She says: “The tracks I’ve selected are ones I feel have a resonance to my work. Most choices are dark, when a lot of my work is vibrant but there’s real beauty in the darkness I’m drawn to.
When I design I always have the future in mind but delve to the past for sounds - one day I’ll actually make a soundtrack. In 2000 Jim Thirwell of Foetus let me sing/talk over one of his tracks, the overture from ‘Pigdom Come’, that’s the closest I’ve got so far.
For the backdrop to my exhibition I’ve chosen some past show tracks, from David Lynch, The Fall, JAMC, Sisters of Mercy etc. I work alone so can drift in and out of a world of fabric and colour and sound. I design in my head so the feel of the music enters the space I’m in; it goes hand in hand for me.
As I’m designing and its coming together I start pacing back and forth across my studio feeling the energy of the tracks and imagine my models moving. It’s all about mood, both the collection and the accompanying music.
I always do my own show time tracks as the clothes and the sounds are intertwined. Otherwise it would be like giving someone else the job of colourist; the colours are vital, and the combinations are worked out with precision to enhance the vision in my head.
Sometimes I come unstuck and have had a track I’m certain of and then when I’m actually laying them down realise although it’s perfect, it’s totally out of sync with the others. It’s the same with colours, I can select 6 amazing colours, but when combined I may have to lose my favourite because its upsetting the balance. It’s all about balance and perfection in imbalance, it’s like a puzzle I have to solve…that’s the joy.
The selection includes David Lynch, Andre Williams, who invited Pam on tour; Judy Nylon and Party Fears Two by The Associates, with Pam remembering an “immediate connection that was never broken”, with the band’s singer, her friend Billy MacKenzie.
