Beth and I... early Saturday morning.

Chris Evans | 05:29 UK time, Saturday, 14 February 2009

Mummy Tash, that is the original...

...Girl On The Sofa, (that's how I first talked about her on this blog, when she first started staying over at mine, when nothing was going on - honest... and now look at us !) has turned on the morning milking machine and is feeding the bab his brekkie in bed. Beth, our one year old German Shep, and I on the other hand, are forming a whole new kind of relationship. We don't know what kind yet, we're still working on that but seeing as we may be spending most of the next few years together we might as well get on with it.She raising a knowing eyebrow at me at the most poignant of moments and me aimlessly stroking behind her ears from time to time in a, "it's not about you and me anymore," kind of way. Ha ha.

Mum is already dead beat, bless her, which resulted in me carrying out my first genuine, it's for real and better be right, nappy change. It's now almost an hour ago since it took place and I think we're all still ok although the swaddling wrap was not the best the world has ever seen, suffice to say had it been a chicken fajita, one might still be searching for the chicken on the floor.

A lot of extremely sage advice has been coming our way via this blog over the last week, for which we are very grateful, last night I discovered myself putting one particular aspect of it into pratcice..

"Make the most of every second, they grow up so fast, faster than you can ever imagine."

I'd been home from work for about an hour, Tash was having a break, I was sprawled on the sofa, half lying down with my knees up, Noah was on my lap and I was resting him against them with his back supported by my thighs, I was holding his hands for balance and we were checking each other out. "I wonder if he might go off to sleep," I thought to myself.
Wouldn't that mean that he was happy and we could all get on with our night ?

But then I remembered what everybody had kept saying and I suddenly hoped he wouldn't. As it turned out Noah was way ahead of me, he wanted some us time as well.

He just stared at me quietly for what must have been the best of an hour. His eyes wide open, his mouth doing things all on it's which didn't mean much but at the same time meant everything.

If he had gone to sleep for heaven's sake, what would I have done anyway ? Read the paper, watched the news... big deal, no thanks, I would take this hour every time.. Whatever I was giving him, he was repaying me in spades. His magic permeating my very being, it was he who was giving me his time, attention and energy, not the other way round.

I can't help thinking life is going to be simpler for the next few years. We have a no choice enviroment here at home now and after the years of madness I've experienced that's actually a very healthy thing. Sure we'll be tired but we've been tired before.

It's all about Noah now and then mum and then me and Beth bringing up the rear somewhere in joint third.

In fact, thinking about it, because Beth is still a pup herself and will miss out on a lot of the bits of Tash she used to have before, I think she needs a bit more love than me. So, in truth, it seems finally I am where every family man should be. I am proudly last in the pecking order and I have to say it feels bloody fantastic.

Now I'm even more jealous of the Evans family - I used to have a female german shepherd, they're the most wonderful dogs ever! So loyal and reliable. Enjoy all your days.

    Morning

Wow, what a blog. It brought tears to my eyes and made me incredibly broody.

Chris you truly have life sussed and I am not in the least bit jealous of that. You deserve it, you bring joy to the nation each evening, you've shared this incredible experience with us and I hope you will continue to share and you are an all round top bloke.

    Keep blogging.

Enjoy the card that God has dealt you my friend.

    Umm, Chris...

    Its Saturday.

Not that I'm complaining, fantastic blog. Insightful, emotive and passionate. Pretty much what one needs on valentines day, no matter who or what the object of your affections.

No need to tell you to enjoy, you have that mastered already.

The object of my affections knows his place, always has done. The pecking order goes:

    Cats
    House Rabbit
    Me
    Chickens
    Other rabbits and guineas
    Swans
    Dog
    Him
    Tortoise.

It works and we are all quite happy, especially the cats. The tortoise is last because, well she's not around for 5 months of the year.

    MW, a!

Good morning one all in blog land,

Now that was a truly heart felt blog, one many a man thinks but does not put into words. I have felt what you wrote on many an occasion but sadly never put into words the way you have. I admire that and wish you many more years feeling the way you do. I also know what you mean by the pecking order lol it's there for good Chris and as long as you can feel the way you do now, for the rest of days, you will have a fantastic life and enjoy it to the max.
As you can see from the blog MWa has just written, I am second to last and am as happy as I could be, as she shows me that life is to be shared, not only with her but with everything she holds dear.
Enjoy Valentines day, for it is about love and you have shown this and shared this with all of us here and many more.

    Chris,

What a lovely surprise to get a Saturday blog.

Thank you for sharing your special moments with us xx It fantastic to see where you are now with the girl on the sofa! :o)

You really are in a good place now Chris and reaping the well earned rewards - you deserve every single second of it!

It's just me, myself and I in my abode which is great, at times, but I would swap it without a second thought to be in that special place you are now!

Love to Noah, Tash, Beth and you xxxxxxxx

    Mary xx

ps. I will enjoy the rugby even more today knowing you will be cheering us on!

Ahh, Chris. That was so lovely you've made me cry. My second baby is due in a couple of weeks. Was feeling a bit nervous but I can't wait for it now. What a gorgeous thing to write about him giving you his time, not the other way around. So true. SOB.

    Chris

Another piece of advice - so long as the chicken doesn't actually fall out of the fajita Noah won't care it everything is perfect. It took me a lomg time to learn that one!

Wishing you many more special moments I wish I could write about mine in the way you do.

  • Comment number 10.

Trust you to give us that bit more of your time to share special moments, thanks.

As many others have said, you have to live every moment because all of a sudden Noah will be running round the house throwing things about. Except that when you say "What are you doing??" His answer will be "Looking for my passport/guitar/car keys/the rings cos the wedding's in an hour" and so on.

I have a serious birthday this year (the one kind people say "but s*^$ty is the new forty"), the first grandson is 2 years old and five hundred miles away, and I think - where did it go?!? Answer? Where you left it!

Just a final fling on the pecking order - Noah first, dog second, the rest - third. Your dog will always be 2 years old and needs you for everything (at which point Alfie Westie came over for a back scrunch and to say "Is it lunchtime yet?").

Have a great Valentine's and thanks again for the last few months - all those shows should get Sonys!

    Cheery!

Oh how you have made me laugh!!! Some lovely words there too which I am sure many men feel but never get to say.

The magical moments that you have had in the last few days will just keep on coming as he grows and changes and develops, every different stage is so special.

They really are magical little creatures. I still find it hard to believe that our three all grew inside me and we created them!!

Have a fantastic weekend, I will be enjoying a nice bottle of fizz in your pub tonight with my hubby, Can't wait!!

  • Comment number 13.

Christoff you're such a sweetheart and at this unexpected moment I'd like to reiterate everything I've previously said here re. the joy you have to come. But can I add something.

The years may pass in a flash and you may wonder where they went. But many's the time when, during my infrequent periods at home rather than rushing round Ireland like a madwoman, I spend an evening with the GD, watching rubbish on TV, enjoying a takeaway or some hitherto undiscovered pasta dish a la mum, when she snuggles down on the sofa, puts her head on my lap and says, "Mum, do a mousy for me will you?"

Now then. A mousy is what I used to do when she was a little fractious at little more in age than Noah. It involves ever-so-gently running my fingertips around her face, starting at the forehead, down her cheeks and behind her ears, gently gently. It used to mesmerise and calm her then and it does to this day. Almost 30 years later. She is now taller and much more gorgeous than me, and a Top Top Bird, a cross between Boadicaea and Penelope Pitsop. I marvel at her every single day.

So that, at least, will last a life-time. Ok, so you won't be Doin' Mousys like me when he's a strappin' 6ft.6 rugger-bugger, hahaha, but you'll find your equivalent and you'll remember this time.

It's firmly etched into your memory and that's all that matters, my friend.

And can I also add, as possibly the oldest listener on Planet Ev, that it seems like only yesterday that I first witnessed the madman that was the young Chris Evans. I warmed to him then and still do, through all the ups and downs of your career, so many things have changed and who'd have thought, in those early days, you'd be where you are today.

    Well, me, for one.

    Because Life Is What Happens....

    I wish you all well.

What a lovely, lovely blog, thanks Chris. I must second kirstiett1, I would give anything to cuddle my babies again, and have those "getting to know you" stare-out sessions. Soon they become smiles, giggles, chats, enjoy every moment.

Chez boleyn there is much tutting and eyerolling going on this morning teenwise. "This half term is going to be sooooooooo boring..." Hey ho.

Happy Valentine's Day to anyone who's interested.

These first few days will stay with you forever. As will as the 'millions' of photos that you have been taking, film Noah as well with all the members of your family. This week I have just been copying our old video footage from cassette to dvd. and it is just so lovely to see my two children's lives unfolding on film with family members who are sadly no longer with us. Brilliant for them to see and for us to remember.

    Chris, Chris, Chris.

You never cease to amaze me.

A Saturday blog, and the real Chris Evans, is standing up.

    I'm going to gloat here.

A good few years back, when you were being hounded by the press, badmouthed, and by your own admittance "acting like an idiot most of the time" (as you've stated on the show -- the dark place), I said you'd bounce back and go on to become truly one of the nation's finest entertainers.

Yes, the Big Breakfast, Toothbrush and TFI Friday, etc, but that was as 'the artist formerly known as Chris Evans'.

I was told that you were washed up, finished, nobody would touch you with a bargepole.

I said no, he'll be back, you watch. I was right.

You wound your neck in, worked hard, grew up, and thanks to Lesley Douglas giving you a chance, here you are. And, here you are sounding happier than I've known you to be, from what we, the punters, get to see from a (I hate this word) "Celebrity".

Your home life sounds blissful, you have a cracking wife, two lovely kids, and a dog that is happy to share the back of the pecking order. Plus, you have created a monster with Drivetime on Radio 2.

From fame to the 'wastelands' and back again. Like a phoenix from the flames, you old showoff :-)

You made it back, thank god.

Chris Evans........You did well my son.

    Enjoy it buddy.

Wow, what a surprise and utter privelege to hear from you on a saturday Chris.
Your blogs this week have been an absolute joy to read, your excitement infectious.
I feel we of the blog are more like surrogate parents to your little Noah, than strangers and wish the 3 of you the best of times in the future.
I personally am honoured that you would take the time and effort in keeping us up to date on what must be a very precious weekend. Thank you for this wonderful blog, long may it continue.

Ta ta , hugs and kisses,

I've never felt the compulsion to respond to a blog before, but Mr Evans you made me cry. Oh that every new father could heed your wise words and take a little time just to marvel at the very being of the person they have helped to make. Mothers, I feel, do this more naturally, and certainly I am still in awe of the person who entered my world 22 years ago, and could happily still spend time just gazing at him!

Alas, now he is an adult and I have a much more peripheral role to play in his life. So enjoy those hours, moments or seconds with the very same amazement with which you have today, for love grows stronger in those special times.

    With heartfelt best wishes

I have never done this before but am compelled to do so after reading the beautiful words written by you today. If only other people would simply enjoy their gorgeous children for what they are and see that they are indeed precious gifts to be cherished.
My own boys are big now but I often look at them and remember how precious those quiet moments with them as babies were. Oh, I could have eaten them!!!
Enjoy this time, you don't get it back again unfortunately but life with children is certainly a rollercoaster. Enjoy the ride!

Christoph, not for the first time this week I've been brought to tears whilst reading your blog. The joy and contentment you are feeling is obvious and it's lovely that you are so happy to share it with us all.

Loved the photo of you, Tash and the gorgeous Noah in the paper today. Will you do an OK/Hello spread and donate the fee to charity again?

I suspect you and Noah are going to have plenty of 'us times' which you'll both remember forever. Being told off as a child is inevitable, and although I know I got told off plenty of times, all I can honestly remember is the love and laughter in our family both as a child, and now as a big old grown up! My mum was never too busy to stop for a hug or a cuddle, and that made us feel like the luckiest kids ever. She used to say that those moments had to be enjoyed right there and then otherwise they'd be gone, and I think she was right.

    Enjoy every moment Chris.

Aww Tobes - that was lovely!

Now, can someone (Ripples maybe?) please explain .... I am watching the rugby, France vs Scotland (yay for the Evans brothers!) but why have the majority of the Scottish team got half a roll of gaffa tape round their earoles, lumps of plaster stuck to their heads etc etc. They are by no means a pretty bunch - more like extras from a Hammer Horror Fillum.

    Odd. Most odd.

Keeping me company for the duration is a bar of green and blacks organic choc with ginger. Anyone want a piece ... ?

    Next: the curry!!

I know it may be inappropriate and a bit scooby, but I can't tell you how proud I am of the Evans clan at the moment.

Dear old CLP, sharing his wonderful experience, and, as a barren woman, it's been a grand experience to see it from Dad's side (I have many experiences from mum's side with friends and family). So thank you for that.

And now, as a Scot living in England, I am so thrilled with Scotland's rugby performance. The Evans brothers have had a sterling game (so far, still on going) and Thom was SO close to a try wihtin the first micro seconds of the game. If Scotland continue to play like this throughout the tournament, and we beat England, I shall be well content.

Thank you Chris and GOTS for sharing your wonderful experience(s) with us. May the Gods bless you and your lovely, growing family. Good luck, Noah.

    Gosh, bit overwhelmed!

Just read your blog Chris how lovely to read your thoughts, you are a very modern man. My husband and I have just been for a walk we are both pensioners now I can well remember the time when we had our children, I can remember life being very hectic and maybe we didnt do what you are doing now just relaxing and taking it very easy making the most of your time with Noah. Years ago Fathers were not so hands-on glad things have changed now its a shared thing nappy changing etc. Enjoy your life you seem to be in a very calm stage of your life I must prefer this new Chris rather than the old Chris (not that I knew you) your life seemed so hectic then. The score line does not reflect the game, I feel, Deevs, grand game, we should have come out with more. However, after France's outcome last week I thought we'd get absolutely whooped today and we've not been. We can be proud of our game, our attempts, our skills and our play. Team's looking good, especially them there Evans boys! (Will Noah play for Scotland too?!!!)

Hi Tash, Chris, Noah and Beth!!

    Isn't life wonderful?

    Chris, next time you and Noah have Daddy and son time, try these;

Stick your tongue out, hold it for about 3 seconds then put it back. Watch Noah. He'll copy you.

Do the same with a pretend yawn....or big exagerrated blink....or smile....or turning your head one way or the other.....or making kisses. Give Noah the chance to imitate you.

Then try simple words. Daddy, Noah, Mummy like that. Watch him trying to form the words.

Anyone who says that tiny babies can't imitate and smile has never really looked at them and done exactly what you are doing with Noah.

And one final hint for you....

    ...buy a good baby sling.

Make sure it fits correctly.... Noah should have his head resting under your chin, not swinging around your navel like a sack of spuds.

Put a big coat over the top of babe and sling, hitch up Beth and go walkies. The movement, warmth and sound of your heartbeat will have Noah snoozing peacefully and Tash can relax in the bath and sleep.

DO NOT let her use this time to do stupid stuff like cleaning or laundry. This is HER rest time.

Happy Valentine's Day you four and thanks for the Saturday blog....

Now go and get on with nappy changing and give Noah a hug from all the bloggers :-)

    Me? Evil? Nah.

But I'm not usually a big fan of such displays myself, this one actually was very good. Especially as the birds wouldn't do as they were told and the guy was so funny about it.

Then he bought this bird out that can't fly, can run at 12mph and jumps to catch snakes out of trees. Even threw about a plastic snake to demonstrate. Classic.

You know how most of the "Do you remember where you were when.........." references are pretty negative?
Well I reckon that there's the best part of 6 or 7 MILLION people will remember where they were when young Noah Evans finally arrived.
He has a lot to live up to, but if his Dad keeps up the good work as per today's overtime stint then we don't have to worry too much do we?
Now - did anyone else have Christmas dinner today? We did. Spare turkey crown in the freezer that needed eaten so I was delegated to do the business. Roasties, sprouts, carrots, sausages and stuffing. Plus some frozen Yorkshire puds.
The present Mrs RfS declared herself well satisfied for Valentines. And there's Thorntons for telly time too!

Amazing blog from Chris today. It is wonderful just to gaze at a baby and the advice about a sling is first rate. It was the best thing we bought for our little man (and he's 29 this July!). Both his Dad and i had some wonderful walks with him strapped to one of us. It was then invaluable when his little sister came along two years later as left hands-free to hold on to him while she was secure. Oh going all gooey at the thoughts of them then, especially as little man gets married in the summer.
Shame about the rugby but something had to bring us down to earth this week!

Off to cook some steak and open the bubbly in deference to the day.

    Hello lovelies.

Chris, I can only echo what everyone else has said today and say thank you for sharing this lovely moment of your life with us. I have cried more tears of ... I was going to say joy but it's not just joy, it's gratitude too - to have shared this special moment - because it really does feel like you want us to share your happiness. Thank you so much. I'm so glad you've finally found peace in your life - you sound truly truly content.

My daughter gave me my one and only Valentines card this morning, telling me that no-one will ever love me as much as she does, so I guess I've done something right!

What a beautiful blog entry today, it is so lovely to hear that all 3 of you (Beth maybe not so!) are so happy and content. As you say, you have been tired before so you will get used to that, isn't it the least of your worries with such a beautiful human being now totally dependant on both of you for his every need? I am so happy for all of you that Noah's first 5 days have been such a dream! xxx

    Hi Chris
I have enjoyed reading your blog.
I am a mum myself and have recently launched a product called Mamascarf, which is a breastfeeding scarf. Would you like a Mamascarf for Natasha? It's for discreet but stylish feeding in public and it also provides essential support without the need for a cushion. I am happy to send her one if you would like as a new baby gift and then you can talk about how wonderful it is to all of your listeners!;0)

What a lovely entry today Chris, you've reminded me of watching my husband sitting with our 1st daughter nearly 8 years ago, then our son 5 years ago and our youngest daughter almost 3 years ago (gosh the time's gone quickly!), all the kids were always much more settled with him than me as when with me the would smell my milk and want to be fed, remember that in the future if ever Tash can't settle Noah! Your blogs this week have been so emotional and from the heart, thank you so much for sharing this special time with us all, wishing you and Tash lots of love and joy MCM xxx

At work we were all excited waiting to see if the curry worked and when the news came the texts were flying around. Thanks for sharing your excitement with us all - you made us all feel a part of it. Much needed with all the other doom and gloom rubbish in the news.

    Bloody Hell Rodney!...

He said, trying to sound al macho and geezerish.

That was lovely to read, just come back from a 70th birthday party of someone who my wife used to teach with, her friends so I drove, and was reflecting on what thoughts you have as you turn 70, with regards to how much longer an' all that....Then you flip it right round.

The advice you got was Bang on! I spent most of Max's formative years pushing him to, sit up, crawl, crawl faster, walk, run, talk etc etc. With Ciara, no pressure take your time dear.

They're both very different to each other, but I suspect they would have been anyway.

I also remember the fear...I used to play Golf, have cars to mess around with, drink at the Pub, watch loads of Rugby...Now I don't...I work hard and I work late but I always get home for dinner and bedtime before heading back to the office...I don't do most of the other things, but neither do I miss them ( I can be rubbish at Golf again when they are older).

I still do what I want, but, what I want is very different, I was told once that when you return home after the birth of your first child, someone comes along while you are asleep and swaps your brain....It's true and as you say, way more eloquently than I could ever hope to above. It's the best.

The only advice I will offer is...Don't take him to a Wasps match...He will support them from that day on, and there's not a thing you can do...Trust me.

DeeeeeeeeeV.......If you wish to know why they tape themselves up so.
The next time England are playing and they zoom in on Martin Johnson.
Look at his ears, if that doesn't help, call me!

CLP: I was really rooting for Scotland today thanks to the Evans interest. Cracking players aren't they....Unlucky Scotland, very unlucky.

Well that's me then for another 3 weeks. Am off back over t' sea aboard HMS Eejit on me latest missionary tour. And this time I shall take careful note what deck I'm parked on so as not to hold 50 irate truckers hostage.

Play nicely while I'm gone won't yous. I shall no doubt dip in now and again since I can't listen in to the fun and frolics. Boo. I did say I would get meself one a them MDF players so I can Offload the best bits, but the GD has expressly forbidden it since she knows it'll either trigger the Tourrettes when I can't do it or the knob falls off; or I'll be walkin' straight under the Luas, mid-titter.

Ripples, I know exactly what you mean re. Martin Johnson's ears. The rugger-bugger ex-hubby still sports a lovely cauliflower ear to this day. Mind you it's nowt to do with scrummin' down. More to do with 10 years' chewin' from meself, topped off with a flyin' kettle. Bless 'im.

And in the wake of Valentines' Day, cheer up if yous didn't get one. It's only in recent years that Renee and I have quit sending one to my older sister, fearful of the horrific fall-out if she discovered that she didn't have any admirers lurking beneath the parapet.

Not that we needed to worry. She always managed it. Slushy mystery cards used to arrive with her name on and stamped with HM Prison... no, that's not true.. Me, on the other hand, I always got the mucky ones that I used to have to secrete in some imaginitive place lest Renee found 'em and clattered the back of me ear. Like it ws MY fault..

You know what. That's one of life's great mysteries. How come a woman who can never find her glasses, remember what day it is or whether she's taken her water-tablets, can sniff out my private mail with more efficacy than the average bloodhound.

    Funny, that.

Righto. Must go, there's a funny noise and steam comin' from the kitchen. I bet she's found that letter from Bravissimo.

Wow Chris, have just finished reading your blog and although others made me emotional I am now writing after having had a good cry.

Amazing - it has taken my breath away.

Speaking a single mother to the two most brilliant, gorgeous and lovely 8 & 11 year old girls who have a father who shows no interest in seeing or even speaking to them and no interest in finacially supporting them ( a secondary thing - I would give anything for them to have a relationship with him as that is what they want), you have finally restored some of my faith in men.

Good morning all in the world of blog and how are we this fine morn?

So how many of you enjoyed a romantic Valentines meal last night?

I was asked to go out and do the shopping about 6.30pm and with a list in my hand, a pen and the purse, and keys in the other, off I went. Upon my return I was greeted outside by the amazing MWa and a big kiss and the words 'Happy Valentines Day'

It was at this point I became a little nervous as I had been told to expect something, all sorts passed through my mind but not to be written on here lol.

I entered our humble abode to find a candle lit picnic for 2 laid out in the centre of our living room, complete with flowers, chocolates and a bottle of Cava. Egg Mayonnaise with a sprinkling of Paprika to start, tomatoes cut into florets and heart shapes too, wow a lot of thought gone into this. Spicy, as she is, chicken wings next, went down great with the Cava and then fresh french bread with butter, crab pate, Boursin cheese and pork pie for the main and then the sweet was a superb Brandy snap basket with a lemon creme fresche, fresh raspberries and melted chocolate drizzled over the top. Finally we retired to the sofa to relax, cuddle up and watch some TV.

Now that was an awesome evening for me, MWa had thought exactly what she wanted to do for me/us and it was just perfect and I have saved the chocs for tonight.

I guess what I am saying is that when you are in love and we are given days to express it, in any way shape or form, embrace it and enjoy.

Enjoy the rest of today bloggers,

    Errol xxx

Good on you Mary, Martin O'Neill is a genius. Just slightly worried that with the UEFA Cup game and the Chelsea game coming up, he may opt to go 'soft' and rest a few players.

If I was him, I'd rest during the UEFA game. After all, finishing top 4 is far more important than the UEFA Cup, to me anyway.

I'd love it if Villa turned Chelsea over next Saturday. My other concern is that four top players are just one booking away from a ban, and with the run-in, they can't afford two or more top players banned as they don't have the depth in the squad.

We shall see. Everton are no mugs.
