What’s the difference between working in the public sector and working in the private sector when you’re in the same profession?

The gap between public and private sector earnings has been narrowing as a result of two years of frozen public sector pay starting in 2011 followed by 1% caps.
Earlier this month the government announced that the cap on public sector pay rise is to be lifted.
