Is this the country’s oldest ballerina?
A 71 year old ballerina has inspired dozens of people in her area to take up dancing – old and young. Doreen Pechey says she’s now a bit of a celebrity in her Oxfordshire neighbourhood, after becoming the oldest person in the country to pass the Royal Academy’s Grade 6 dance examination.
5 live Breakfast went along to see how her success has gone down with the rest of her ballet class in Caversham. “You rather hope that some people would find it encouraging, but there's been so many people saying it's inspirational,” she said.
The children at the class think it’s great to dance with Doreen: “I was a tiny bit nervous the first time, coming in and seeing a record breaker.”
“I want other people to enjoy life, this is not a rehearsal - I want them to get out and do what they can,” added Doreen.
