Glow Manilow Glow.

Chris Evans | 12:05 UK time, Friday, 11 March 2011

Superstars have one thing in common. They are all very, very good at what they do. You cannot become a superstar any other way. You can have a shifty five minutes of fame, but superstardom will never be yours otherwise.

Barry's new album is called Fifteen Minutes. All about fame and how it comes and goes, and what to do with it whilst it's there. Needless to say, I will be listening to it all weekend.

I know exactly what you mean Chris, superstars like Barry Manilow have that that extra special something which is not found in the rest.

I love all Bazza's songs, especially Mandy, Can't Smile Without You, I Made It Through The Rain, in fact the latter is my favourite.

I'm afraid I didn't hear him this morning and so I am going to listen very shortly.

Great show Chris - loved Mr. M. I'm working at home today so I was able to listen to the whole thing.

All you Bloggers that missed it - you just have to listen at the weekend!

    Still sunny in North Norfolk!

    Hi Chris

Will definitely be listening again as I was at work this morning when Sir Bazza Of Manilow Land was on air with you. He's my guilty pleasure - I love him!

I will never forget the evening in Hyde Park with MW,a! Errol and the former MrDeevs when Mr Manilow headlined Prawns In The Pork. It was all picnics, feather boas and a lorra lorra dancing (I think the 3 of them actually disowned me at one point!) I even had a very rude text from the lovely Beez when John Barrowman appeared on stage to duet with Barry.

I so wish you'd taken me up on my Tweet offer of becoming your tea lady for the morning ......!

My fave Manilow song has to be Could It Be Magic - one of the Top 25 Most Played on my iPod (out of nearly 5000 tracks). Closely followed by Copacabana, of course ......

Just over an hour to go until I leave here for my hospital appointment for the Dental Wimps Of Cannockshire ..!

I can almost hear that cork popping on the first bottle of red at ChezNic this evening.

    Hiya

Am not the biggest Barry fan but loved the show this morning. It really works having the guest in for such a long time. That makes the "interview" so much more relaxed and we get a real feeling of their personality coming through

Oh, and Christoff, re you blog today. I think there's a reason why you've been so successful!

Still sunny here today so washing should be well aired on the line!

Deevs, good luck this afternoon. I know you'll be fine but to help you, remember all your yoga breathing. Techniques I learned for controlling breathing about 14 1/2 yrs ago have helped me through panicky feeling

Off for lunch with the girls now!

    Hey Chris and everyone,

Love the big Friday interview idea, it makes the day a bit more special, never been particularly partial to Bazza, but what a charismatic guy and you cant help but enjoy his music when it's on.

I'd love to have heard you do a longer interview with George as well, I think I might have a bit of a man crush on him actually. Not sure if it was you who got him on Twitter, but if it was ,thanks, he's equally good value on there.

Hi and best of everything to the rest of you. I'm so far out of the loop, it's not even funny.
I expect that like most of you, I've never had to work so hard for so little....Ho hum - the only way is up!

Max is off for his first Cub camp this weekend and his first time away from us for more than one night.
We kitted him out with all the gear last weekend (even a compass - I love a compass!) and he is so excited, I can't tell you....We on the other hand, are dreading it a bit. It's going to be a funny weekend.

Still, bring on the rugby....Come on England! Hope it's a good game.

Might be around tonight, as the CMM is out to play....WOOHOO! I can watch any film I like! Or I can just whack on the new Elbow Album, I've listened to it twice today, and I think Chris had it right when he used the word "astonishing". It's an epic!

    Have a good weekend

Hey Ripsticles - I'm sure Max will have a wonderful time - you enjoy 5 mins of peace whilst you can!

Deevs aka Lola - good luck this arvo - I share your fear - irrational some may say, but when you are scared - you just are. I'll be interested to see how you get on.

Hope you get on OK with the Wimp's Dental appointment Deevs.

Irrational fears are something which I think maybe we all have at least one of. Mine is the panicky feeling I get just before going out the front door which leaves me as soon as I'm outside the door. I've had it all my life so it's not likely to go now, it's just me.

    Hiya Peeps,

Will have to listen again this weekend, I LOVE Barry Manilow.

My top tenuous to the great man was in Venice in 2005

We were strolling along when this giant of a man came striding towards us.
No, not Barry, but his bodyguard. I passed within 3" of the man himself!!!

    Swoon :-}

Hope everyone is well or getting better, good luck for all those with exams, and Deevs......RELAX!

Afternoon CLP and the rest, heard a good bit of Bazza this morning, though I'm not the biggest fan in the world he did strike me as being a decent guy. Having said that I did enjoy a spot of Copacabana when it came on.

Loved, loved, LOVED the Duran Duran concert last night on Radio 2, so much so that I'm going to listen again while I do my ironing!

I don't know who to support this weekend rugby wise, I am English by birth but my Mum is Scottish, and I've lived in Scotland for more than 12 years... such a conundrum!

Good luck Deevs for your appointment this afternoon, as well as your breathing just focus on another lovely weekend with your man, which will begin when it's over!

Hope everyone is having a good day

    Hiya lovely bloggers,

JG, Sezza, AnnieG, MtD, Rosie, KKS, CSN, Bids, Jillygoat and MtF a HUGE thank you for all your kind wishes and lovely messages.

For anyone thinking of having laser eye surgery - go for it! You don't feel a thing during the procedure, it takes less than ten minutes, afterwards there is some discomfort but if you follow their advice you won't have any problems. Two hours after my procedure I had no discomfort at all! I can't believe what I am able to see and I still don't have the full 20/20 vision! When things have settled it will be amazing. Anyone who would like to discuss it in more detail feel free to contact me on FB or email.

Baggy - re your post #186 on the 5th March. I have to say that it is the only negative comment I have had from anyone, but I suppose someone had say something. For your info laser eye surgery for sight correction does NOT cause cataracts - I could go into the technicallities of it all but I don't know that you would be that interested. As I am sure you will have gathered I did a lot of research before having the procedure done.

    Hi to Dreamer and Dook.

Lyndyloo - how lovely to see you on the blog. Babyman is absolutely gorgeous, I love seeing your photo's and updates on FB. Have a lovely time on your adventure xx

AF - I hope you are feeling better.

KKS - I hope you are feeling better too. Thanks for your kind words.

Chrissie - loved your take on Heart of Glass.

Gingembre - good luck with the marathon.

Debs - hope you are feeling better. Well done to GD on her exam and good luck for the next one.

MtD - good luck with your exam.

Myra - welcome to the blog.

Susan - belated birthday wishes, I hope you had a lovely day xx

Chris and the team - congratulations on your award, very well deserved!

Last but by no means least thank you to my lovely friend Chrissie for letting you all know how I was doing and passing on all your lovely messages to me xx

It's freezing here today - definately more snow on the way! My sister is travelling up from Hampshire today for a wedding tomorrow on my B-I-L's side of the family. I really hope it doesn't snow until after the bride and groom and safely inside for the day! I'm out to dinner tonight with my lovely sisters and their hubbies. Being the baby sister I have a funny feeling I will be spoiled tonight!

    Take care
    Stay safe and warm!

    Hi All.

A sure sign that Spring has sprung? The horse in the field opposite isn't wearing her New Zealand rug for the first time in months and crows are landing in the back garden, collecting all the fur that has come off Dylan after brushing him. What lovely soft lined nests they will have.

Deevs and Debs, as you know, I visit the dentist on average about ten times a day. Getting me in that chair is altogether a different story.

I try and use the method of.... by such and such a time it will all be over and once it is, I usually say to myself, well it wasn't really that bad. Its the working up to it. If I can get an appt and be seen within the hour it is so much easier.

Debs, sounds like a busy weekend ahead. My GD had pretty much the same when she was tea staining a couple of years ago.

    Yikes look at the time!

Hope to back for a natter later.

And ... hello Mary/Maweena - welcome back! Great to see you back on the blog and how fantastic that everything is ok with you and your lovely eyes! Hope you have a special time with your family, and I am sure you will be thoroughly spoiled tonight! xx

I have a fear of going to the dentist and the hairdressers. When I lived in Hampshire my hairdresser's salon was above my dental surgery ....... it took me a long to get over that!!!

Any news from Dental Deevs or exam frazzled mtd, yet?

I arrived home from work a bit early today so am indulging in a cuppa and part two of Midsomer Murders.

Was up and about really early this morning - up the M90 with white fields and hills along the motorway, then took the back roads round Loch Leven, which was so pretty with the white hills behind it. Snow has all gone now but lots more forecast over the weekend. So I think I'll be eating the peanut m&ms and pizza myself. I SURVIVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for all the good luck wishes - I feel such a wimp but as said above, a fear is a fear (although I can NEVER imagine having a phobia of the hairdreser!).

She (the lady dentist) specialises in nervous numpties like me and this was my 2nd appointment with her, the first being early November last year. In a nutshell, she's recommended not jumping in with an extraction for my dodgy toof, but not to have root canal treatment either as of the 4 roots holding it in place, only 1 is damaged. She said if it flares up again (could be 2 weeks, could be 10 years, could be never) I can contact the hospital straight away and go on her list for extraction with IV sedation, which I'm happy with. Today she scaled and polished me, and I've got to go back (May was the earliest appointment!) for a filling in one of my back toofs which I chipped last week. She commented that its like seeing a different person from the first appointment and was impressed, but felt I'm better seeing her again than starting afresh with another dentist. I told her about my yoga and the breathing and zoning out and she said she wholly endorses yoga for relaxtion and the improvement is very obvious!

Yes, I was so chuffed I went and treated myself to 2 new pairs of jeans - in a smaller size, of course!

Now my man is kitchen, the wine is poured and I am very very very happy!

Oh - I also read the first piece of my course and feel confident that by the end of the weekend I'll have submitted Assignment 1 on general anatomy.

Lovely to read all your comments and great to see Mary and Crumpy and Ripstickles back in the land of the blogging.

    Evening all

Feeling a bit down tonight after starting off the day in a cheery mood due to sunshine outside and the candyman, had to go then so missed BM. I think the downer is purely down to the fact I'm tired, achey and have no weekends away to look forward to for a few weeks. Could really do with some time off from the grindstone too, it's doing my nut in, but I refuse to book time off with nothing planned to make use of the time. No point wasting my time off, although I guess I could spend the time sewing...

Anyway, I think I'll head for bed soon in the hope that I'll get a good night's kip despite the aches and wake up feeling much better tomorrow.

Hiya: second FNWC in a row for me! Lovely to see so many great comments, and just lovely to see so many different people on the blog!

Have just poured a wee glass of wine, so cheers!

Rips: how difficult for you and Mrs Rips to let Max go this weekend. But it will be wonderful to have him back, and I bet he appreciates you all a bit more, and you will appreciate him too! xx

Maddy: wonderful song from Bazza. Love that, and Weekend In New England, one of my all time favourites. My sister suffers from the same feeling of going out the front door, too. She is fine when she has done it, but oh boy, what a struggle it can be for her.

Pen: missed you this afternoon! I would love to hang my washing out - the way things are going in Bonnie Scotland, this could be around 21st June at the earliest!

Annie: very sensible of you to stay home - no way are you a wimp. It's just too dodgy.

Crumpy: lovely to see you here today. I would dearly love to make the Chester meet, but not to be. I really hope to see you (and lots of other lovely bloggers) at some point this year.

How lovely to see Linda NY, NY; Laura JS and Rebecca - loyal fans of Mr Manilow - welcome to the blog, and please join in with us!

    Mikey Mikey: hiya!

Debs: hang in there Toots! The GD will appreciate your efforts, I promise!

Cheryl: glad it all went well - you will conquer this, I am sure. Re: hairdressers: if you could just spend a day in my shoes, you would understand why I would choose the dentist any time, over the hairdresser! We all have our story to tell, I guess!

Jillygoat: ooh, very interesting re: Moose. I have often thought of him - he started the whole concept of blog meets, not entirely supported by our lovely CLP, but it has turned out amazingly well, hasn't it?

    I am rambling, sorry!

Blog meets have been amazing Chrissie.

I still have one or two that I haven't met yet. I hope one day to have a full scorecard :)

I have just got home to two phone calls from a consumer survey centre.

Apparently I recently filled in a survey! I certainly did not.

Anyway, I was shattered when I walked through the door, after driving in excess of 1,200 miles this week. I calmly tried to explain to the first caller and he put the phone down on me!

So, 5 minutes later, a young lady came on from the same place still insisting that I would benefit from answering their questions.. She had very little knowledge of the English language and I tried very hard to try and get a phone number from her, eventually, she said that she would remove me their database.

My phone never rings, I have the preferential caller set up, so must check if it needs updating.

    Am I ranting?

Possibly, all I wanted really was to be left alone.

Right going to have a read back.

Hi to everyone else too :)

My dinner has just gone on and will be ready when Mr Mobs walks through the door at 10.30 pm when he finishes work.

I was supposed to collect home from work tonight, but we got a phone call from the garage today, to say that his car was ready to collect. Only a 50 mile round trip, but it means I can have a well earned slurp now.

    Cheers me dears.

Watching BBC news on Japan. Hard to comprehend the scale of the disaster, isn't it?

Annie, it makes other things like my rant just now, seem trivial really.

I havent seen any tv coverage yet, but it has been on the radio all day.

    MTF.xx

  • Comment number 58.

MTF: no, you are not ranting at all. The thing is: these calls are invasion of our privacy - they are a menace. I try to be polite when I get these calls, but the minute you say "thank you, but no thank you" it starts to get messy, doesn't it? These calls are an absolute disgrace, but a product of the times we live in, unfortunately. Deep breaths, and perhaps a cup of tea - or something stronger!

    Hey Gang!

    Thanks for the mentions.....

Seza, Debs, My Little Highland Warrior ;0), Chrissie and Deevs.

I dropped him off at six and had to call him back so I could say goodbye.
I don't have a great memory, but being there tonight stirred some of the old grey cells enough to let me recall my first camping trip with the scouts. He is going to have a ball, isn't he!!
Got a bit unnecessary on the way home, must be my age.

Really lovely to 'see' you all.

Trying to watch a fillum (Green Zone with the man who played me in my film) so may be back later....if you'll have me?

    Cheers

I would never put the phone down on anyone Chrissie, so for him to do it to me, was like red rag to a bull.

I am in fact having a nice cold Scrumpy Jack. Yes the very slurp that I was giving up for the whole of March.

I was doing so well, until I got to Bids' last weekend. LOL!!

    Its a weekend treat now.

Annie: as much as I am moaning about not being able to hang out washing, hairdressers, and unwanted phone calls, I have to say that I am so sincerely sorry for the people of Japan. It is horrific, so difficult to really get a handle on it, really.

  • Comment number 62.

Rips, he will have such a great time.

I cried when I came back from my first outdoor pursuits adventure.

How must my poor parents have felt!!

    Has he gone far?

  • Comment number 63.

Ahh Rips, he is going to have a ball. I always have to drag mine back for a hug. It's getting harder now one of them is taller than me!

MTF, boo to the junk callers. It really annoys me when they say you've done something or because you are a customer of a company, they are allowed to ring you back even if you've blocked junk calls

The situation in Japan is awful isn't. We don't realise how lucky we are sometimes

    Sezza xx

  • Comment number 64.

Rips: bless you for calling Max,, just to say goodbye! And, yes, of course, he is going to have a ball! Enjoy your movie - I will try to pop back in later to say goodnight, though I am not going anywhere just now!

MTF: I have been there, honestly. You end up feeling dreadful about ending these calls, when you have not even been a party to it. Enjoy your Scrumpy! I am still on my wee glass of red - just about due for a top-up!

Hi Sezza: how goes it? I know what you mean about your "baby" being taller than you. I said bye, bye to MsS tonight - off out to a Cancer Research Charity Evening - I couldn't believe how tall she was, in her new shoes!

    Hi Stace and Chrissie,

I didn't have to call him back in the telephonic sense. More the literal sense "Max, I'm going now!" *from a distance* "Ok Daddy" ('Daddy' that'll be next to go!). "Max! Come and say goodbye"...."oh yeah, bye Daddy".

    Bless him.....grrrrrr!

My boy1 is definately taller than me but never more so than I when I bought him new hike boots last week! Now he towers over me! I think I'm going to have to start wearing a lot more high heels!

CSN & MTF, hope you enjoy your dinners but I'd never sleep if I ate this late

couple of glasses of wine had. Dinner had. chilled feeling.

Watching the news at the moment, tragic isn't it - to think I was in that part of the world in April last year.

TGIF. Up reasonably early tomorrow as off to barnet fixers - I don't understand that phobia either I love going and getting pampered (mind you, dentists are another thing altogether.....)

Nice to see some old (not aged, just familiar, you know what I mean) faces here tonight. The shed must be nearly ready for a grand re-opening and the leaves were cleared off the hot tub ages ago.

    Hiya CLP Blogpoppets,

Just popping in briefly from next door (although my blogging 'roots' are from this here blog, and I like to touch base now and again!) to say what a fabulous Breakfast show, Chris. Not sure what the neighbours (or the plumber!) thought of my sing-a-long-a Bazza, but I enjoyed every single moment. I love a bit of cheese now and again! But what was all the talk about knitting Chris? The poor bloke had just got off the plane all jet lagged, and you were confusing him with talk of Royal doll knitting patterns! Not very rock and roll!

MTF, were the pictures you were talking about on yesterdays blog, Mable Lucie Attwell drawings? I seem to remember them being on t-shirts, bags and pencil cases in the 70's.

Rips, I am sure young master Rips is having a whale of a time round the campfire. Ging gang gooly and all that! My son, on his first camp, despite being despatched with clean clothes for the three days he was away, returned home with the same clean clothes in his rucksack having not changed at all! He was a bit tired and whiffy, but he couldn't wait to go away on the next trip.

Mtd I hope that your exam went really well, when do you know the results?

Deevs, I used to be a wimp when it comes to dentists, but I recently had root canal work done, and my dentist was great, I didn't feel a thing. Now I don't mind going at all.

Hope you all have a really lovely weekend, and may see you here or next door next week.

Mr Mobs has brought the newly fixed lawnmower home.

Re those annoying calls just when you settle down to eat or watch TV, etc.

I've now got a phone with caller number announcement and if there's no number (withheld or unavailable or international (Indian call centres) I don't answer them but unfortunately some of the are very persistent. When I do give in and answer it's often either automated or some impertinent person asking me why I'm happy to be paying £5 a year more for my energy, I tell them I like paying too much and put the phone down.

The worst one I ever had was when a man said "I'd like to speak to the man of the house please" I said "There's no one here at the moment, what's it about?" He said "We are doing a survey regarding animal testing for cosmetics and need to speak to a man". I was speechless and put the phone down.

It will be a quiet w/end here ,have the boys again for dinner then I;ll take them home as little one has footie on sunday.

Dont go mad on that golf course with your mower or else they will be expecting you every week .hahaha!!!

I just might do some spring and then again I may not .I'll wait and see what tomorrow brings .

Well MR B has just turned in and so must I. Will be saying a prayer tonight for all of those people that are caught up in this terrible disaster and for the poor souls that have lost their lives who didn't stand a chance .

There go I but for the grace of God.

So it's Good night and God Bless .

    Take care ...Bids.xxx.

    Marj...

I have got a caller display unit.

They called this morning on an 0800 number. I didn't get to the phone in time. I did redial the number, but it was an automated message telling me who had called. I have now been warned that it might be a scam and by dialing the number back, I may have incurred a peak rate charge. I wont know, until the bill arrives.

MTF-I've heard of those calls, that's the problem if there is a number, it's probably safer not to call back unless it's a recognised number. I'm sure I've probably fallen to them at some time.
