Shostakovich from Manchester

The BBC Philharmonic and John Storgards are joined by the Estonian National Male Choir and bass-baritone Albert Dohmen for Shostakovich's Symphony No 13, 'Babi Yar'.

The BBC Philharmonic and their Chief Conductor, John Storgards, welcome the outstanding Estonian National Male Choir to the Bridgewater Hall for a rare performance of Shostakovich's Symphony No.13. Shostakovich set texts by Russian dissident poet Yevgeni Yevtushenko, including his searing 'Babi Yar', in which he condemns anti-Semitism and writes powerfully about the 1941 massacre in Kyiv perpetrated by the Nazis, as a starting point for the Symphony. The programme opens with music based on the text of Psalm 130 'De profundis clamavi ad te Domine' (Out of the depths have I called to you, Lord), poetry both personal and universal, here set by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. Jennifer Pike joins the orchestra for Sibelius's dark and dramatic Violin Concerto.
