When Will We Learn?

Chris Evans | 12:56 UK time, Tuesday, 29 June 2010

In children's terms, it's like promising them all they've ever wanted for Christmas, and then not buying them anything at all, and wondering why they might be ever such a bit upset.

Of course I'm talking about international football. We simply are not very good at it, and why on earth we put ourselves up for such a massive fall every couple of years or so, totally escapes me. I am as guilty as everyone else - don't get me wrong, but this World Cup has really knocked the stuffing out of me.

In Gerrard, Lampard and Rooney (even Ashley Cole) I thought we had absolute world beaters, but this is clearly not true. It's impossible for all three of them to have played so poorly at the same time. There must be something more fundamentally wrong with how we set things up, and go about our football business at a national level.

The cricket team has beaten Australia three times in ten days. Our rugby team has also beaten them on their own stomping ground within the last fortnight. Our cyclists have been magnificent recently, as have our boxers and our golfers. Andy Murray is happy to take on the world, and of course our F1 guys have continuously been amongst their elite.

Nobody wants to have a headache, no one chooses to feel sick - so in four years from now, if we ever make the footy finals again - I am going to treat our team like New Zealand. I'll cheer every solitary point like it's a miracle and cause for a National Holiday, which by then it well might be...

Chris: how I understand everything you are saying re: your football team. This comes from someone who TRULY believed Scotland would win the World Cup in 1978! The disappointment is so crushing that eventually I just had to give up hoping that "we" could amount to something! This terrible disappointment will pass, and in spite of ourselves, four years from now if any British team qualifies, we will still think "well, it COULD happen"!

Incentally, Chris, MwK and I did buy our English flags in Leeds and we wore them with pride ... I hope we didn't jinx things!

    Love, Chrissie xx

    Wise words !!!!
But then without the world cup, we wouldnt have got to see you on ITV the other night. Very amusing.

    Incidentally, even!

    Hi Chrissie and bloggers.

I don't think they have the belief to go very far and to be honest they all appear to me to be over paid prima donnas - sorry footie fans but not one of them can play for more than 2 hours unlike some tennis players who do it day in day out at times whatever their nationality.

Fi any day for me plus cricket & rugby.

#4. Well said Susan. I don't know much about football at all and I didn't watch any of the games but from what I heard, the media believed in the team more than the team believed in themselves - now that's no good for a kick off.

I totally agree Susan! they don't have the hunger. The 1966 players did not earn anything near the crazy amounts that modern players earn, relatively speaking. I remember Jack Charlton saying that he was outside cleaning his car the Sunday after they got back.

    Mcw x

  • Comment number 7.

Oops meant F1 and I know they get paid lots but can't help but love that sport, sorry but at least they are competitive and as Mcw nicely put it have the hunger to win.

    Bingo Star 'ere...

CLP - Sadly we will never learn... that is the problem!!!!!

  • Comment number 9.

Talking of F1, I had my marshals pack through over the weekend - quite excited!! I'll be on the startline, getting totally deafened. Vuvuzelas are nothing compared to a grid full of F1 cars...

Festival of Speed this weekend though. That's gonna be goooooooood.

  • Comment number 10.

Chris, I couldn't agree more - As adults we are used to the England Football Team loosing, but it's the little kids I feel sorry for, who's heart breaks and tears flow everytime they get knocked out. Still at least they might see England lifting the World Cup in their life time, for me I'm not so sure and I'm only 41!!

Playing for your country should be a privilidge not a chore!

    Hi everyone:

    Hope all is well.

Just have to say a few words re: the Leeds Meet - which was terrific. MwK, AnnieG and I arrived to find the rest of the bloggers looking like they had been holidaying in Barbados for a month! The sun was scorching! Everyone looked so healthy, and, I am glad to say we all managed to make sure we had plenty of liquids throughout the day. Well, you simply must!

Thank you so much to PiP, AF and Scoobs for all the organisation, and thank you to Daisy for the goodie bag, which I loved.

Just great to meet so many lovely people - old friends and now, hopefully, new friends. And all thanks to the wonderful Chris Evans!

    C xx

P.S. Crumpy, yes, Mary and I did buy rather a lot of wine, but we were shopping early for Christmas gifts ... you didn't think all that wine was for us, surely?!

  • Comment number 12.

I didn't really watch any of the games and football is not by bag but do feel that the media over hyped the football team but am not sure that is an excuse for what by all accounts was a lacklustre tournament - that can only be down to the players.

Chrissie - as if anyone would think that! Glad you had a good time with new and old friends in Leeds.

Big black clouds are descending upon Cambridgeshire as I type - noooooo go away and bring back the sunshine :)

    Back again...

Auntie Sandy - Thanks for your kind words yesterday about the Hyde Park gig!!!!

Just wanted to say while am on.... it looks like we are slipping into the double dip recession!!!!!
    I'm 70 to 80% sure now!!!!!

a remember a few months ago it looked like we were managing to pull out of recession & things were begining to look quiet strong particular with the american economy!!!!
But now most of the financial data from around the world is starting to slip back into the negative!!!
All pointing to the feared double dip recession!!!!

And lets face it... take a step back from it all & yer can see how in debt our country is & Europe so, so on the edge of going bust!!!!
House prices should have come down to more affordable levels in the recent recession but they are still way overinflated compared to average incomes!!!!!

We need a really big recession to cleanse the economy and get eveything back into line.... like house prices being affordable!!!!

Recently I was in London & noticed some new appartments opposite the hotel where I was staying with 'for sale' signs!!!!
I thought wouldn't it be interesting to live here close to the city!!!
Now the appartments were not anything flash... just yer one or two bed small flats with a balcony ter admire the view & noise of the London traffic... and the traffic wardens....
I decided to look up the price on the net........ 850k for a small two bed flat!!!!!!!!!!!

Now to me that is madness!!!!!
The numbers just don't add up!!!!!!

Even if you've got a really well paid job in the city... there's something not righ tif you have such an outrageously well paid job yet can only get a small flat for 850k!!!!!!!!

All this tells me..... something has got to give soon because lets face it... when we first invented money... going back hunderds/ thousands of years.... money now... it's sort of gone out of control with reality!!!!!!!

Just thought i'd share me thoughts with all!!!!!!

Am off for a banana ter calm me nerves!!!!!

PS Talkin' of 'double dip'... reminds me of the time when a was 6 at Blackpool.... A did the 'double dip' there.... just the outcome of my 'double dip' was less severe than that of professional bankers/ politicians!!!!!!

    Bye!

  • Comment number 15.

Bingo - we were never out of the recession, just politicians trying to paint a rosier picture!

As for double dips - I remember the sweets (not sure right description) of the same name :)

  • Comment number 19.

The pool is so welcome Seza, albeit heated, and the jacuzzi is 39c!!!

I come out of there looking like a beefsteak tomato.

We've been all around the New Forest today, lots of new born foals to be seen.

You need a nice long cold drink now. I can recommend one in particular, helps with dehydration too ;)

We are having a takeaway tonight, just reading some reviews tho' and am almost put off!

Slurp o clock now I reckon.

  • Comment number 20.

Seza, I've got to cook a cottage pie for dinner, think that's a bad idea in this heat!

MTF, sounds like your having a fantastic time, hope your takeaway is ok.

Back to the kitchen for me.

    lol, csn. xx

    Thanks Csn.

Trouble is, now we have come back and unwound, no-one fancies moving again.

It may well be, just some smoked brie, chunky Bramley apple chutney and freshly baked rolls!

Yes, we had great expectations for our football team... I believe there is nothing wrong with that... but when opportunities don’t come to fruition we need to move on and realise – to quote a literary heroine of mine – tomorrow is another day – ergo – learn yesterdays lesson and move on...

I’m back from France – had a wonderful family time – and still smiling... :)

Leeds meet looked like great fun – glad you all had a lovely time...

Chrissie got in before me - I was going to tell you about their English flags and cheering on the team. So nice, when a lot of Scots were doing exactly the opposite. And, I second her thanks to all who organised the Leeds meet - was a lovely day on Saturday.

  • Comment number 25.

I'm ashamed to say when we worked out our sweepstake at work we took out N Korea and New Zealand, as there were not enough people involved. Now whilst they were never going to win it, both teams played with such spirit and passion they were a joy to watch! I will never forget the way N Korea set about Brazil in the initial stages of that match!

MTF - glad you're having a great time, hope the weather holds for you, but if it doesn't I can recommend Beaulieu Motor Museum (not just for petrol-heads, it's fascinating), and most of it is under cover!

Annie, Mary and Chrissie, lovely to see you on Saturday, and glad to see you're all home safely x

I don't think I was infectious last weekend as didn't have the rotten bits just the stabbing pains. Now I can't see him so tat will have to come off.

Hope all of you are ok and if not, sorry xx

Ooooh Susan, poor you, I hope that you dont suffer too badly.xx

JG, yes Beaulieu is planned for tomorrow. I am parting company with the boys and walking down to Bucklers Hard. hoping to take in some wildlife on the way.

We did Beaulieu a few years ago, so I am more than happy to break free and enjoy some 'me' time!!

We have just got back from the pub ( last minute decision )

Me and Mr Mobs had the tuesday special, fresh battered cod and chips, followed by a light lemon sponge. Bit of a bargain at 7.95 per head. Mr Mobs ate half of mine too.

Master Mobs however, had the house special ribs ( 5p change from a tenner)with side orders of chips, garlic bread and prawn crackers, oh and the triple choc gateau to follow!!!

He has come home and is going to hit the Baileys ice cream, because the pub didn't have any.

So, his meal cost twice what mine and Mr Mobs came to and he is still heading for the freezer.

Not a spare ounce on him either.

    Life is so unfair.

In the meantime, I will keep on walking, even, if not to put another ounce on.

I eat like a sparrow, ask Bids!

We watched Alice in Wonderland last night, I liked it.

We have Oliver to view tonight... Did anyone see the interview with Ron Moody on one of the breakfast shows this morning?

    How wrong was their researcher??

"Now then Ron, we hear you were approached about playing James Bond"

He got quite shirty about it! he's doing well for 86, funny to think he played Fagin at 36!

Right, getting ready now for swim number 4 of the day.

Must have notched up a mile today.

Its putting the soggy costume back on that proves a challenge!

    Right, I'm going in....

    Glug glug, everyone.

  • Comment number 38.

Ooo MTF, that's a long gap! lol

Enjoy your swim! Maybe you should have invested in a few more cossies - there is truly nothing worse that trying to get into a soggy one!!

I'll have to ask you about this cottage, and their available doggy facilities or not - I can see Finlay spending a week in the kennels whilst we pig out and swim all week!

No doggies JG as far as I can see. (sorry Finlay.x)

We have ten strides from our garden door to the very hot indoor pool.

I have never known luxury like it, but hey, I work hard enough to feel like I deserve a bit of it, if only once in a blue moon.

I've always believed in the old adage "Buy cheap, buy twice".

  • Comment number 49.

    I'm still here, seething!

Mr JG decided to attempt to get his draft best man speech from the back up hard drive (after the lap-top dropping debacle!) whilst I was in Leeds!

What he failed to mention was that he'd left it by his chair, kicked it over earlier and tipped cider all over it as well....and then calmly went to bed and left it on the floor for me to put it somewhere safe.....

I am seething too much to go to bed, as he knows that disk contains everything, and the stuff I retrieved from my lappy he dropped!

Now you know why I upload so many pics to FB, at least they are Mr JG proof!!

    2) I hate the fact that i;m made to feel guilty about only working 45-50 hours a week because the workds not getting done on time.

3)I hate the fact that my sister uses me as a scapegoat for all that is bad in her life and I let her do that for so long becuase I love her

    Morning everyone

Sorry for absence, been a tad on the busy side and also, to be honest, have felt a bit out of the blog loop of late.

Anyhooo, the sun is high in the sky and I've got the office to myself for a few hours, coffee cup full and work to do. So all's good really!

ChezNic news: we've booked a holiday! Nothing too fancy-pants - a nice cottage in the Cotswolds in a few weeks' time, and we're both really looking forward to it. It's been a year of transition (all good) but a rest is called for after the stresses of starting a new life, settling in to a routine together and finding employment, friends and acceptance.

MTF - I'm hoping for a trip to the Cider Museum in Hereford!!

Also, I got home last night and there was a letter from my solicitor telling me that my Decree Nisi is being read in Court on 12th July, so technically it could all be finalised by the end of August. I'm happy that it's happened so quick and without any mud-slinging of churlishness from either of us. We remain on good, civil terms which is what we both wanted back in January (which, incidentally, seems like a lifetime ago!)

Quiz night last night and we won! Huzzah!!! Great prize of "a gallon of beer" - raffle tickets to redeem at the bar on future quiz nights. How cool is that!?!?

My ranty pants things aren't as deep as Baggy's but ......

WHY don't people indicate at roundabouts/junctions/supermarket car parking spaces - I am NOT psychic, I cannot read where you're turning and do not glare at me when I almost run into you because of YOUR ineptitude.

WHY, on a Friday night after work or a Saturday afternoon, do you think the supermarket aisles are the equivalent of a social club? If you insist on standing in a group of 4 and chatting amongst yourselves, can you please not do it near the most popular items everybody wants to get to. Better still .... go find a coffee shop or a pub and catch up with your news out of my way!!!

    And finally ....

Pubs, WHY do you think it OK to charge me over a fiver for a large glass of wine when I can see plainly with my own eyes that the bottle from which you pour can be purchased for that in ELH!?!?! We weren't born yesterday y'know!!

    That'll do. For now!

    Love and stuff

    Morning all

Can i save my go with the ranty pants for another day please?

Is really too nice here today and I have the year 6 French Fashion Show - oo la la!!- to look forword to this afternoon. Who could be ranty with that in store!

Baggy, more hugs to you. I hope you can sort something out with your job soon, it sounds like it is making you so unhappy. :-(

Deevs, Well done on the quiz and it does sound like the "change" part of your life is coming to a conclusion. Here's to the next, exciting chapter!

I, tooo, haven't felt "into" the blog recently. Part of that is it's too darn hot to use the laptop but also just the feeling of what's missing.

I think of you all, often though

Enjoy this day, especially if it gives you the chance for one of those really good rants that gets it all off your chest!

Seza, Sending you a {{}} just because I can xx Did you see my message on FB about Monday?

    Morning Baggy and MTF xx

I'd just like to don the Ranty Pants for a mo. Chris and Mark were talking about National Anthems this morning and that's what really gets up my nose is the fact that our footballers don't sing it (apart from a couple of them). I don't care if they can't sing, no one is worried about that; we just want to see them with passion in their hearts, fire in the belly and them singing their little hearts out.

Who has never been moved by the Welsh Rugby Players singing their anthem. They sing it with so much passion that some of them are even crying. Our footballers could learn a thing or two from our rugby players.

OK rant over. Back to work. It's right lovely here in Kent, I walked to work this morning was a bit hot and sweaty when I got here but have cooled down now.

    Happy Hump Day Everyone.

    Am working really - promise!

Ali, aww thanks. and yes I did, is fine with me.

Deevs, That's because your first home is now so wonderful you don't need another one to escape to!!

And that's it for the sentimentality today - at least until I meet my friends this afternoon and we start talking about our babies leaving school in a few weeks!

    Deev,

I was only leading, not quite up to preaching standards yet - but it went OK. People said they enjoyed in and personally I felt it went a bit better than the last time I did it, it seemed to flow better. Don't have to do it again until November - so result!

Ali - this is a personal question so don't answer if you don't want to but I;m curious - what denomination is your church?

  • Comment number 68.

Baggy, No problem in answering. It's a United Reformed Church.

Ali - your denomination is one I hate to say I know nothing about - maybe when we meet up we can talk about it??

    Sounds like a plan xx

Ali I went to youth club in a URC even though i had gone to a CofE school as a littleun.
We were then married and had the kids christened in that same church. Shame the land is now a block of flats!! We had a fabulous humanist/Christian minister who could have been an actor - welsh, old and what a sermon/story teller. A wonderful time in my life.

    Just popping in briefly

    Morning

Susan - sorry to hear about the shingles, hope you get better soon.

Baggy - you're the only one allowing yourself to feel gulity, just do what you can and when and be happy :)

Seza - ooo la la indeed, enjoy the show!

    Diva - hi

Ali - soooo agree with you, if they can't sing the National Anthem then they shouldn't play for England imho, it really does annoy me.

Boss not here today but seem to have a pile of work to do and going down very slowly!

Saying that have just applied for 2 new jobs in the West Midlands for when I move - not sure what will come from them but doesn't cost anything to apply :)

Ok, now I'll have the ranty pants for a mo

My printer, that has been steadfastly refusing to print anything this morning, has now decided to print out everything I have tried all in one go

So now I have heaps of copies of things that I don't need!

    Aaaaggghhhh!

Whatever happened to the paperless office??

    Seza xx

Ps There's a song on R2 at right now and there's a line in it "Your kiss was only the start of it!" Does that make anyone else think of Jim'll Fix It everytime they hear it or is it only me?

Your letter was only the start of it, lalalala......

  • Comment number 74.

Susan, It's good to know that you have happy memories of church, so many people nowadays only associate bad things with it. Sorry to hear that you are poorly, wishing you a speedy recovery xxx

AS - good luck with the job search. I found it a culture shock compared to Stanglia - much more industrial, and too many motorways!! Got there in the end tho, as I am sure you will.

When are you moving ooop 'ere? We'll have to sort something out and meet up for a cheeky shandy or sumfin!

    Hi Everyone,

Will keep this short and sweet as I have a feeling NEW BLOG may be shouted shortly.

Deevs, Seza took the words out of my mouth - your 1st home is so happy and fulfilling you don't need a 2nd home so much now. I do hope you keep in touch tho'. I love hearing about Cheznicia. Hope you enjoy your hols in the Cotswolds.

AS, good luck with the job applications.

Seza, give the printer a kick, that'll sort it out. Hope you enjoy ze French Fashion show. oooh la la indeed (and you Deevs, you cheeky wee monkey).

The one thing I'd like to have the ranty pants for is along a similar line to Deevs' parking / indicating rant. Why is it when I pull up at the space I want to park in and pop on my indicator to let the person behind know my intention, they sit and wait when there is ample space for them to drive round me. I am then undecided as to whether I should carry on and reverse into the space or wait 'til the penny drops and they move on. I always reverse in to a space as I find it easier (and safer) than reversing out so I pull up at the space and indicate so the person behind me isn't unnecessarily held up.

I'm sure there are other ranty things but can't think of any at the mo.

Baggy - thinking about you my lovely and hoping work gets easier soonly.

So much for making this quick. If someone has shouted NEW BLOG, I'm going to copy and paste - you're not getting off that easily!!!

Hi just putting my penny'th in. I loved this blog and it took me 2 years to actually commit to blogging instead of just lurking I thought it was so scarry...

Anyway what actually prompted me was our Beez i felt a connection with her, although she never knew it, maybe it was to do with our ages, but she always managed to get everything so spot on with her take on life and humour. I loved the connection between B-Mum and the Diva the two of them were such a wonderful double act.

To say I was becoming obsessed with the blog might be a slight exageration, but I had to have my daily fix no matter what was happening at home or work etc.

I was fortunate to meet our Beez although very briefly and being a kinda shy person did not have a full on conversation with her as i would have liked but i guess i thought i would have all the time in the world and would do this at another blog meet....huh if only we could have known. Deevs i have admired you from afar and at least i did manage to tell you that i thought how you and Nick got together was wonderful and still do obviously. I think your lack of participation on here is due to that fact that you are happy and have other things to do. But i also think it is because you have lost your friend, your partner in crime.

So what i'm trying to say is, i have had to let this blog go for a while. I come and go, it doesnt matter to me now if i miss a few days of reading. Something will spur me on to comment like today but i will probably not come back on here now for a few days, as long as i can just read Christoph's daily take on life.

Well, thats it really...think i just needed to get that off my chest that i am missing Jane and this isnt the same for me anymore.
Will love and leave you...just for a while.
    Love Loli x

  • Comment number 80.

Loli - thanks for your message

Missing Beez doesnt come close to how I feel - I think we all have a hole in our lives at the moment.

    Afternoon,

Wow, another sunny hot day here in Ches of the shire.
Deevs, i meant to add that I miss Nic posting on here too !

Baggy , sorry to hear you are still overwhelmed with tasks, wish i could help . Is there anything i could do via email for you ? Graphs. reports etc etc , please get in touch if so . x

Right , ranty pants, those people that walk out of a supermarket and stop in the doorway to chat, and then wonder why you nearly knocked their legs off. GRrrrr

Got to dash , MC xxx

  • Comment number 82.

Hello Loli, nice to see you back and you know you'll always be welcome whenever you decide to drop by. What happend with Beez has hit everyone really hard. I haven't been blogging all that long so only managed to have a chat with Beez on a couple of occasions and I felt very honoured. Despite not knowing her very well, I was stunned when Deevs broke the news and have to say I found it difficult to log in for ages afterwards. I think things are slowly starting to get back to normal although it has been very quiet on here of late. No-one can fill her shoes (not only because she wore killer heels) so we'll just have to get a wiggle on and keep on smiling; I'm sure it's the advice dear old Beez would give.

    Hello (briefly),

Wise words from Lady Olivia. Like you I come and go and accepted long ago that I would never have the time or dare I say it the inclination to be on here all the time. But I love popping in now and then and almost always get a warm welcome from whoever's around. I think it has been said in the past the blog is all things to all people. And long may that last.

I also miss Beezer's blog presence.

Now then, this isn't a rant, just a mention. I love the Breakfast Show, the bits I get to hear, and I am also thoroughly enjoying Simon's Drivetime. The confessions bit is my favourite! Anyway, I thought nothing was missing. And then, at some point in last night's show, I thought (mistakenly) that I heard the opening bars of "Willo the Wisp", and I realised that Chris doesn't do those kiddy themes like he used to. I knew there was a tiny hole in it all. I miss it! Bring back Willow the Wisp!

I don't generally hug people I've never met, but can I just offer a hearty slap on the back and tweak of the chin to any who need it today.

Baggy, you can have a jollying punch on the arm as well.

Loli, I don't know what to say to that. Your post has made me go all fluffy, in a good way!

If I comment in enough places do you reckon I could get a song played on air lol.

  • Comment number 87.

Baggy and BG - take a smile, a wink and a shy wee raising of the shoulders (does that constitute a shrug?) from someone who doesn't do hugs either.

Hello lovely people - how are you all?

I think of you all often, don't get the time top pop in much anymore. Not totally a bad thing I know.

Work is pretty full on, I'm loving it here and the people I work with are brill. Love the fact that I'm more confident. In most things anyway.

Home is tougher than ever, have been in the spare room for two weeks and actually quite like it in there.

Anyways, have skimmed through quickly, Baggy, hope that you feel better for ranting...it's much needed sometimes.

Deevs, will email you later, thanks for the message, don't worry I'll be fine :O/

    Love,

ps: Missing Beez, now and then read a message to me saying 'onwards and upwards, smiling' It helps you know :o)

Lovely sunny day in Fife again. Visited 5yr old and baby brother, then went and did a half-hours work - it's a hard life.

Susan, hope the shingles are getting better.

In Leeds, we raised a glass or two to our lovely Beez, think a lot of people are missing her.

    Afternoon All You Lovely People,

Looks like you all had fun at the Leeds gathering. The weather looked glorious in the photos as did all thoses that went.

Yep- I think the hot weather has affected the blog and it does 'feel' different without Beez and her stories from the shed! Am glad to 'see' you back Deevs, it must be difficult to sneak onto the blog during the day when you are settling into a new job, or in your case 2 jobs!

Murray needs to play much more consistently than he is at the moment, the French guy has a much 'crisper' game and Murray is wasting valuable points. we shall see if he gets any further!
