What is BBC Radio Shropshire?

BBC Radio Shropshire is the BBC's local radio station for the county of Shropshire. It broadcasts a mix of entertainment, news and debate, local information like travel and weather and music, and aims to reflect life in the county.

What is the remit of BBC Radio Shropshire?

The station offers a range of news and information about Shropshire along with national and international news. Some parts of the day (breakfast and teatime) are mainly news-focused, while at other times you'll hear a wider range of local events, people and places of interest. And whatever we’re talking about, we want it to be entertaining and friendly.

BBC Radio Shropshire reflects local sport with football commentaries on every Shrewsbury Town and AFC Telford United game, plus reports on a range of other sporting activities.

Although most listeners are over 50, the station aims to appeal to anyone who is interested in the area.

History of BBC Radio Shropshire

BBC Radio Shropshire launched on April 23rd - St George's Day - 1985. The first breakfast show was presented by Diane Kemp, followed by Colin Young on the morning show. The opening was marked by a balloon flight from Attingham Park, and the launch of an appeal for a new lifeboat on the Welsh coast. From day one, the station has been one of the most popular BBC Local Radio stations. Although the station's changed somewhat over the years, the basic mission has always been to reflect life in Shropshire.

How to listen

BBC Radio Shropshire is available on 96FM across much of the county from the main Wrekin transmitter. It's also on 95FM around Ludlow, 90FM in the Church Stretton area and 104.1FM in Clun.

You can also hear us on a Freeview TV in parts of the Midlands on channel 713.

We also broadcast on DAB Digital Radio from the Wrekin, covering central and eastern Shropshire, and online via bbc.co.uk/radioshropshire
