Worthing Utd boss's tribute to Shoreham air crash victims

A week after the Shoreham air crash, Worthing United manager Nigel Geary pays an emotional tribute to players Matt Grimstone and Jacob Schilt who were among the victims.

A week after the Shoreham air crash, Worthing United manager Nigel Geary paid tribute to players Matt Grimstone and Jacob Schilt, who were among the victims killed when a Hawker Hunter jet crashed onto the A27.

Goalkeeper Matt Grimstone and midfielder Jacob Schilt, both 23, were on their way to play for Worthing United against Loxwood in the Southern Combination Premier Division at Lyons Way at the time.

Geary said the club is devastated: "[It's] pretty much on it's knees."

"I've not been away from the ground all week. I've been home just to sleep, and that's it," he said. "I had the week off work, and I was at the ground at 9am every day, and often not away until 11 o'clock at night dealing with everything."

Geary said the club brought current and former team-mates together in the week to remember Grimstone and Schilt.

"It's good to all get together to talk about them which wasn't about football or anything like that, " he said. "It really helped the players. They were coming in in floods of tears the first time they saw the stadium, but it really helped them get through and helped us all just to be around each other.

"It turned into a nice evening just remembering Jacob and Matt."

Grimstone and Schilt were two of 11 who died after a vintage Hawker Hunter jet crashed into the A27 in West Sussex on 22 August, causing the most serious crash at a UK air show for many years.
