probably the most exciting for me. You know you've become an adult when you've got your own car, your own wheels, driving around going wherever you want to go. The world's your oyster.

What food did you hate the most when you were a child?
I hated peas and brussels sprouts. I remember my dad giving me a plate of peas one day and saying "you have to eat these peas" because I was being such a baby about veg and it's really important for children to eat vegetables. I wouldn't eat them so I covered them in tomato ketchup. I was being sick while I ate the peas. It was really bad.
Brussels Sprouts I really hated but apparently they are a really good food source, like turkey, that we should eat more often but we don't, we only eat them once a year. They're really really good for you.
When you were a child, what did you do that annoyed your parents the most?
I can blow bubbles from my mouth and my mum used to get really annoyed about it. It's basically me spitting. Obviously it wasn't cool but it's something I could do with my tongue and blow these actually quite big bubbles. It was just a stupid thing I did as a kid and I got into the habit of doing it all the time.

What was the naughtiest thing you can remember doing as a child?
I was always breaking ornaments in the lounge. My and my brother used to play football indoors all the time. I'd smash the ball and it would break an ornament. One year, I smashed this small ornament of a little man. We hit the head and we broke the head off, but it was such a clean cut that managed to put it back on and we just left it there.
My mum claims she's a bit of a clean freak but four years later, we go to move the house and my mum picks up the ornament - which apparently she cleaned for four years but obviously didn't - and realised the head was broken. She thought it had broken because it was so old. It was only when I told her that she realised.
What gave you nightmares when you were a child?
Clowns. I watched a film called It and it was really scary, my mum and dad had the video on VCR.
The thing is with It, the end of the film really ruins it for me because he turns into a massive spider and i'm just like "really?" It was so good up to that point.
If someone wants to dress as a clown and come and scare me, they'll get a slap. As long as it's all in fun and in jest it's fine but obviously when it comes to a point where people are hurting others for fun, that's not cool. If it's just a bit of fun and a joke then it's ok.

What advice would you give to little Olly Murs?
I'd like to have trusted my own decisions more and not listened to other people. When I grew up, in college and high school I think I listened to my mates more than think about what I wanted to do. For example, I really wanted to be a hairdresser at one point but my friends said "you can't go into hairdressing, because it's not cool for guys to do that. It's what girls do." There was singing, music and acting - it just wasn't a cool thing to do with the lads. They said you've got to be a lad, you've got to play sports, you have to play football.
I'm quite a creative person and obviously i've made the right decisions otherwise I wouldn't be where I am now, but if I go back I would have made my own decisions instead of asking other people.
