Yoko Ono – Music, Art and Activism at 80

Yoko Ono will always be known as the wife of John Lennon, but before they met she was an artist and musician in her own right. This year she turned 80 years old, yet she’s continued to be active in art, music, and activism since the sixties, and around her birthday she performed with her Plastic Ono Band and opened a retrospective of her art in Frankfurt. In recent years she’s collaborated with musicians like Lady Gaga, and her remixed work hit the top of the US dance charts. Now she’s curating the Meltdown music festival at London’s Southbank, which she says will celebrate “feminism and the plight of women.” She’s including “strong women,” such as Siouxsie Sioux, Peaches, Patti Smith, Marianne Faithfull, and more, as well as art, activism, her own Plastic Ono Band, her son Sean, and the spirit of John himself, via a performance of Double Fantasy - the last album she created with him just before he died. Emma Barnett met Yoko Ono to talk to her about her life and work, being so active still at 80, and forever being a Beatles wife.

You can read Emma Barnett's blog about meeting Yoko Ono, which she wrote for the Telegraph, here Telegraph.co.uk/women

Yoko Ono is curator of this year’s Meltdown at London’s Southbank Centre, which will run from 14 to 23 June 2013.

Caring for relatives with dementia

There are more than 600,000 people in the UK who are caring at home for a relative with dementia. But new research from Carers UK has found that a third of those caring full-time receive no practical support. We discuss the challenges facing carers and what support is available to them. We’ll hear from Helena Herklots of Carers UK, George McNamara of the Alzheimer's Society and from Judith, who is caring for her mother in the last stages of dementia.
