Pauli: Twenty-Something in Music

Pauli travels the world as a drummer and DJ. Find out how he got there

Did you always want to work in music?

No. When I was at college if you were 'doing music', this automatically meant that you wanted to be a grime MC.

I’ve learned the importance of hard work and self-sufficiency
Pauli

This was when grime was first starting out, so there was a stigma attached to anyone who was a grime MC at that time and although I was a massive grime fan, it certainly wasn't the genre that I wanted to be defined by.

What do you love most about what you do?

I love how my job is so surreal. I get paid to travel around the world and I’m staying in great hotels, meeting new people the whole time.

Sharing my passion with audiences is amazing. Whether that be 100 or 100,000 people, I really love the transfer of energy.

What did you enjoy most when you were at school?

When I was in Year 10 at grammar school I got kicked out of GCSE music. So I started a jazz band, and that became my escape from the mundane routine of school. It shows that even if you’re not 'studious', it doesn't mean you can't get on.

Did you go to Uni?

Yes, I went to Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication.

I have always been passionate about music. A lot of musicians go to university to study something to 'fall back on' in case music doesn't work out. I understand this but I chose to go to uni to hone my interest and skills in content creation and broadcasting. Music was what I would have to fall back on.

What was your first job in music and how did you get it?

My first job in music was working as a tape op in one of the old Virgin London Studios.

It was far from glamorous; loading and wiping two-inch tapes all day, but being able to play my own music through massive speakers during downtime made the 10 hour days so worthwhile.

If you could give any advice to yourself when you were a teenager what would you say?

Live in the moment. Don't get caught up in your past or the future - truly enjoy every present moment.

What's the most important thing you've learnt during your career so far?

Be patient. Patience really is a virtue and should be practiced as much as possible, as a lot of the time I've found I have to wait for other people to progress my processes, so the best way forward is to be patient and humble, knowing that your time will come if you put in the effort.

I've also learned the importance of hard work and self-sufficiency. Do as much as you can without relying on other people – make things happen.

What are the three qualities someone who wants to work in music should have?

What I’d describe as the 3Cs: Commitment, Creativity & Courage.

Be committed to the project you are working on. Be creative in your approach to executing the project and have courage to share and communicate your projects to the world.

Which websites/resources are musts for any person aspiring to get into music?

Your own website. Make sure you own your name dot com and you’re displaying all of your attributes on as many platforms as possible. People need to be able to find you.
