Cyclist Graeme Obree reveals agony of becoming a champion
The twice world record-holding cyclist Graeme Obree, known as the Flying Scotsman, has described the rush of winning and his belief that in order to do so "your soul's got to want it".
During his career he twice broke the world hour record and was the individual pursuit world champion in 1993 and 1995. He built his own bikes and invented new riding positions. A documentary called Battle Mountain about his life and his attempt to set a new human powered land speed record in 2013 is due to be released.
Describing the extreme physical experience of winning the world individual pursuit in 1995, he said "you hear your lungs gasping….oxygen deprivation means that you almost can't think straight…so almost like your soul's got to want it...it's like who really wants it deeply the most...I so desperately needed to win that race and that's how I won it."
