The Day After 2Day

Chris Evans | 10:17 UK time, Thursday, 23 June 2011

The day after today is always tomorrow of course, but the day after 2Day is today.

I think the boss did it to make us all realise how much we love our own slots, along with showcasing what else we have to offer as a far reaching, enthusiastic network.

I've never been happier to see Ken at quarter past nine than I was today.

Here's to today and 2Day - and tomorrow - whilst we're at it. Have a great one y'all.

    Morning,

I certainly enjoyed 2Day yesterday and it was nice to hear people in different slots and to appreciate just how cool and diverse Radio 2 is. Will this be a once a year feature? - If so fab.

    Rock on.

    Good morning,

I too hope it will be a once a year feature, but as Deev previously said, on a weekend or bank holiday please.

    Have a good day everyone.

I seem to be being moderated to within an inch of my life over on the other blog, which is stange considering I posted to CSN that if you ever get the chance do go and see Jools and his band live.

I went over a year ago and saw them in Stoke, nice little gig venue, the whole evening was exceptional he played with his band for 2.5 hours non-stop and Ruby Turner was exceptional.

The night finished with a foot stomping, chest thumping rendition of Enjoy Yourself, which he finished on last night, which meant you just had to sing at the top of your lungs and dance like 2 year old chasing the lights at wedding disco........

There is nothing better than a small gig, which leaves your chest thumping your feet stomping and a smile that returns everytime you hear a certain song or think about it. I am sure that Deevs will agree with that one.

So do put it on your must do list I am sure you will not be disappointed, even if you dont think it is your type of music, you will by the end of it.

Hi CLP - I too was very glad to get back in "the routine" of things show wise today - GD even turned over from MTV when I said "its popmaster time"!

Cockneybird - I too never thought Jools was my cup of tea until I went grudgingly with an X to see him play - I was instantly converted - wow what a show :-)

    Right back at it!

    Hello all,

Not been about much, but have managed to catch up a bit - shame there were so many mixed responses to 2day. I'm not sure I liked it either - agree with the comments it should have been on a Bank Holiday. There were some good moments on there though - I was driving for quite a few hours, so listened to a fair amount.

Hope everyone is fine & dandy and looking forward to the weekend

    Much love

    Hi cockneybird

Yep - you can't beat a small venue for atmosphere, and usually better beer too! I've never been a fan of James (they just kind of passed me by) but they are Nic's favourites. We recently went to see their frontman, Tim Booth, at a very small gig in Brum. We got right down the front, at one point Tim was looking directly at me and singing and then the girl next to me had his mic handed to her (by Tim himself) for an impromptu duet. Something you dno't see very often at stadium gigs!

  • Comment number 7.

Cockneybird, sounds like you had a great time.

I would love to go and see Jools and Ruby Turner.

Thunderstorm here and I have to go out.

    Morning all!

Back to normal today and I couldn't listen in the office as coffee morning was on. They had some "nice" music playing instead!

However. they're all gone and Ken's back on with Barry!

Can I just say am very much looking forward to seeing Jools at the Ipswich Gaumont (might not be called that any more!) for the umpteenth time in October!

Front row seats this year!!! I believe we will be boogying with the band!

Cockneylass, you might be modded if you are a new blogger? That's a routine thing so not just for you. Nice to see you here

    Debs, good to see you.

Ali, how's the music exams going? Are you driven mad yet?

    Hiya to Gail and CSN

Barry Manilow on Ken's show just now - impromptu live perfomance!!

Right, I'm going to keep my posts short (yay! I hear you all cry!) as they seem to post that way ..... Bingo - what's your secret to getting long posts posted!?!?

Having a fed up day at work today. There's more atmosphere on the moon than in this room. Thankfully my p/t hours kick in on 1st July so I can concentrate all my efforts on my own business venture. I registered my domain name yesterday - scary stuff indeedy!

Awwww man! Barry ........ sob sob. I hate not having a radio on in the daytime.

Thank you csn. I'm determined to make a success of it. So many avenues to explore my head is constantly spinning at the mo!

Also just found out that I passed Assignment 8 of my Nutrition Diploma. And now I am craving cake .... what's that all about!?

We've off to Shakespeare In The Park tomorrow night (local production). I think The Merry Wives of Windsor may include a Victoria Sponge!

I really enjoyed it and even my colleagues switched off the other side and switched on Radio 2 for the day (either because they genuinely were interested or thought it would be a nice thing to do lol)

I loved the comedy song at about 20 to 6

  • Comment number 16.

I do feel sorry for those people whom are afraid to try something different.

I just can't understand the attitude of "I don't know it, so I don't like it.

I think one should try something new each day be it a book by a new author, a record you've not heard ,a piece of art, a different route to work; the list goes on.

It must surely be time to re-evaluate your life if you become so upset when a different voice to the one you were expecting comes out of the radio.

  • Comment number 17.

Ahhhh! Barry, have been known to join in the odd rendition of coco banana at the pubs cappy oke every so often whilst rolling my arms and shaking my bowl of fruit on me ed! a bit like carmen miranda obviously because I am so her double..............not.

Loved Trevor and Tony's hour yesterday with the ole soul, going back to me dayglo leg warmers and shoulder pad days. Showing my age now so I am off back to the grindstone.

Good luck with the business venture Deevs, chin up girlie.

Sezza girl, lucky you, we had front row seats to see the Eagles one year at the NIA. Wow, unbelievable you see so much more at the front.

CSN go go go Ruby doesnt need a mic, she has a fab voice.

Debhasjoined, we were the same not sure but loved it.

    Oooohhhhhhhhhh cakkkkkkkkkkkkkeeeeeeeeee!

    Chow for now!

  • Comment number 18.

    Well said C_L_P - agree 100%.

I really wish I could have listened to more of 2Day - yes, I could listen again but time's short enough as it is ....

I heard the comedy hour bit en route to swimming after work. Yes, I enjoyed it but thought some of the humour was a bit "near the knuckle" for a primetime audience (not me, but thinking of kids who may be in the car with parents etc), and personally, I like a Drivetime show with banter, music, traffic etc at that time of day - whether it's Mr Walker, Maconie, Evans or Mayo.

I admit that I am a bit stuck in my ways with book genres but "braved" a Neil Gayman once and loved it.

Next Wednesday we're off to see some Oscar Wilde in Brum. That's a first for me too.

    Cake!!

Well done Deevs, you've just reminded me I need to make a cake for a fete on Sunday. Now, Cinnamon Nutella Cake or Marmalade Cake?

Agree with you in principle about the comdey - I didn't hear all of yesterday but when R2 used to have a comdey hour on a saturday lunchtime, it was always a late night show repeated and I often had to turn it off

Concerned, you're right, we should try something different. I just read a book club choice that I really would never have thought of myself but I am so glad I did.

    Deevs,
Tell me you weren't visualising Jason Byrne's hedgehog going up a slide!

As for 2day, meh! Take it or leave it, your call. Am I now more or less likely to go out of my way to listen to something that I wouldn't normally have? No! I listen to the Radio when I am at work or in the car, otherwise it is not even on the radar, too much life to get on with.

Although I have discovered that I love Jamie Cullum as a musician, but think he's too far up himself as a DJ where Jazz is concerned. I've also learned that I still can't stand Vanessa Feltz!

Most of yesterday though the Radio was turned off in our office, does that tell a tale?

    DD out

  • Comment number 22.

    DD - eh? Who? Slide?

I'm in a state of idiotic grindom at the mo, having just had a Tweet from the amazingly brilliant John Taylor of Duran Duran.

Only been to 1 small gig, Vonda Shepard (incase you don't know, the singer from Ally McBeal), and she was fantastic, it was great being so close to her and the band.

Good luck with your new venture Deevs and well done on passing another assignment.

I only wish I could have heard more of 2Day, unfortunately as we can't get broadband, listen again not an option, hence the reason I think it would be better on a weekend or bank holiday.

  • Comment number 24.

great to hear the variety and ideas produced. real treasure trove of live recordings lifted my usual channel hoping lunchtime travels. Favourite has to be camera Obscura's cover of Abba's 'supertrooper'!!

  • Comment number 25.

    Hi everyone:

Well, if 2Day has achieved nothing else, it has got people talking! I absolutely loved what I managed to hear: Simon & Jamie, Jo & Vanessa, Michael & David, and last night I listened to Chris & Zoe. All of it really diverse, and somehow it all felt quite personalised - at least, that's how it seemed to me!

I would love it if this became an annual event.

Hope everyone is ok - so, so busy at work, I haven't been able to catch up.

Cockneybird: I went to see Jools a few years ago with my husband. I know this will seem impossible to believe, but he dozed off during the show! Not that he was bored: it was simply that at that time he was working too hard, we had gone for dinner (and wine!) before the show and the heat of the auditorium hit him, and he was out for the count! Only for about 10 minutes, until the noise of about 16 musicians on stage woke him up! Jools & Co were incredible, and Ruby Murray has breathtaking talent.

Debs: Take That tonight for me and MsS. How were the boys when you saw them ... any good?

For 2 years a man was having an affair with an Italian woman.
One night, she confided in him that she was pregnant. Not wanting to ruin
his reputation or his marriage, he paid her a large sum of money if she
would go to Italy to secretly have the child. If she stayed in Italy to
raise the child, he would also provide child support until the child turned
    18. She agreed, but asked how he would know when the baby was born.
To keep it discrete, he told her to simply mail him a post card, and write
'Spaghetti' on the back. He would then arrange for the child support
    payments to begin.
One day, about 9 months later, he came home to his confused wife.
'Honey!,' she said, 'you received a very strange post card today .' He said
'Just give it to me and I'll explain it later,'
She did, and watched as her husband read the card, turned white, and
fainted. On the card was written:
    Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti, Spaghetti.
    Three with meatballs, two without.
    Send extra sauce!

Amazing he must have been truly shattered.

Confession time I slept through Joe Longthorne (Sorry Joe Fans) too much booze and bored to sleep I am afraid, the other half wanted to see him and we were on a day out to the Vegas of the North. He wasnt my cup of tea.

Have just had a conversation with the boss man at work which went, "I need to let you know I have been verbally offered a new job more money, round the corner from home and if I take it I shall be giving you my notice on Thursday next week". "Oh okay" his reply was "I dont think there is anything I can do about that", "oh really" I said "thats disappointing I thought you might at least put up a bit of a fight for me.........." "oh okay then leave it with me" was the reply.
Sometimes I wonder how they make it to the lofty heights of senior management I really do ;-/

Sorry guys, but I'm on the road for two hours in the morning (Chris) and two hours in the evening (Steve and Simon) and I use Radio Two as my survival fall-back, so 2Day wasn't all that good for me, especially in the late afternoon when it was quite clear that some (twosomes) were recorded i.e. no travel news at the usual times. Inane comedy after the 5pm news made me switch over to a commercial station. I agree with other comments, it would have been better on a bank-holiday. Chris, Steve and Simon - keep up the good work - I need your encouragement, music and humour to keep me going. Radio Two rocks.

    Afternoon each

Lovely and sunny in Fife today. Been faffing about hoovering, washing and getting new tyres today but I'm done now - feet up and coffee.

Missed most of the radio yesterday as I was self-evaluating with my work colleagues - an exercise in pointlessness! And I'm miffed I missed Ruby Turner. Saw her a couple of years ago and she is fab and I can recommend her album 'I'm Travelling On', in fact I was playing it the other day.

Off to catch up, back in a wee while.

    Hi everyone:

I do apologise to all for the following post - if Take That is not your thing, then please scroll down now!

Just have to share a little, and may not get the chance when I get into work.

Well, what an incredible show I saw last night. I have been to some fantastic gigs, but this was on a scale of its own. These guys are just indescribable. The way the worked, the talent they all have, their enthusiasm, it was just all fantastic.

Robbie was brilliant. I am not his No.1 fan but I have to say I am a convert. He was totally self-deprecating and whatever ego he had in the past, it wasn't there last night.

My daughter and I managed to get a really good spot at the front, at the side of the stage. Without fail, at some point there were two members of the band at "our" side of the stage, remembering us in the "cheap" seats - i.e. standing! As with all stadium gigs, the stage was massive, and there was a lot going on at the front that we couldn't see, but the screens were terrific, and then in another song or two, Gary and Howard would appear at our side. (Daisy, I was thinking of you when Howard appeared!).

Cheryl: I did mean to come back to you the other day when we were discussing TT and you were saying the tickets were just too expensive this year. I agreed with you - when MsS told me what her boyfriend had paid for the tickets, I thought he had taken leave of his senses! But, I can honestly say, last night, every single one of those British Pounds was handed back, and then some.

A great night, and of course I am still on a high - I have never been on the blog at this time in the morning!

    Thanks for listening!

Debs: MrS will be very pleased to hear your foodie update - he has missed them!

    me again:

Just having a quick cup of tea, and thought I would catch up.

CSN: thank you, I did have such a great evening. It was so lovely to feel happy last night, after the past six months or so which have been so difficult. Hope you have a lovely visit with your gorgeous wee grandson.

Debs: hope the exam goes well for your GD. xx

Bids: I know, I would have been made up for life with Daisy had I managed to get an autograph for her. Not a chance, but next time ... who knows?! I just couldn't believe Chris was playing music this morning with a "C" theme. Beez would have being going mad!

Very quick morning for me, so far - hope that continues!

    Morning All,

It's a bit quiet on here this morning?!? Thank goodness it's Friday, I can't wait to fall into my bed tomorrow morning, just as dawn is breaking, after Street Pastors. Let's hope my neighbours don't bash around too much.

Chrissie, Glad you had a fab time last night and as you said it's been a tough time for you recently, so it's good to let your hair down :) Re Pat and Margaret (and VW) I met a woman the other day who was the spitting image of Julie Walters in her role as Pat, which just made me chuckle to myself all day.

Really enjoyed VW on the show this morning - thanks Chris - she is one of my heros.

Just had a visit from the Top Boss Woman, although I am not sure she got her priorities right as she'd been to see the Bishop first! We've had a brew and a right good gossip.

The sun is shining here and it's almost lunch time...hooray.

Hope everyone is ok and looking forward to the weekend.

    Morning all!

Christoff, I thoroughly enjoyed VW on this morning’s show. More women please. But, anymore talk of the ‘C’ word, until at least November, you are seriously going to get a slap!

Good to hear you were in my neck of the woods yesterday, stalking a car. I worked in Grayshott for many years and would often frequent the bakers you mentioned. The pasties sounded divine.

Thanks to all those who gave me a mention about my Wimbledon trip. What a great day we had, with just an hour and half rain break, we saw some great tennis.

Not sure who has them, but can I borrow the ranty pants? 25 squid to park your car, and a tenner for two coffees and two (tiny) cream and jam scones. Thank goodness we took a packed lunch. But being a bit chilly the need was for something hot! The tickets fortunately were a gift, had they not been I would have come round with cap in hand! ;)

Chrissie, glad you and your daughter enjoyed the TT concert. You absolutely can’t beat live shows. It’s going to be a long time before you come down to planet earth, and why not!

It was nice to see a chatty blog when I logged on, and new faces, which is always welcome.

Bright and breezy here, with a promise of it warming up. Let’s hope they’re right for a change.

Apologies for long-ish post, hope I haven’t bored you. Now, will it post?

    Pen xx

ps nice to see Bingo and a few other lurkers popping in.

Debs-I'm glad you enjoyed them too and managed to avoid A & E:)

CSN-have fun with little grandson later.

Bids-it's very kind of you to take your neighbour to the train station.

cockneybird-don't do too much housework on your day off.

Ali-hope you enjoyed the gossip with Top Boss Woman.

    Hello Pen.

Glad you enjoyed Wimbledon, it must have been lovely to be there.

I know what you mean by the high prices, it's the same at the British Grand Prix.

Dont get me started on value for money, if you do I shall have to dust off my soap box and stand precariously on it in me stilletto's, but unfortunately at the moment hoovering is the way forward. TTFN

AliB: you really deserve a good lie-in tomorrow - I hope you get it!

Pen: such rip-off prices, I know, but then where else in the world would you see such incredible traditions and reminders everywhere of tennis history?! I do agree, the price of car parking was completely ridiculous. Glad you had a great time, though, and saw some tennis, not to mention the people watching! "They" are just a tiny bit sneaky - when I was there, many years ago, it rained all day. But they managed to get two games played - games, not matches - and because of that, we were not entitled to the compensation of tickets for the following year!

    Hi Maddy!

Lunchtime - can't wait for my ham roll ... down to earth with a bump!

    #67, lol

Chrissie, I utterly and totally agree, and if it is something you are passionate about, then push the boat out. As you know only too well of late, life is too short, and we have to enjoy every day x. I just think 'they' really take the 'pee', but the decision is ours as to whether we pay it or not. I know what you mean about the compensation rule, it seems so unfair.

I'll shut up now, as I appreciate it's not everyone's cup of tea. After all if the conversation was about football, I would be scrolling down! hehe

    Hello.

Cockneybird, don't you just love housework. I have cleaned upstairs, done a pile of ironing and just stopped for a cup of tea before tackling the downstairs. LOL!

Chrissie and Marjie, thank you. I am sure it will be a fun packed evening with little boy.

    Pen, glad you enjoyed Wimbledon.

Ali, hope you get a restful day tomorrow.

Can I borrow the ranty pants?

Olympic tickets - what a stupid stupid palarva it all is - re-logged on this am as not successful the first time around and it said "available" basketball, cycling, diving - the 3 events I originally applied for and didnt get - oh yeh available alright if you can pay upwards of £200 for each ticket - shambles.....

    Hmph!

Anyway, can I also just do a little "go girl" to Laura Robson who is just right now holding her own - she prob wont win, but what a start to her "senior career" bless (I'm talking tennis if no one else has a scooby what I'm chatting about!)

Right not here - or watching the tennis.....

Mind you, if Sharapova doesn't stop shreiking every time the ball the ball goes near her, I'm going to have to give her a slap!

Sezza, I'm right there, didn't want to jinx it by saying anything. Do what I do an watch it muted. Aside from the grunting, I can't stand some of the commentary! Got that tip from my dd daddy, he never ever watched football with the sound up!

  • Comment number 77.

    Afternoon,

I'm keeping an eye on Laura on the official Wimbledon site...go girl :) Pen totally agree I often turn the sound down watching tennis; and my Dad, on the odd occasion that the Cricket is on terrestrial TV will turn the sound off, watch the pictures and listen to the radio!

Nearly time for me to go home, 2:30 finish on a Friday, so I might get some of the match on TV.

Although I should be working, I am actually writing a reference for a friend of mine to adopt a child - such a privileged to do this.

    Have a great weekend everyone.

    Lots of love

Hey Seza, Pen, CSN and Ali - well what about Laura - didnt she just hold her own, I'm hoping there is an interview with her later.

I'm enjoying being re-aquainted with tennis - avoided it like the plague for about 10 years due to too much "big serving" and in MHO not enough rallys. But yes Seza - the girls - not even "grunting" major noises - so very un laaaydee like! LOL

Right am actually doing some work stuff believe it or not - the benefit of working from home with a laptop!

Give me an hour and I'll declare you know what open...

Chrissie, sounds like you and GD had a great time last night. If you enjoyed it, it's worth the boyfriend's money.

Halloooooo to everyone else, hope you're going to be in the bar later. I have been good all week (foodwise) and I'm now enjoying a mushroom pizza and a glass of Merlot (that was for Mr. S) yummy.

Been looking after 1yr old and 6yr old today, set off home about 5, totally forgetting about the bloomin' Highland Show - why on earth would people want to leave at 5? Stupid people.

I'll be there on Sunday, the last day, hoping for some bargains in the plant tent.

Back soon when I've topped up my glass.

    Evening all

Hope everyone is fine and dandy, hugs available to those who need one.

Think my changes of scene for the past week or so have been as good as the proverbial rest, and I have returned recharged. Although not entirely happy to be back at the grindstone, I spent most of my first day back wondering why I'd bothered having the time off, or why I'd bothered going back. Still, I'm sure I'll get back into the routine of it and the money comes in handy.

Won't bore you with my time off stories, other than to say there were some highs and some lows.

Major low being handed a local paper on arrival at my parents and discovering a friend (who showed me the ropes in my very first job) in the obit column. We have several mutual friends, at least one of whom who would have known to tell me and didn't, and I guess I'm now feeling a combination of shock and sadness at not getting to say bye to the lovely DJ (funeral has been and gone) and hurt that no one thought to tell me.

On the upside I've spent time in some of my favourite places with some of my favourite people, covered a fair few miles on foot (averaging 2-3 a day which is more than normal), as well as in the car (over 700, not used to having to top up with go juice so often, it's got a tiddly tank) and have generally enjoyed myself and had a few new experiences to boot.

Sezza: re your ringers and cake comment, I have rung for several ringers / church peoples weddings where we've been paid in food and drink instead of the usual pennies. Makes a nice change :) I've also been to weddings as a guest and gone and rung too, which is all very well til you register (too late) that your wedding outfit is completely unsuitable for ringing in... take it from me, those droopy necked tops are not a good idea!

    Hugs to all
    Oz
