Nick Grimshaw: Celebs, Creme Eggs and all his 2017 highlights

Radio 1's Breakfast Show has seen some of the biggest stars in the world stop by in 2017. From Hollywood A-listers to the pop elite and fashionistas, they've all woken up at the crack of dawn for a chat with Nick Grimshaw.

No one knows how to sweet-talk celebrities quite like Grimmy and these are his favourite moments from the past 12 months.

Harry Styles visited Radio 1 several times this year on his way to becoming a solo superstar. What’s it like having to interview your mate on live radio?

"It's quite good actually because it makes you forget you're on the radio and it makes it really conversational and really easy. That's when I think the radio is fun.

"It's good knowing stuff because you know when to wind them up and when not to. You know how they'll take stuff.

"Harry's year has been amazing. He's done incredibly well. He came in here in April with the album and we've not seen him since because he's been on a whirlwind album tour. His suit collection is really quite something."

Another of your friends, Rita Ora, has also had a massive year…

Rita Ora does the WORST impression of Cheryl

But at least her attempts at a Newcastle accent kept Liam Payne amused.

"Rita is my absolute favourite. She's such a gift to have as a guest because she is so funny and very genuine. She makes me laugh every day and I love that when she comes on the radio she is exactly the same as she is when she's come to my house for her tea.

"The other day we had her on and thought we were going to get through an interview and it was going to be quite sensible but then she didn't know what the word 'nativity' meant and it absolutely killed me. She kept calling it a 'lativity'. She's the best guest."

How big a moment for you was it to have Kristen Wiig in the studio?

"OMG I loved Kristen Wiig. She was a bit scared of me I think, because I’m obsessive over Bridesmaids. I’ve got a tattoo of 'I can't' on my arm because she says it in this scene I love.

"I was really nervous interviewing her. If you're genuinely a fan, you do get a bit nervous because you want them to like you. When I’ve interviewed Rihanna or seen her I'm always such a nerd and can't talk to her. I guess it's like when you fancy someone and you go on a date and you can't talk. It's like that feeling of being a bit rubbish.

"I had it with Jon Boyega as well because I love Star Wars and he's so cool in it."

Who else was the most fun to interview this year?

"We've had real fun with Nick Jonas this year. I don't remember why, I just remember his face laughing. We loved Demi Lovato, she was on great form. Selena Gomez was on really good form, she's going to be back on in the New Year."

“I've poured my heart into my music” – Selena Gomez talks about her forthcoming album

Grimmy talks to Selena about her new album and the inspiration behind it.

"We loved Lana Del Rey. I'd never had her on the show and I used to play her at night-time a lot on my evening show but I’d never had her on. She was really great and really funny.

"I'd met her once at a dinner party. She's a proper riot."

What do Lana Del Rey’s fans always ask her?

About her hair, every time… and they like it big!

"I loved Lorde, we did the Creme Egg song with her."

"We got Niall Horan to pretend to book a Niall impersonator, pretending he wasn't Niall which was really fun."

Niall Horan Pranks Niall Horan Impersonator

Niall calls a Niall Horan impersonator to book him for a fake party.

"Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran together, she was on one this year. She was wild when she came in, swearing at Ed Sheeran because he was gunning for her No.1 spot."

"I really enjoyed Sam Smith when he came in and we listened to the album. We spoke about the whole process of him making the album and he was just really interesting and really funny.

"He told really great stories about how he came to realise he'd neglected his gay life and didn't know too much about going out gay clubbing or the culture or the history of being gay.

"He researched it, did loads of study and found his feet in the gay world. He talked all about that and that was really fun."

How empowering was it to get involved in big Radio 1 moments like My Mind & Me and the Teen Awards?

Filters? Yes or No?

Should we stop using filters on social media?

"Radio 1 is so honest in talking about mental health this year or whatever else we're going through. I don't think that anyone tries to pretend we're all perfect and everything's fine so it's great to get DJs to talk, me included, about my mind, how I feel and how I deal with anxiety."

"Meeting the Teen Heroes is honestly my favourite part of the Teen Awards and when we first started doing I didn't know if teenagers would want to hear their stories when they're all wound up and wanting to see people like Camila Cabello.

"But it's really nice to go from massive pop stars doing something really fun on stage to getting these inspirational, heart-warming stories."

Apart from all the amazing moments on air, what have been your personal highlights of 2017?

"I went on holiday with my mum. We went on holiday to Miami and to New York and we had a really great time. We'd never done that before, it was a really important time for us.

"I liked it more than my mum liked it. I think my mum was like 'please stop talking'. But we had a really great time."
