In southern Thailand a vicious insurgency has claimed two and a half thousand lives in the past four years.

It's a struggle which dates back to the colonial era. But recently tactics have changed and Islamic insurgent groups have targeted children, old people and Buddhist monks as well as Thai government troops.

In the first of a new series of "Global Account", Angus Stickler travels into the disputed "Red Zone" of Southern Thailand to discover the victims of a brutal and under-reported war, and to track down the shadowy people behind the killings.

Along the way, he discovers that the insurgency is being aided and funded by foreign groups, and hears that the violence, confined so far to the southern provinces, might eventually threaten the Thai capital of Bangkok and the popular western tourist resort of Phuket.
