BBC East Midlands Sports Awards Winners 2007
|
It was a treble triumph for the Leicester Tigers in this year's BBC East
Midlands Sports Awards as Martin Corry collected
the East Midlands Sports Personality of the Year award, with Leicester
Tigers winning Team of the Year 2007 and former player, Martin Johnson,
scooping the Lifetime Achievement award.
Martin Corry was voted Sports Personality of the Year for the East
Midlands by members of the public.
The award recognises the outstanding
achievements that Martin has made with both Leicester Tigers and the
England Rugby Union team.
In another great year for sport in the East Midlands BBC Sport's John
Inverdale presented awards to winners from all over the region,
including Derby County's Steve Howard winning the Football Achievement
Award; Nottingham's Sam Hynd winning the Junior Disabled Sports
Personality Award; and Northamptonshire's Hollie Avil winning the Junior
Sports Personality Award.
Shepshed's Nina Walker won the Sports Unsung
Hero Award 2007.
The East Midlands BBC Unsung Hero Award 2007 honours individuals from the world of grassroots sport who have made a
difference to their community, working on a voluntary basis, to prepare
facilities, roll the pitch, coach the juniors, run local sports leagues
or work behind the scenes so that sport can be played and enjoyed
throughout the UK.
Robinsons is for the first time the event sponsor of the BBC's Sports
Personality of the Year.
They are also sponsoring the BBC Sports
Unsung Hero Award, now in its fifth year, which recognises and rewards
outstanding contribution by individuals at the grassroots level of local
sport.
Bursaries of up to £2,500 are available to the winners of each
regional award, to help them with their work in sport.
Aziz Rashid, Head of Local Programming, BBC East Midlands, says: "Congratulations to all of the winners in what proved to be another
memorable awards ceremony for the region.
"Our sports people have given
us another great year to look back on and their efforts and achievements
help the BBC East Midlands Sports Awards go from strength to strength.
"What was also pleasing this year was, for the first time, we had
members of the public forming the bulk of the audience. This helped
create a fantastic atmosphere on the night and it must have been even
more rewarding for the winners of our awards to have their fans
supporting them during the ceremony."
