Ardingly 4
The red and blue teams shop in West Sussex, and Charlie Ross meets Brenda Mathews, whose collection of more than 4,500 hankies is not to be sniffed at.
Charlie Ross is blown away by a collection of thousands of historic handkerchiefs belonging to Brenda Mathews, some dating back to the 1930s. Meanwhile, the teams are sniffing around the stalls at a bustling antiques fair in Ardingly, West Sussex. Cafe owner Caroline and board game designer Andy are on the lookout for military items and trinkets, while mum-and-son gym goers Jenny and Matt plan to flex their spending muscles. Shopping alongside them are their experts Nick Hall and Stephanie Connell.
The blues focus on their challenge straightaway, asking a dealer for their best price on a boxed microscope, but with a few lenses missing, Jenny and Matt decide to press on. For the reds, it’s an open-and-shut case when they find out that a small chest of drawers is missing a few handles. Hoping the bidders bite in Buckinghamshire is auctioneer Hugo Lemon.
