Jonny Remember Me/Us

Chris Evans | 18:19 UK time, Friday, 8 July 2011

So how was it for you ? Jonny's Last Stand took place this morning and what an heroic performance the kid put in. I was a blubbing mess from start to finish, I hate goodbyes - a strong statement but it's entirely true. Especially when that goodbye means I will no longer be working with one of the most decent blokes I have ever met. Everything you probably imagine about Master Saunders is true, he is simply an all round mensh.

Five or is it six years we've been hanging out on the radio together and yet this morning it was literally like it was still our first week. It's always felt this way.. Lucky ? You betcha. And now that luck passes into the teaching profession. Jonny will make a fantastic teacher. An extraordinary decision by an extraordinary man.

It was a pleasure working with you JS, the best of the best, top of the shop, the cream of the crop.

You will be hugely missed but we admire and applaud your compunction to follow your heart.

CE.

Aw Chris, bless you. What a send off for Jonny - I was really impressed by the thought and effort you put in to saying goodbye to him.

Hopefully you'll keep in touch with him - good friends should be nurtured.

And he called you a generous person and a gentleman - how nice is that?

Have just listened again (having caught only my usual 10mins including the candyman - wise choice Johnny, we needed confirmation it was Friday), and was thinking how well you'd all held it together (although I did note the more music than usual policy), til the end :) I'm just preparing to watch Johnny's video now... Wish me luck I'm going in..

Hugs to anyone needing one (and a good wodge of tissues too)

Aw Chris how wonderful to have a blog from you tonight. I know how much we will all miss Jonny but that just isn't the same as what you are going through. You need the holiday to come back all new and refreshed to a different sort of team dynamics and you will coz that's the pro and gentleman you are. You proved that again today by knowing exactly what JS appreciated to make his last day even more special.

We will miss you terribly but at least it is only for two weeks. Enjoy!!

    Love
    Susan xx

I have to say Annie, the music choices were fab today, while listening (is again the right word when I only caught 10mins the first time round?) I had the urge to dance (not sure my moves from old l,b&t classes count as dancing) round my living room a bit. Hope the neighbours didn't think I'd gone doo-laly... Still, hopefully it kept them entertained ;)

The below link a urge all ter watch... Ter take in the main question that is asked in the song..... In the form a REPEATED three letter word sung throughout the song that the singer singing the song in question sings asking the 3 lettered word question..... And a will be back soon with two questions about some of the mysteries of life VERY much on the same line of the part of the line in the song... Of the REPEATED three letter word.....

    Back again.....

    WHY!!!!!!!!!

Me first 'WHY' is a don't understand 'WHY' Jono S 'as left!!!!!!!

A man who 'as reached the peaks... the 'eights of broadcasting showbizz by just simply being allowed ter sit... let alone ter broadcast... alongside The C. Evans whilst live on the air!!!!!!!
A man who in 'imself could easily 'ave taken the 'otseat 'imself when CLP goes on 'is 'olidays!!!!!
A man who INDEED did take the 'otseat on many occasions on FiveAlive... As a top flight sports commontator!!!!!!!
A man who got to do some of the most interesting sports challenges with CLP... Ter take part in the Drivetime disco.... Even ter rub shoulders not only with the rich & famous but probably actually ter rub shoulders with Sally Boazman on the dancefloor at the R2 Crimbo Party gig!!!!!!
A man who worked in the same building as Steve Wright!!!!!!!!!!

Just these few examples of the qualities of Jono S.... And the experiences that 'e experienced as an experienced broadcaster.... Make me ask why would 'e wanter leave ter go & teach....... CHILDREN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!????????

INDEED a remember meeting Jono S for the first time & a can 100% say 'e was the most genuinely nice & pleasant person ave ever met from the world of showbizz..... Which maybe in a strange way answers me question of WHY 'e wants to go inter teaching CHILDREN!!!!
'e will make a VERY good teacher!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Am sure it won't be long before 'e reaches the 'eights of 'eadmaster!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Me second 'WHY' ter follow soon..........

The-MEGA-New-Bingo-Star:: Having several teachers and a headmaster in my family, I can fully understand why the immensely likeable Jonny wants to fulfil a long-time ambition of his, which is to become a teacher! Having spent several years at Uni as well as three years of OU studying, he sounds fully prepared for his new career of teaching English to senior pupils!

As Jonny said in his video, his dad is a teacher, so he clearly knows a lot about the profession already... and he said that when he left Uni, he wanted to be a teacher as well as go into broadcasting and his dad suggested the broadcasting first and I think his success in the world of media has, in many ways, prepared him very well for teaching.

Personally I think Jonny has many fine attributes that will make him a very good teacher and I'm sure the kids and their parents will absolutely love him!

Best of luck Jonny, you'll be missed by a lot of people, but Radio 2's loss will be your school's gain!

Me second 'WHY' is 'WHY' is the world gone mad!!!!!!??????

Don't let any 'ear this at R2... But often when ave got commercial radio on in me truck... A keep 'earing... commercials REAPEATED by a well known water company ter phone their VERY nice 'Spot A Water Leak & 'elp Save The World 'elpline!!!!!!' if yer spot a leak!!!!!!

Guess what all.... Right outside me new very old 'ouse a water sprung up from under the road... The result... A stream running 100 yards dwon the road ter the next gutter!!!!!!

So a rang the above mentioned 'otline 7 weeks ago!!!!!!!!

After a lot of trouble simply trying ter give the person on the end of the line me address... Eventually the water dudes agreed ter send an engineer out ter assess the problem!!!!!!

The dude arrived later that day.... Only ter tell me that the leak is not a leak.... even though there was a stream running down the street!!!!!!
A was told that the water coming up from under the road (even though it was substantial & coming up in 3 places) was from the gutter & 'NOWT' ter do with the water dudes but the council!!!!!!
A thought is this bloke trying ter take the 'a need ter go to the toilet' out of me!!!!???
After 30 minutes of arguing... A agreed ter phone the council & report the problem!!!!!

    More in a bit.....

  • Comment number 16.

A rang the council only ter be greeted on the phone by a very patronising woman telling me, in the most patronising voice, that if there is water coming up out if the road then it's 'NOWT' ter do with the council.... What aneed ter do is ring a company called the local water authority!!!!!
Of which a explained when she would allow me ter speak... That already 'ad done so!!!!!!!
After a lot of rudeness from 'er... She eventually agreed ter take me address (of which a 'ad ter give 'er about 5 times as she was so rude & stupid she couldn't even right an address down first time) & send out an inspector ter inspect the problem!!!!!

After putting the phone down a was in a state of bewilderment as ter what is going wrong with this increasing insane country we are living in!!!!!!

First the OTT ads ter save the world!!!!!!
Then the multi-billion pound companies who try not ter do what they are mean't ter do by passing the buck....
Then the rude council who seem ter forget they are our 'civil' 'servants'!!!!!!!

Amazingly a week later.... A noticed the council 'ad been out & banged a new gutter grid cover.... But no suprise.... the water leak was still as bad as ever... In fact getting worse!!!!!!

So what a waste of time fitting a new gutter grid cover that didn't need fitting!!!!!!!!

    More again in a bit......

  • Comment number 17.

So for seven weeks now.... Even when we 'ear of a 'osepipe ban... Day & night the stream of wasted water 'as been running down me street!!!!!!!!!!

Until this morning..... When the water authority actually arrived.... ter do what a asked them ter do 7 weeks ago.... FIX THE LEAK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And guess what all..... they've dug a 'ole outside me 'ouse.... And fixed the leak!!!!!!!!

Only problem now..... 'ow many weeks will it take them ter fill in the 'ole!!!!!!!!!

Which takes me back ter 'WHY'..... 'WHY' does a simple water leak in 2011.... become anything but simple!!!!!!!!!!

    There's no more thankfully!!!!!!

I have really enjoyed listening to him & CLP bantering on the radio over the years and am only sorry that b-m will not remember him as I will.

    Evening all

Got the Carpenters - Top of the World going round my head so am having to listen again about 18mins in to hum along to the cheery little ditty since I haven't found it amongst my music collection (something to be corrected at some point me thinks).

Not much to report here other than I appear to have two of those blooming thunder/corn flies wandering round inside my monitor. How do they get in there (and various picture frames)? One appears to be on this side of the screen and the other under it (and worryingly it hasn't moved in a while so I guess that blob on the screen is going to be there permanently now), you'd think after 10 years or so in this flat land that grows corn I'd be used to them, but they never fail to amaze me at how they get inside units I would have thought were well sealed (including various of my framed sewing efforts).

    Hugs to all

Baggy, well done on your run! An hour and a hlaf? I'd still be running! (or staggering!)

Oz, I had one of those the other day but it#s vanished now! Not sure if that's a good thing or not!

Hope you've all had a jolly good weekend

We had a lovely time in London although I did have to buy 2 new pairs of sandels - one falling to bits is annoying, the new pair bought as a replacement was just a pain!

Best bit of the weekend was our Jame Bond moment, whooshing up past the O2 arena on the Thames in a speed boat

    Evening everyone!

Hope no-one's Monday was TOO traumatic! Congratulations on your run Baggy - that's a brilliant time. I won't tell you how long it took Jasper and I to stagger round when we did it. It was more than 1½ hours though, hehehe...!!

Jasper barks that I'm not allowed to listen to RM in the mornings now. He was grossly offended after Madeupley read out the birthday wishes for two dogs and then went on about "what a waste of time that was". Grrrr...

Keep smiling (except Jasper - he's still cross)

    Roo xxx

  • Comment number 46.

    Hooray!!

I am not alone although it sounds like a certain stand-in breakfast show host may be feeling more lonely soon!

Personally, I just tend to let him burble in the background but that's mostly due to my own laziness!

Deevs, hope you're feeling less mardy now you're home and working on your own terms. If not, do you want a hug (((x))) or a boot up the bum? Feel free to take either or both

Gail, how's your new doggy settling and are the old "family" making him welcome?

Mary, I'm fine thanks, how are you?

Roo, You and jasper would still have beaten me! Have just read young Jasper's blog!!!! What a thing!!! Hope he's doing fine and you're ok too

    Sezza xxx

  • Comment number 47.

    Evening all

I was going to come in to clear the tumbleweed but Roo and Sezza beat me to it.

I'm like you Sezza, I don't like RM but cba to change the channel for 2 weeks (especially in the car as I must listen to SM on the way home).

Mind you, I was in said car this morning when RM was burbling about the dogs and I felt Jasper's justified indignation. Dogs are family and deserve to celebrate birthdays and be included in dedications etc...

I'll add my congratulations for Baggy's acheivement and for Deevs who is now half qualified (or should that be semi qualified?).

As it's Monday, it must be quiz night - we're not doing too well this Summer - we've only won 1 league game out of 4 (mind you me and the OH weren't here for the first 2 games), we are still in the cup having won our first round but the next round is against the team who always win everything (but we have beaten them twice in the last 3 seasons)

    Anyhoo dinner to cook.

Mtd, I found out a new fact at the weekend. We went on a speed boat on the Thames and as part of her blurb, the lady told us where the word "wharf" comes from

It is WareHouse Against River Front!!

    I never knew that!

    Good luck

    Sezza xxx

  • Comment number 49.

Hi Sezza - thank you for checking out Jasper's blog. Happy to report that he's still feeling chipper after delivering his "alien baby"! The 'wharf' thing is REALLY interesting - I never knew that! I love quirky little facts like that.

Top kudos to Deevs for the exam result, that's pretty impressively fine...

Mtd - greetings! Ah, that explains the tumbleweed in my hair... :-) Dear, oh dear - how are we going to cope for TWO weeks?! I'm sure RM is a lovely person (overlooking for now this morning's "dog" comments; Jasper's asleep) - but it does grate on my nerves when he's interviewing a famous person and he breaks off to relate some anecdote about himself - aaarrrgh!

I quite often have R2 on overnight as I don't sleep too well. Alex Lester and Richard Allinson are great - can't we have either of them? I bet THEY wouldn't be rude to canine listeners...

    Roo xxx

  • Comment number 50.

Thanks Sezza - I'll try to remember that one, I'm sure it will come up one day.
I haven't heard much Alex Lester but what I hear of him he may be a worthy replacement (maybe a bit too laid back for breakfast?) but I wholeheartedly support the Richard Allinson campaign, it was great when he stood in a couple of weeks ago for one day. Unfortunately, I think we are stuck with maders because he is Chris's mate (as said earlier - show in a field etc....)

Concerned, you could be right but from what I understand it's a well-used backronym used by the Thames boat guides. She had probably been told it herself

Right, I'm going to tunr the lights off and put the door on the latch.

    Good morning

Thank you for all the comments about my run, you people are far too kind! The important thing is I raied £110 for cancer research which I hope you all agree is a charity worth supporting, While we were waiting they had a doctor speaking who said with the money they had got from CR, they had found something about some cells that could help them fight resilient forms of cancer. Thats worth money IMHO.

I have some good news, the promise of a permanent job somewhere I want to work - I dont want to say too much until I see the contract but its looking like I might have finally found my ideal post after the demise of the large telecommunications firm I worked for - thats taken nearly 3 years of looking but if I get it, it will be well worth it.

Rather then moaning about RM why dont we say what songs we want to hear and make up a vertiual ipod list (other MP3's may well still be available).

I will start with bad manners - special brew as I'm in that kind of mood.

Baggy - Well done on the run. 20 minutes on a treadmill is about all I can manage. The job sounds promising too.
My suggestion for the virtual ipod would be Angels...sorry, Baggy, couldn't resist that one ;-)

    Good afternoon blogettes

Tumbleweed time on the blog. Hope all are well. On the RM front - yes he is annoying but at least it means we miss CLP all the more. Wouldn't be a good thing if we didn't miss him.

Deevs any more info on blog meet. My son assures me that there are two possible meeting places where you have suggested ................ you know I'd chose the wrong one and sit there like 'billy no mates'.

    Evening all

Not much to report here either other than the urge to listen again ;) Have ordered the Carpenters (after the need to repeat them the other night) and they're apparently being shipped, so hopefully they'll fit in my letterbox in the next day or two ;)

Have just spotted the thunderfly (I'm assuming it's the same one) wandering on this side of my screen but in the monitor. How long can they live in a contained environment? Hurry up and find the way out Mr fly.

    Hugs to all

    Hello all,

I'm in agreement with Nic - have had enough of RM now. The "Ha-ha-ha-I think you mean 'tweets' darling" jibe at a listener did it for me. I'm digging out my old tapes for the car tomorrow! Having said that, I DID like the new group (the builders) and their first single - lovely clear voices and a catchy tune.

    Keep smiling!

IMHO - You can't beat Scotland if you get the weather, and that's a very big IF!!, my problem is I don't like flying and I'm not too great on boats either, I would enjoy a tour round Europe in a luxury winebago (sp), that way we could go via the Chunnel.

I was thinking about you the other day, my Nanna was talking about scooters and how she doesnt want one, and I was thinking about the amount of freedom it gives you and how it would help her, she can't walk far anymore. Can you help with reasons I can pursade her to get one?

    Thanks

  • Comment number 86.

Surely reason #1 is that nana and Maddy can have "Go Faster" Scooter races! Bit like MotoGP but with more va va voom!

... and if CLP got Minnie a scooter too ... WOWSER!!!

    x

  • Comment number 88.

    Baggy.

You must tell Nanna to get a scooter. I love mine.

There are many reasons for one, i.e. complete independance (not having to rely on others), saving taxi fares, parking outside the door of the supermarket and watching all the frustrated drivers looking for somewhere to park. Even going round the supermarket if neccessary.

You can choose between 4mph or 8mph, (8mph have to be registered but no tax required) and can be used on either the pavement or road.

Afull battery recharge will do 20 miles.

Nanna must get one, they are GREAT!

    PS Deevs.

I did read somewhere that CLP said Minnie does have a scooter (must have been his column)

    Afternoon All,

Having a bit of a mad time, but wanted to pop in and say.....

Well done Baggy on the new job xx

Deev, Well done on passing assignment 8 (I think) and your job will come, don't worry, be patient :) xx

I wanted to add to the scooter chat, my Nan had a motorised wheelchair, which Baggy, your Nanna might find better. She was strapped in and controlled it with a lever on the arm of the chair, I used to have to run to keep up with her. With a wheelchair you can defo take them into shops etc. She loved it and decided to get one when she hit 90, it gave her so much independence, she went out on it every day, weather permitting. If she was still alive today, I'd sign her up for the race...lol.

My boiler was condemned yesterday, so no hot water and fortunately at this time of year I don't need heating. But it is a nightmare trying to sort out quotes for a new boiler. I got one today which was 5k!!! Where am I supposed to find that money..oh well never mind. I'll survive with cold showers for a while until I can get it all sorted.

    Hope everyone is tickerty boo.

    Hi all

Going backwards - Ali, poor you. When our's packed in a few years ago, a friendly plumber gave us a good deal on a reconditioned one which has lasted ever since.

Haven't got any experience regarding the scooter debate, but am definitely liking the idea of the scooter GP...

    On to the list

Tune - Child in time - Deep Purple (closely followed by Leyla and that Elbow one that I can't remember the title of but is the most famous Elbow one....)
Food - Singaporean (especially chicken satay with lots of peanut dip)
Animal - Koala (nothing too energetic)
Holiday - this is the most difficult one, I love the Caribbean and the Pacific coast of Mexico but New Zealand South Island is a lovely place as well and of course there are all the places I haven't been to but are on the 'list' so to speak. like the Islands in the South Pacific, the Seychelles, the Maldives (there is a theme here, they are all islands) the Galapagos and many more......

    Evening each

Home from Arran, where the sun shines and midgies bite. Am burnt and peeling, bitten and scratching but I wouldn't have missed it for the world. The sun shone from morning till night, the tall ships sailed past, the wine flowed, the craic was great and the bin was set on fire by best friend's son. Last year it was the police and the coastguard telling us off for sending up chinese lanterns (even though they actually rolled about the beach setting fire to the machair), this year it was the bottom burnt out of the bin.

We shopped in Arran aromatics and Arran cheese shop, lay about in the garden and put the world to rights. I left on the ferry this afternoon watching my mad friends doing the mexican wave from the pier.

Right, off to catch up - hope everyone has had lovely weather.

Still haven't caught up - been answering the phone. Stepson had a great time at T in the Park but had had enough of 'mingin girls' by Sunday morning (his words). He really enjoyed Tom Jones, Beyonce and Plan B. Now, I've heard of the first two but will have to have a look at Plan B.

Kks - my very best song is Trust Yourself by Bob Dylan (I think - this might change when I've had time to think about it). And my favourite holiday destination is Loch an Eilian.
