An animated Aussie!

Tea Total, by Lucy Izzard

Lucy Izzard

Lucy Izzard's animation 'Tea Total' won the BBC New Animator Award in 2005. Australian born Lucy was a non-tea drinker before she made the film, which takes a quirky look at the British obsession with a good cuppa!

Lucy's film went on to be screened at the Brief Encounters Film Festival in Bristol, and BBC Three commissioned more of her animations for a series of shorts looking at other peculiar British customs. Watch some of these films in the showcase area.

Tea Total was made as part of Lucy's final year course work at Kingston University where she was studying Illustration and Animation. After many afternoons spent in tearooms, consuming cake and tea for research purposes, Lucy now feels truly British, as she loves a nice cuppa too!

I really wanted to make sure that all the voices in my film were genuine because I wanted the slightly eccentric side of British life to come across.

Tea Total was made using 24 drawings for every second of film and it took several months to complete. But the hard work paid off, as not only did Lucy win the New Animator award, she also graduated with first class honours.

It's really hard climbing the ladder in the world of animation, so winning the award has been an absolutely brilliant boost for my career. It's fantastic that I can now count the BBC as a client and this new series will certainly keep me busy for the next few months.
