How do I clear the cache (browsing data or temporary internet files)?

Your browser saves information from websites to help them load more quickly next time you visit them and to remember any settings you set. This is known as a cache. If you’re experiencing problems with a BBC website, try signing out of your account and clearing the cache. Here's how:

Windows

Google Chrome

  1. Sign out of your BBC account (click on your account name and select Sign out then Continue)
  2. Click the Chrome menu button on the browser toolbar (three vertical dots) and select Clear browsing data
  3. Use the menu at the top to select the amount of data that you want to delete; select beginning of time to delete everything
  4. Select the tickboxes for the types of information that you want to remove
  5. Click Clear browsing data

Firefox

  1. Sign out of your BBC account (click on your account name and select Sign out then Continue)
  2. Click on the Menu button (three horizontal lines on the top right), then select Settings
  3. From the menu choices on the left, select Privacy & Security
  4. In the Cookies and Site Data section, click Clear Data
  5. Select Cached Web Content
  6. Click Clear

Edge

  1. Sign out of your BBC account (click on your account name and select Sign out then Continue)
  2. Click on the Menu button (three dots on the top right), then select Settings
  3. Choose Privacy, search, and services from the left-hand menu
  4. Under Clear browsing data select Choose what to clear
  5. Choose a time range to remove. All time will clear all of your browser cache. 
  6. Tick Cookies and other site data
  7. Click Clear now

 


Apple Macintosh

Safari

  1. Sign out of your BBC account (click on your account name and select Sign out then Continue)
  2. In the Safari menu, select Clear History and Website Data

Firefox

  1. Sign out of your BBC account (click on your account name and select Sign out then Continue)
  2. In the Firefox menu, go to Tools and select Clear Private Data
  3. Ensure the Cache box is ticked
  4. Click Clear Private Data Now

Google Chrome

  1. Sign out of your BBC account (click on your account name and select Sign out then Continue)
  2. In the Chrome menu, select Clear Browsing Data
  3. Select the checkboxes for the types of information you wish to remove
  4. Use the Clear data from this period menu to select the amount of data you want to delete
  5. Click Clear Browsing Data

 


iPad or iPhone

Safari

  1. Sign out of your BBC account (click on your account name and select Sign out then Continue)
  2. Open the Settings app on your iPad or iPhone
  3. Scroll down the list of options on the left and tap on Safari
  4. On the right, choose Clear History and Website Data

BBC iPlayer app

  1. Sign out of your BBC account (tap on your account name and select "Sign out" then "Continue")
  2. Delete and reinstall the app. Please bear in mind that this will remove any programmes you have downloaded. When you reinstall, you will need to download these again
     

Android phone or tablet

Internet browser

BBC iPlayer app

  1. Long-press on the BBC iPlayer app then select App info
  2. Under Storage and cache, choose Clear cache

If you continue to have problems after clearing the cache, try clearing the storage. There are two ways to do this. 

  1. Long-press on the BBC iPlayer app then select App info
  2. Under Storage and cache, choose Clear storage*

*Please bear in mind that this will remove any programmes you have downloaded. When you reinstall, you will need to download these again
