Security expert praises police for Man Utd evacuation
The former head of the Flying Squad, John O’Connor, has praised the response of the police after Old Trafford had to be evacuated ahead of the game v Bournemouth following the discovery of a suspect package.
A controlled explosion was carried out after two stands - the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand and the Stretford End - were evacuated before the final game of the season and sniffer dogs brought in.
Kick-off, due at 15:00 BST, was delayed and shortly afterwards the match was abandoned on police advice.
A bomb disposal team carried out the explosion at about 16:30 BST.
“It shows the contingency plans work,” O’Connor said.
“The police are likely to err on the side of caution and I don’t blame them.
“They’re responding in a way which was admirable,” he added.
