A career diplomat, who has served extensively in the Middle East. Special envoy to the Central Asian Republic of Tyrgyztan in the Nineties. Former foreign adviser to the Prime Minister, now rewarded with the plum job in the British diplomatic service.

Job: Counsellor, External Affairs

Age: 36

Joined the Foreign Office from the Army. Recruited by Intelligence and now serves as MI6's man in the Embassy. The job of embedded spook suits his style. His moral compass is adjusted to ends, not means. His priority is to protect the UK Government's political and diplomatic interests.

 

Name: Jane Lavery (Eva Birthistle)

Job: Human rights lawyer

Age: 32

Joined the FCO straight from university. Specialises in human rights. Often seconded to consulates abroad, where she defends the interests of British citizens who have fallen foul of the law.

Foreign Office to the tips of his fingers. Utterly devoted to Whitehall and the impartiality of the civil service. Hardworking and loyal, Deputy Head of Mission is as high as he will ever rise.

 

Name: Lynne Warner (Sharon Gless)

Job: Secretary of Defense, US Government

Age: 63

Deeply patriotic, devoted to the ideals of sacrifice and service. A congresswoman since 1978, she later resigned to serve as CEO of Armitage International. The US President invited her back into Government as Secretary of Defense. Lost her only son in action.

Job: Undersecretary for Defense Intelligence

Age: 35

Ambitious, charming and intelligent. A natural Republican with first-hand experience of US engagement in the foreign affairs crises of the Nineties - Iraq and Kosovo.

 

Name: Luke Gardner (Lennie James)

Job: British ex-paratrooper

Age: 42

One-time Falklands hero, now on Florida's Death Row for murder.

 

Name: James Sinclair (Alex Jennings)

Job: Ex British Ambassador to Tyrgyzan

Age: 46

Married to Saida, sister of Eshan Borisvitch (Democractic Opposition Leader, Tyrgyztan), with whom he has a 9-year-old son. Was an outspoken critic of the Usman regime. Recalled by the Foreign Office for speaking out against UK foreign policy and sacked. Now a pariah in Foreign Office circles.
