The great grammar school discussion
5 live has gone Back to School to look at the choices available to pupils in England and the benefits and pitfalls of selective education - as the government considers new programme of grammar schools.
It comes as a BBC investigation has found that fewer than half of England's grammar schools gives any priority to children from poorer backgrounds in their admission policies.
In Lincolnshire, Carre’s Grammar School and St George's Academy hold some classes together. Ellie, who goes to the grammar, and Sam, who’s at the academy, had a chat about how their schools compare.
“The standards of teaching are just as good, and environments are very similar,” says Ellie. But Sam’s happy with his choice: “I really enjoy coming to class, I get to do English and maths, as well as subjects like drama – I am happy with it.”
