There Are Only A Few Things In Life That Really Matter.

Chris Evans | 11:11 UK time, Monday, 15 February 2010

This is a blog dedicated to anyone who spends their working day fixing other people - like they did for my cousin Thom this weekend.

Thom was injured in a horrifying episode on Saturday playing rugby for Scotland. In short, he broke his neck and they saved his life. Not only that but the expertise with which he was carried from the field, transported to the hospital and then operated on and cared for means he should make a full recovery. Something quite miraculous, if you could have seen the extent of the devastation sustained by the top of his spine.

Thom and his family have always known the risks involved in such a physical sport but nothing can prepare you for such an incident. They have been as strong for him as is humanly possible over the last 48 hours - as of course they will continue to be - and all things considered - the future looks comparatively bright.

My thoughts go out to the players involved in the tackle, and I know Thom would want them to feel no responsibility whatsoever for his accident. It was simply "one of those things" that unfortunately sometimes happens in the marvellous sport of rugby.

As I said this morning - onwards and upwards from here - it's the only way.

Xxx.

    Morning Chris

So pleased that Thom is going to make a full recovery. The emergency services are fabulous.

My son plays rugby and spend the whole game with my fingers crossed that all the players don't get injured.

So pleased to hear that he is doing well. My 11 year old son and I were watching the match and were so worried about Thom. My son ran into my bedroom this morning, having done his daily sports news check, telling me that Thom was going to be OK. Heres wishing him a speedy recovery.

    Hi Chris

I echo your sentiments entirely. Although I did not see the incident, I heard your description this morning and I am sure you are thankful that the medics on the spot knew exactly what to do and more importantly what not to do.

Baggy - from the previous blog, I was going to write something similar to Clodagh, as usual she has put it far more eloquently than I can manage. Life is too short to beat yourself up over a couple of pounds.

    Happy Monday everybody else.

    Morning All,

Life is precious no matter what you do,treat each day as if it was your last, have no regrets and enjoy every moment! Corny as it sounds life really is too short so make the most of it.

No one is to blame it's just an unfortunate accident. Here's wishing Thom a speedy and full recovery.

You can't wrap yourself/kids/family in cotton wool. I have three men in my life who all play rugby with a passion, it's what they love and you have to let them do it! Only downside is THE WASHING!!!!

    Morning Chris

Good news that Thom is on the up - let's hope he has a speedy and full recovery as befits a lad of his youth and level of all-round fitness. In the meantime, thoughts to his immediate and extended fmaily who must have been going through hell over the last 45 or so hours.

As for the attending medical staff and crews - amazing people. Having been to the MotoGP at Donnington Park for the last goodness knows how many years, the speed and proficiency with which the track-side medics reacts is second to none. There's nothing worse than seeing a rider, post-crash, laying in the kitty litter.

Baggy - what's 5lbs between friends? And yet again Clodagh, spot on! My weight fluctates but I've found the secret: everything in moderation, moderate exercise and most importantly, self-belief and happiness. Based on this, I've shed over 2 stone since January 2009 - without paying a penny to any "Fat Fighters" clubs - just follow the above and weigh myself once a week.

And I know I will NEVER be 9 stone - and that if I was, I'd look ridiculous!

Had a good morning so far: a couple of calls about jobs, a bit of pottering, a bit of Domestic Engineering (dishwasher and washing machine!). Tonight's tea is marinating: lamb shanks in red wine with garlic and rosemary.

    Back later.

    Morning all, hope you're well?

Chris, I'm glad he's well and yes, the emergency services (esp on the medical side) are amazing. I have seen them at work and to call them angels is an understatement.

Bingo, hope you're feeling better this morning, I think you've got it off your chest now and would be a good time to end the ranting. However this an open forum and you are free to type away whatever. Just think about it first buddy. Cream rising to the top and all that.

Thanks again for all the birthday wishes, had a great weekend.

    Chris,

I was the man lucky enough to be stood next to you to watch the first half at the Millennium Stadium. After the game I could see it your face that at that moment nothing else in the world mattered apart from Thom's well being.

Anyway just delighted to hear he is on his way to a full recovery. Rugby can be a brutal sport at times especially at international level and Thom was just very unlucky in a contact situation. He gave 100% and unfortunately that means putting your body on the line.

Thankfully he had the Scotland doctor James Robson at his side who has once again saved a players life on the field of play and proved him self as the best of the best.

Best wishes to yourself, Thom and his family.

    Morning Chris,

What happened to Thom acts as a stark reminder to how hard those guys go out and play for our entertainment week in - week out.
It's great that he is expected to make a full recovery.

I'm organising some fund raising at our club for a 17 year old called Max Levene who broke his neck playing rugby recently and sadly won't make a full recovery. If anyone wants to make a donation to help him buy the equipment he now needs, just type his name into Google.
He has nothing to do with our club but as you said Chris, rugby does seem to be a sport which still has a sense of community.

Nice comments about Thom's feeling towards the others involved, I'm sure they will be glad to hear those words.

Glad to hear that Thom's on the road to recovery - what's the betting his first question was `when can I start playing again?'. It's been a pretty sobering weekend all round sport-wise, what with Thom's injury and the poor guy involved in the luge accident on Friday (which left me feeling pretty angry if I'm honest and not just because of how it happened. Still that's not for here), but as BLYipE said, if it's what they love, they have to do it.

Deevs - congratulations on the weight loss, but be warned that you're coming up against the greatest enemy that healthy living can ever face - domestic bliss!

  • Comment number 13.

    Hi Chris,

Have complete respect for everyone in the medical profession. They are all heroes. Last week my daughters friend was involved in an horrific car crash. She had life threatening injuries, and after 2 major operations(one was over 9 hours),it looks like she'll, hopefully, make a full recovery. My Dad was rushed in with a burst ulcer, the whole family were called in as it looked pretty grim for him, but a young Kiwi surgeon saved him after 30 units of blood and hours of surgery. These health professionals face such cases, day in and day out, and many get paid a pittance. Shocking! ....Rant over!
Glad the news is good for Thom, Chris.

Really enjoyed the show today, not sure the neighbours enjoyed my rendition of "When Smokie Sings"!

    Chris

I was at the game on Saturday and you could tell from the length of time he was being treated on the pitch that it was serious, but just how serious we did not find out until later.

I, like everyone else, got caught up in the excitement of the last 10 minutes and for a while it was the most important thing in my life, but when the news of how badly Thom Evans was injured came out I realised that it is only a game and there are more importent things in life.

Full marks to the crowd for the patience and respect that they showed during the hold up and of course to the medical staff without whose expertise this story would have a very different ending.

Hope he and the two other injured Scottish players make a full recovery.

PS I'd get a bit more kicking practise in if I were you.

Afternoon all. Happy Monday:) Started with heavy rain - now stopped and hopefully we may see a smidge of blue appear - ever the optimist...

Pleased to hear Thom is well on the way to recovery. Just for once I actually missed the match but like all have previously said - amazing the stuff the on the spot medics do. I would say give him a big hug but perhaps not quite yet.

Uncle C - #363 from previous blog - you are spot on - the very same car park and the smell of the Chinese food pervades the whole car park still - luckily not the large department store we frequented and spent a flippin fortune !! Ended up back at the "car park for minis only" looking like contestants on crackerjack.

JG - Car one of those stoopid pedestrian friendly ones so it "crumpled" - one almighty wallop with a rubber hammer put all back as it was, plus a bit of elbow grease and t-cut. Good as new!

Pip and MTF sorry about the neck problems - UCarl, I did the drinking bit Saturday night and it did numb the pain for a while !!! If I wasn't going out today would continue with that therapy.

    Hey Chris!

Hope Thom gets better asap :)

Having been first on scene at two different incidents in 2009, I know what an amazing job the Emergency services do. They have to deal with so much rubbish for one or another reason.

So good effort and high five to those doctors, nurses, paramedics and other peeps who took care of Thom! YOU ROCK!

And to those who do the above jobs but didn't care for Thom you do awesome too! YOU ROCK AS WELL

So glad to hear Thom is on the way to recovery, it just goes to show you how easily we break sometimes.

And on that note, I hope all of you bloggers PLEASE GIVE BLOOD, those of you who can anyway, OH and I should be giving today but both have the cold so will wait a couple of weeks, it's such a worthwhile thing to do, costs nothing but half an hour of your time and you even get a cup of tea and a biscuit!

    Morning Chris

Watching the game on Saturday you could tell the Scottish sqaud were giving their all - and when Thom went down and didn't get back up it was terrifying. Thank goodness he was surrounded by people who knew exactly what needed to be done - and I'm so so pleased he is going to make a full recovery. These guys really do give their all out there.

I will be off to see Thom's home team (and Max's), Glasgow Warriors, on Friday and I know the crowd will all be wishing him a speedy recovery.

Like you Rips, we have a young lad in the Glasgow area who was aged 16 (Craig Pryce) when he had an accident last year playing school rugby and is paralysed from the neck down - unbelievable. But there has been much fund raising for him and whilst this does nothing to give him or his family back his full life it does at least let them know people care and hopefully gives some extra comfort when needed.

Rather strange and obviously meant that you were there Chris on Saturday - as I'm sure you were the perfect family member to do and say just the right things.

I was so sorry to hear about Thom and thoughts were with you. So glad to hear that he is making a good recovery.

Unfortunately, first hand experience of this one - good friend of mine played rugby for his university. In a game one Saturday, a player deliberately collapsed the scrum. My friend was hooker and his neck was broken. Quadriplegic for the last 30 years. he has coped - got his degree, has a career, drives an adapted car but will need constant support and care. So so sad.

ps Gail, I agree completely - there is no excuse for not giving blood. Well, unless you've had a heart attack. Or they can't find your veins. Or you are HIV positive. But they're not excuses, they're reasons. Just my twopenn'rth (or however that's spelt!).

I really don't mean to be unsympathetic Bingo as you are obviously going through a difficult time (as we all do at various stages of our life), but I really feel the need to say enough now. I think it is a shame that you are using Chris's blog to vent your feelings which should maybe be pointed in the direction of a doctor or counsellor. I know from reading the blog over the past week how much support you have been offered from your friends on here, away from the limelight of the blog.
It is such a shame that a blog which I am sure Chris intends to be lighthearted and chatty with the feelgood factor is perhaps losing readers who are a little tired of you using it as your own personal psychiatrists couch.
Perhaps look at the title of todays blog to try and put a little perspective on things and take up the offer of all your friends who are more than happy to support you, but not on such a public forum.
I hope things improve for you.

Top tenuous link to this 'ere blog.

Many moons and several suns ago, on a lonely Friday evening, I was watching `Love At First Sight' on Sky One (don't forget these were the days before Sky Sports News, it was either this or a documentary about the origin of dental floss on BBC 2. And as for the loneliness, my usual Friday night out with my mate had been consigned to the dustbin of history just because he'd started going out with a model. Not that I begrudged him this, it just would have been nice if he'd got one for me too. Anyway, I digress). This was Sky's attempt at a Blind Date and was hosted by one Bruno Brookes - ex partner of TV `golden girl', Anthea Turner. It just so happened that one of the contestants that night was someone from my neck of the woods who described himself as a `fashion consultant' - the following day, in an attempt to get a model of my own, I went clothes shopping and in one of the shops I visited, found said `fashion consultant' folding T-shirts to put on the shelves....

BTW - I should apologise for this piece of pointlessly random drivel. I'm just keeping a promise I made....

Any road up, just remembered what I wanted to add.

Thom's worrying injury has me reminded of the time the then fiance 'ad 'is cheekbone broken during a hard-fought cup-tie. Badly concussed on top of his injury, for a while there, we didn't know if he was going to lose the sight of his eye. It was a nasty shock, for sure; and it happened the week before he was due to join training with the England squad. Obviously, I was in the dressing-room with him in his sorry state as various medics sorted him out, and just before they put him in the ambulance, I raced over to update my nearest and dearest with what was happening. But before I could get any words out, having been strong and brave in the face of this catastrophe, I burst into tears. Whereupon the then club president scooped me up in a big bear-hug, and said, "Oh, sweet'eart, don't be gettin' upset... we won!!!"

    Priorities, see.

many moons ago - to earn some extra cash I used to iron for a couple - very nice people - wonder what happened to them - their postoffice is now a house - anyway I digress, I can do shirts, t-shirts etc properly and I fold them correctly when ironed, and then mr bp doesnt touch them for what feels like weeks so his stuff sits in the living room like wwe live in a laundry!

Clodagh - may I apologise on behalf of my liver, kidneys and other vital organs (both internal and external)for the T-shirt incident. I'm glad you managed to convince the shopkeep of you non-OCD status, although I'm surprised he believed you given one of the T-shirts you tried to `sort out' was the one he was wearing at the time....

Just before I take out the little Jack Russell to air his trousers...

A man was quite unhappy because he had lost his favourite hat. Instead of buying a new one, he decided that he would go to church and steal one out of the vestibule.
When he had got there, an usher intercepted him at the door and took him to a pew where he had to sit and listen to the entire sermon on "The Ten Commandments".
After church, the man met the preacher in the vestibule doorway, shook his hand vigorously, and told him "I want to thank you vicar for saving my soul today. I came to church to steal a hat and after hearing your sermon on the 10 Commandments, I decided against it."
Vicar,"You mean the Commandment, "Thou shall not steal" changed your mind?"
Man,"No, the one about Thou shall not covet thy neighbour's wife. As soon as you said that, I remembered where I had left my hat."

On that note I shall say cheerio folks!

    Hello All,

I'm so please that Thom is going to be OK Chris - hope he is feeling as comfortable as is possible.

Things I said I'd never say as a parent, ALL of which I have uttered in the last 36 hours:

    1. Because I say so
    2. Is that a skirt or a belt?
    3. You'll freeze to death in that
    4. That room is a pigsty
    5. This isn't a hotel you know.

Oh dear. But then again, I have heard the following:

    1. Why can't you be like other mums?
    2. Everyone else's mum is letting them get a taxi back from Coventry (15 miles away) at 1 in the morning.
    3. Things are different now. We're all like this.
    4. It's my room.
    5. You can't stop me.

Aaargh. I said them all at exactly the same age about exactly the same things.

Thankfully we always end up laughing. Eventually.

Now, here's a scary thing I've just found out, having just visited that chain of petshops which MWa used to (still does?) works for.

They sell live insects to feed reptiles with! You can buy boxes of crickets, mealworms and world you believe LOCUSTS! Adult ones - they're MASSIVE. What if they fall into the wrong hands? Children might use them for tricks at school, or put them in our beds??? Evil people could release them into the community and start a plague?! You have been warned.

And what's more they are selling Dog Beer for 1.99 a bottle. I ask you.

    Love the Dumbo Rats though.

Apologies if ive posted this before but its one of my faves...

A man asked his wife what she'd like for her birthday. "I'd love to
be eight again." she replied. On the morning of her birthday, he arose early, made her a nice big bowl of Coco Pops, and then took her off to the local theme park. What a day! He put her on every ride in the park: the Death Slide, the Wall of Fear, the Screaming Monster Roller Coaster, every thing there was. Five hours later she staggered out of the theme park. Her head was reeling and her stomach felt upside down. Right away, they journeyed to a McDonald's where her loving husband ordered her a Happy Meal with extra fries and a refreshing chocolate shake. Then it was off to the movies: the latest Star Wars epic, a hot dog, popcorn, all the Coke she could drink, and her favorite lolly and M&M's. What a fabulous adventure! Finally she wobbled home with her husband and collapsed into bed exhausted. He leaned over his precious wife with a big smile and lovingly asked, Well, Dear, what was it like being eight again?" Her eyes slowly opened and her expression suddenly changed. "I meant my dress size!!!!!!!

Personally i`d love the day! And have only ever been a size 8 when i was about 4....

Personally i am happy as i am, reasonably fit and with a gorgeous GM who loves me as i am..and if i put 5lb on it`d never be noticed!

As long as you are fit and healthy then a few lbs here and there dont hurt.although i do understand where you are coming from if you feel better with it off...just dont beat yourself up over it eh? You look lovely..

Baggy - was going to dig out my "old" little black dress to show someone at the week-end so they could have a laugh. That was something like an 8 or 10 when I was well and truly more a 12/14. emm and ess or expensive labels - don't you just love them.

Deev, you saying earlier 2 stone down from this time last year, - snap but more to the point - 2 dress sizes down with the stuff I bought at the week-end. yabadabadoooo.

    Afternoon CLP and gang,

Good news about Thom's recovery, and you are so right about the medical profession, really amazing and don't get the recognition they deserve! I agree with earlier posts about blood donation, it doesn't take long, doesn't hurt and you get tea and a biscuit (or a tunnosck tea cake if you're here in bonnie scotland) and you save three lives in the process!

So the second viewing... here in Scotland they operate a system of "open viewing" where people open up their houses for a couple of hours, usually on a Sunday so you can go along a view. So I checked with the solicitors handling the sale that there would be an open viewing, took a half day from work, went along... and there was nobody there! Was choked up with the cold last week and couldn't even manage a simple supermarket shop without forgetting half the things I went for in my woolly headed-ness so I decided I needed a clear head to make a final decision about wether to put in an offer, so this week it'll be all systems go again on that front. Will shout at the solicitors and make an appointment to go see it in my days off.

Hope everyone is having a good day

Sparkling Patty - I appreciate you taking the time ter write ter me!!!!!

Everytime am about ter someone writes back to me so a feel a must answer!!!!

I've been to my doctor a year ago when I was very low. Me doctor 'as known me since a was a kid & he said am very strong, stronger than most. His advice is he can give tablets to me but he doesn't think they would do me any good!!!!!
His advice keep plodding on as he thinks considering me background i'm very doing well!!!!
His advice also join a church as he told me had bad time sin his life & found & met his wife through the church!!!!
Something ave had said ter me before!!!!!

The people who need help are the people who go through life due to whatever issues they have putting others down ter build themsleves up!!!!
Like the job I was bullied out of!!!! The bloke who bullied me I could tell had personal issues!!!
Sadly there's a lot of people out there who whether through
He chain smoked... a could his hand shaking when he was smoking and he walked everywhere in a kind of fast stressed out state!!!!
And he had an anger problem the way he used ter bang his keyboard in a temper and start shouting/ wearing & always looke dso grumpy!!!!
But sadly these people go after jobs to get a position of power... then abuse it with people such as myself!!!!!
We could write forever about such things but that's the way it iz!!!

Myself being someone who does everything well, too the best of my ability & never is nasty to others!!!!!

I agree... this blog is meant to be happy... which is why I usually spend most of my time writing more humour here than anyone ever does!!!!

As for today's blog... You might notice I was one of the first people to write my concern about Thom Evans on the blog at the weekend... and I did here this morning at the start of my blog which was removed!!!!!

I know we all go through difficult times in our lives. But i'm sorry if people find it hard to understand but some of us seem to go through a never ending chain of problems.
I hope you never experience this... if you did you may understand.

From now I would like to draw a line under things!!!!!

  • Comment number 92.

Plus here's a copy of the top bit of what I wrote on the blog this morning......

CLP - VERY promising news about Thom Evans!!!!!!
I've been thinking about him over the weekend & yersen how it must have been a worrying time... but thankfully as much as it was VERY, VERY serious.... it's looking very promising!!!!!!
Thankfully it looks like Thom has been lucky & with the very advanced medical care nowadays... it's looking good!!!!!!!
We spend a lot of time rubbishing the NHS all this talk about bugs... but medicine has advanced so much... it's great what they can do nowadays!!!!!!!

Off ter the hospital meself later!!!!!
Me mum was meant ter be coming out terdee but 'er oxygen levels are not correct so they're keeping her in for more tests!!!!
They're trying ter get 'er medication correct for the degree of damage that 'er lungs have!!!!!
As much as it's a worry... I feel glad she's in the best place!!!
If she'd stayed in denial at home.... I feared her health would get a lot worse... sooner!!!

I know everyone has a right to their beliefs & there's nice people who don't beleive in god & some right hypocrites who do go to church every week... and then spend the rest of the week upsetting people... my grandad who was a vicar used to say that about some of the people who came to his church!!!!!!

I might sound a hypocrite myself as I don't go to church, but do beleive very much in god!!!!
I don't know how anyone can look at all the beauty of nature in this world & think there's nothing more to life!!!!

I find you can feel something extra in your sole!!!!!!
Sadly some people seem ter be empty & cold inside!!!!!

Something i've noticed about most of these people who go through life treating people bad, they don't beleive in god!!!!!!!
Maybe there's a connection between the two???

    A saying of mine......

'If someone thinks we are just water & chemicals, then they might treat you as if you are just water & chemicals!!!'

  • Comment number 96.

  • Comment number 98.

I personally thin k alot about things & try to find answers to what life is all about!!!!

Alot of people a think don't seen to care too much about the meaning of life... they don't think too deeply about things!!!!!

We ar eall different... and I could write forever about why we do the things we do etc!!!!!!!
Why are some people nice & some not... why do we have wars & conflicts in the world.. you could go on forever trying to find out the answers!!!!!!

I like people & always try to see the best in people... but sadly... I will always find people a mystery!!!!!!!

I really would like to draw a line under this now... but people keep writing to me & I feel I need to reply!!!!!
