Thoughts From The Bath

Chris Evans | 11:02 UK time, Thursday, 23 December 2010

Arrived in York, yesterday afternoon ahead of this morning's outside broadcast.

I was a little late due to big freeze train issues but to be honest I was glad of the extra relaxing time. My life is so busy nowadays, an enforced delay is a welcome excuse to do nothing for a bit, far better than doing a bit for nothing. I was cold though, as the carriage I had chosen to sit in was bereft of any heating. Consequently the first thing I did upon arrival was order a piping hot coffee from one of those US franchises. You know, the type that uses up far too much of everything to produce far too little of anything.

Armed now with a plastic cup hand warmer, I waited for my arranged lift to my accommodation. However, this was not just any lift. It was a lift from the Archbishop of York's driver. Except it wasn't because as I have already mentioned my train was late and so he was once again busy driving his boss. Instead, a very nice lady called Karen was charged with the task of picking up this dodgy DJ.

I thought I was off to a hotel but no, the team were being honoured with a bed each at John Sentamu's official residence, Bishopthorpe Palace. "No need for the trunks or gym kit," I thought to myself. My room was lovely, not at all what I thought it might be but much more of what it should be. Modest, welcoming but most unexpected of all - someone else's ! I thought it was a permanent guest room but again, no. I ventured into the wardrobe and there was a life in clothes.

Whose life I have no idea but whoever you are, thank you for the loan of your room. But seriously, next time . . .

Hang on a minute, there probably won't be a next time. Let's just leave it at thanks. And I'm so glad I saw the clothes in the wardrobe because I was just about to use your toothbrush.

    Nice one Chris!

Reminds me of a party I went to when I was about 15 or 16. It was an impromptu gathering, hosted at the local Vicarage by the somewhat rebellious vicar's daughter (a friend of mine at the time, with the most dishiest of big brothers!) as the Vicar and his good lady wife were away on a mini golfing break.

My then-bestest mate in thw world and I ended up sharing the Vicar's bed!!

I still don't know to this day whether the rebellious daughter was rumbled for throwing the party, but it was a good night, nonetheless!

Happy Christmas to you, Tash, Noah and the Breakfast team. It's been a great first year, and THANK YOU for everything.

    Muchos Amore.

I relish the odd delay from time to time - good reading opportunity!

Not too sure where I stand on Christianity - but the Bish of York is a completely wonderful ambassador for Heaven. Top stuff.

And Impromptu fun is often the best fun of all! Deevs - anything you'd like to confess re. the son of a preacher-man?!

AliB glad you got everything sorted - enjoy your dins!

I got up this morning and was telling Mr Hannah about the fact that the Bish was on R2 this morning and he got very excited telling me stories from the preaches that he's seen him do. Including one that involved a fiver in a torch as an object lesson about faith.

Mr Hannah went to uni in Hull and was part of a youth event that was hosted in York Minster (muchos excitement there!)

Apparently at a youth service he wore a hoodie over his vicar shirt! Pretty sure it caused uproar but it was a youth service so it was kinda dressing to fit in like I'd wear my best shirt when I'm up the front talking (only done it once at my current church and it was a youth meeting so I wore jeans and t-shirt and I did the same at my parents church when I spoke in the summer - mainly cos I was being me and was so stressed about it going okay that what I wore was last thing on my mind hehe.)

  • Comment number 5.

dispite being involved in my church I only do creche (yay, the under 3's) so the only time I have spoken in church was my wedding dress, needless to say I was wearing a long ivory dress ;-)

What a brilliant programme this morning from York, with the very amiable Archbishop, his lovely wife, the choir, gardener and everyone else involved.

I'm a bit worried about Johnny, as he was enjoying dressing up in all those panto costumes rather too much, especially the girlie ones!!! :o))

I absolutely LOVED KT Tunstall and James Dean Bradfield's 'Fairy Tale of New York'... they really should record it!!!

    Afternoon all,

I have been quiet for a few days. I listened to the second half of the show this morning with a cuppa under the duvet. I really enjoyed it and am starting to feel more and more Christmassy by the minuet. Thanks for that CLP and the team!

I finally managed to collect my new (to me) car from the snow bound garage on Tuesday. ;-) I love it (so far) and wished the weather would improve enough to go for a nice drive into the countryside!

Other than that not all has been good! My daughter (19 years old) had a massive panic attack just as she left work and seriously thought she was going to die! The phone call we received was terrifying to be honest as there was panic all around her as she gasped for air! How frightening for us all. We have had her to the doctor and checked out.........all seems good apart from him saying she is depressed! She has had a very hard couple of years and I think things have finally got the better of her! ;-(

    Happy Birthday Baggy! X-x-

    Keith

I went through a bout of depression a few years back, and it changed me one heck of a lot. Panic attacks was one of the things I suffered with. They are very frightening - both to the sufferer and those around them. With the right treatment and support, your daughter will covercome these attacks in time, but she must listen to the advice given. I think too many people suffer depression in silence, convinced they are OK.

Here's hoping you and the rest of your family have a lovely Christmas, and that 2011 brings everything you have always hoped for, and more.

    Take more.

    Thanks Deevs,

I know she has to come to terms with her problem it is very hard for her to let it all out! I also have been diagnosed with clinical depression a few years ago after being diagnosed with cancer. I did finally acknowledge that I had a problem and have come back stronger than ever! I know she will get there with the right help except it is as the doctor said to her she has to want the help!

I missed KT on R2 this morning - I was running late and then got to work and they were contaminating the airwaves with the local station instead :(

    Watcha,

Chris, Brilliant show this morning and I was so glad that I had the morning off, so I could watch via the red button. Its official the Arch Bish ROCKS! What a thoroughly decent man and never shied away from telling it how it is, a good advert for being a Christian. I would imagine that after this morning a Christmas show from York might be a regular feature - well done Chris and Team xx

It says in the Bible that you should "come as you are" to worship God, so I don't think he minds what you wear. Personally, I always dress in my Sunday best as to me I am going to worship the King and I wouldn't turn up in scruffy clothes to visit the Queen so I wouldn't do it to visit with the King or Kings; that is just my personal opinion.

    Keith BigUn,

So sorry to hear about your daughter. (Also your cancer; my mum has had the Big C twice herself. Wouldn't wish it on anyone). I am a depression-suffer (almost recovered, yayy!). And I understand your daughter's feelings; I have had two nervous breakdowns myself, and even attempted to...well, you know,... on a number of occasions (apologies if that's too much information for some - I'm not ashamed that I have had this illness and am used to living with it). I would not be here today if it weren't for my dog Jasper; as daft as that sounds it's actually recorded in my medical notes.

I bet you are a fantastic dad. It was great that you were there to answer her call, as distressing as it was for you.

I know that, for your daughter, it may seem desperately hard just to get through each day, but I really hope she's able to accept the doctor's advice and support and hang on in there. I guess you never stop telling her that she is a very, very special person and they only made one of her. One day, it will be OK.

Here are a couple of suggestions, if you want them. I also (as well as taking medication) found Cognitive Behavioural Therapy extremely helpful. It's not weird mumbo-jumbo, but simple thinking about identifying each step along the road to a breakdown and trying to deal with each bit. I understand how hard it can be to talk about things, especially when you feel so raw, and there is a really fantastic, well-written and non-preachy book that I strongly recommend. I noticed that it was one that my psychiatric counsellor at the hospital was using a great deal (along with other books in the same series) and decided to buy for myself. It's called "Overcoming Depression' - you can buy a used copy on Am@zon for just over £4.(Can put a link to it on Faceboot if anyone's interested). It explains CBT and how it works. It's got little 'tasks' you can do by yourself and you can read through it at your own pace. To be honest, after I bought the book, it sat on the shelf, unread, for AGES - but when I read it I found it extremely helpful and I wished I'd read it sooner! However, books alone are no substitute for proper, professional, medical treatment.

But more than anything else, Keith, please do take care of yourself. I know that it can seem like the whole of life and the universe is pressing down on you - but you are a very special person, and it sounds like you have already come through so much already with your dignity intact. Keep going - your daughter won't feel like this forever. As you mentioned, the most important step is admitting that there's a problem that needs treatment - and understanding that this is NOT a submission to weakness or personal failure but a proper, recognised, medical illness that IS treatable - in the same way as are a common, cold, a broken leg, or a fractured wrist.

I really hope that none of the above sounds patronising - that isn't my intention at all - but I do know what it is like and, in common with other bloggers who have already posted above, I wanted you to know that we are here with you and you are NOT alone.

Please feel free to PM me if you ever want to sound-off (Am on Facebook as Ruth Elizabeth Page - arty b&w profile photo of me trying to look like a silent film star...!)

lots of love, Roo & Jasper-dog xxxx

Chris, that was one fantastic show this morning - thanks so much to you and the team and the Arch Bish, KT, JDB and everyone else!

    Happy Birthday Bagpuss!

Hugs to Keith, your daughter, CG and anyone else who needs or wants one {{{{{{{{{ }}}}}}}}}, or maybe two... Roo, you and so many others here have so much compassion, this blog is truly a lovely place.

I'm finally feeling Christmassy after this morning - hooray! And hooray for working from home! Lying in bed, listening to the blogger's anthem, thinking of absent friends, of the excitement of the 02 show last year, our CiN day not so long ago, and all the possibilities for next year, that's what did it for me. Why is it that some years - even though Christmas tends to be around the same time - it just takes a while longer to get into the groove?? Anyway, thanks to CLP and the Arch Bish amongst others, I'm there now! And of course, there's a bit of catching up to do: family presents to wrap, make room for the big Christmas tree as well as the tiny tree... and hope that the weather thaws a tad more so everyone can get where they need or want to be.

LOVE and good wishes to everyone

PS Bingo Star's Winter Driving Tip Of The Day:

If yer only 'ave third party or fire & theft car insurance!!!!!!
My advice... Well in severe weather like this yer chances of being in a road accidentation increase dramatically!!!!!!!!!!
Yer may be a great driver, but it's other's yer need ter watch out for!!!!!

Yer could get a car slide inter yer out of a side road.... yer could go around a bend & find a car sliding terwards yer!!!!!
Or even come out in the morning ter find yer pride & joy 'as been 'it by a 'it & run idiot!!!!!!!!

So why not if yer can't afford or simply don't wanter 'ave fully comprehensive car insurance... upgrade to it just while the winter weather is severe!!!!!!!!

It can cost upto 500 pound a year more!!!!!!

But for a month it might only be 30 pound more... or even if yer making a special long distance Christmas trip ter relatives... upgrade just for the journey or a week!!!!!!!

It can cost as little as 5 pound a day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well worth it to protect yer pride & joy from the worst 'appening!!!!!!

'ope this 'elps & most mighty glad ter try ter 'elp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for your guidance. Xx I have been through CBT myself and am an advocate of the process. Many things from my past are now safely in little boxes locked away with a thin layer of dust covering them. ;-) I also have been diagnosed with the big C twice and at times I feel like a ticking time bomb waiting for the third strike and I am out! I still dread doctor’s appointments with a passion.

Daughter has been at work all day and it has been very busy in her high street shop! From my point of view her being busy is good for her now. I drove her in to work today and will collect her at the end of late night shopping. GP has requested counselling so with any luck she will get some professional help in the New Year, until then it is up to us.

Sezza - after a nap, I've decided against an early one (or I'll only wake up at 4.00am and not be able to resettle...) Did you do all that ironing? What a pity - I was JUST going to offer to do the fiddly shirts as well... ;-)

KeithBigUn - Thanks. Yes, it's good that your daughter was busy and had something to occupy her. I'm SO glad your GP is supportive - it makes such a difference. Mine was/is - and I can never thank her enough. But someone I used to know in the nearest city (she and her hubby moved to Oz a few years ago) had bad depression and the GP (different practice to mine, glad to say) pretty much told her to go away and stop being so daft. She was in a dreadful state the last time I saw her (think that might have been one reason why they moved).

I know what you mean about the ol' Big C. My dad and I get the same feeling whenever the time for one of mum's tests rumbles around. As for mum herself, she's fairly chilled about it these days - but says what she always dreads the most is other peoples' pity. Surprising how quick the well-meaning but inadvertent blunderers pop up with their [in loud, clear, sad voice] "Would SHE like a cup of tea?"-type sentiments once the Big C is mentioned. But - hey - getting that GP's help is the first step on the path to recovery.

Baggz - nice haul of presents you got there! The pig-keeping day sounds like lots of fun! Some of my colleagues on other sites have rare-breed pigs, which are endlessly fascinating to watch. Pigs are incredibly intelligent. Last time I went to one site, a sow and her litter of piglets had acquired a football from somewhere, hehehe...!

Jasper's guess for tomorrow's Addie-Cal is the eternal tableau of the Nativity Scene - Mary/Joe/Baby-J/adorable ruminants/suitably-scrubbed peasant-shepherds - possibly even an anachronistic Wise Man or three. Isn't it always that on the 24th? In truth, what Jasper ACTUALLY suggested might be lurking behind Deevs' all-important window was enough to have earned us a lifetime ban from all BBC blogs (and possibly an enforced "invitation" to a new years' shindig in Parkhurst). So I have vetoed his filth and sent him early to bed with no supper to "think about what he has done".

If only I could be certain that he viewed this as a punishment, and not some kind of reward. Oh dear - the perils of canine parenting in the 21st Century....

Or sometimes not being able to take a glass out of the cupboard, or carry a plate full of food from one room to another...

From December 23 through December 25, the Google homepage will display a large interactive doodle in place of the regular Google logo.

The impressive holiday doodle features 17 illustrations, designed to look like framed paintings that depict scenes of peace, joy and beauty around the world. The small pictures expand when you mouse over them, and clicking each frame links to a Google page explaining that particular scene.

There was an absolutely hilarious bit with an Irish comedian doing a monologue, consisting of a series of 'thank-you' letters to his true-love, one after the other, for each of the gifts sent on the twelve days of Christmas (partridge in a pear tree, etc). It ended with the chap desperate and whimpering, knee-deep in bird-poo with feathers and mad lords chasing leaping ladies everywhere! I'll have to go back and listen again, as I didn't hear all of it properly - one of my colleagues was pretending to be a chicken pretending to be a carol-singer in the background. Long story. WISH I was joking. The Irish fellow WAS brilliant though.

Sezza... um, yeh. Thanks for that. I'll just - oh, hang on Jasper, what was that? Sorry Sez, gotta go. Jasper seems to have accidentally opened up a portal to another world (AGAIN! Tut! Those boys of ours, eh?!), gotta sort him out, back in a few millennia....

Hang on, Jazz! Mummy's coming! No! DON'T lift your leg against that Alien Warrior.... How many TIMES do I have to tell you?!!!! ;-)

Ah. I did wonder! Can't believe the boy lost!!! We should've been his 'phone a friend! I love quizzes, me! Mind stuffed full of nonsense (I genuinely have a photographic memory - that is NOT a boast; it's a curse. Though handy in pub quizzes. Alas, having to explain that I'm NOT a 'saddo-no-mates', whilst being able to reel off every single Dr. Who companion since 1963 to the present date, despite the fact that I was born in 1974, is one of the skills that I CANNOT master). I'm RUBBISH on sport questions though... ;-)

Still a bit jet lagged. I promise a travelogue will follow soon.

    Off to bed soon.

JG - how can we lose?! Actually, I can tell you that one: we'd lose if:
    a) there was a team that was better than us;
    b) Jasper had a bottom-based "Vesuvius-moment", resulting in the lot of us being bodily flung from the pub by the other punters;
    c) We 'phoned a friend surreptitiously from the ladies' - and got Chris on the line instead of Noah...

But - hey - it's the taking part that counts, isn't it? Chris?

JG - that's BRILLIANT! Just sent it 'round a few of my friends (along with Sezzas's Frank Kelly clip). I just know that the local vicar will LOVE it. I'm not a regular churchgoer, but he's a teriffic bloke - he's got a sticker in his office that says "Jesus is coming - look busy!". My parents don't approve - but there's nothing disrespectful or offensive in it and - if, indeed, God created us all - then he also created in us the ability to laugh at genuine, inoffensive, wit.

BTW - for anyone here in South Central England - I fear it may be about to snow - Jasper has just gone inexplicably beserk - that's what happened before - and he definitely isn't desperate for the loo... uh-oh!

    Morning all

    Ho Ho Ho!

Sitting in an empty office, on my own, all by myself. Bit of work been left for me to keep me company. Nowt Christmassy in here at all - the only saving grace there is that when I come back in on New Year's Eve I won't be faced with de-decking the office with all that tinsel!

Really, truly 100% DO NOT want to be here. I think this is the first Christmas Eve I've worked for about 12 years.

Email from "the management" says they are releasing us at 1pm.

    Happy Christmas!???

Deevs, Cheer up chicken! Think of this as a few hours peace and quiet before you get home to your new fella! If you have mini-person with you for long in the next few days, you might appreciate it! I'll chuck you a choccie.......catch!

Just think how much has changed for you since this day last year and then imagine how your life will be next Christmas! I'm sure there will be tinsel and twinkly lights a plenty (even if that is because your current company have realised the benefits of giving in to Diva-dom)

Only in for a couple of hours myself so best look busy

(((xxx))) for you this morning CLP!! Well done for trying!

ahh Deevs, so the act of drinking said beverage - cheeky or not - just rearranges the letters back!!

    Better have another choccie quick!

  • Comment number 85.

    Morning Sezza and Deevs,

I'm here and also at work for a couple of hours, perhaps everyone else has finished for the year and enjoying a long lay in :)

Sezza, Chuck me a choccie please xx

There are only two of us in this office and my colleague is being made redundant today, so not a happy atmosphere :( Roll on hometime, just waiting for the boss to come in, make a little speech and then hopefully we can be out of here.

I was out for dinner last night so missed Chris, but I was shouting at the radio this morning Galway Bay - you've got to love him. I'm guessing that when his playing the songs, he is actaully preparing for the next bit on the radio and not listening to the words.

    Baggy,

I'm 42, never married (can't really see that ever happening), never divorced, never had children (and never likely too now), and never been in love!

You are happily married, have a wonderful husband, a job (ok the job front isn't great, but that will get better) and you've still got plenty of time to have children - count your blessing My Love, after all it's Christmas :) xxx

Despite my first paragrah, I am incredibly blessed and have achieved much more than I would ever have imagined or been able to had I been married and had half a dozen children ;) !!

  • Comment number 95.

    Morning all!!!

I overslept - missed all except around three seconds of Chris/Johnny banter when Jasper inadvertently smacked me around the head when snuggling up for a 'power-cuddle'. Perhaps I should have had an early night after all... Plus I always have mad dreams when I sleep too much. I was having a perfectly delicious one about Owen Wilson, when everything went nuts with backflips on an open-top London bus, an overcrowded mosh-pit, an Iranian Taliban supplier (think that might have been the news filtering through there), a cheapo-shotgun-wedding with revolting 70's outfits in a tacky office (not me and Owen, alas. Him and Chantelle Big Brother) and some collateral damage. And that was all BEFORE Jonathan Ross showed up.

I really must stop eating so much cheese.

It didn't snow here last night. I didn't feel able to tell Jasper that he was wrong on the day before Christmas - so told him he wasn't wrong; he was just "differently right"!!!

Deevs - just think of the 'brownie points' you earn for being a good girl at work. Think of all the lovely ale the pennies you are earning whilst there will buy you. x

I'm not ENTIRELY averse to Vimto - but agree that the anagram is most unfortunate. It wouldn't be my beverage of choice, though. And here's a Jasper-tip: Never - EVER - give anyone fizzy Vimto with Pimms in it. Unless you REALLY hate them.

I remember the old ad. for Vimto with the fabulous Derek Griffiths in it. He sang a song called "Vimto's Gonna Get You in the End" - hmmmnnn.... true in more than one way, I suspect...

Chris didn't sound very happy at all this morning (from what I did hear) - I suspect a combination of tiredness (hope he's not overdoing things) and Galway-Bay-shame. ZenB and Lyn have been enjoying many a derisive snort at his expense this morning, hehehee...!

Hope you all have a good day!
