One Street: making money

Two of the High Street's families tried to make some money. The Williams' cleared out their attic and the Powson's collected their clutter.

They set up stalls and logged on to the internet hoping to sell their unwanted items.

We took the families to a car boot sale in Porthcawl. As well as being a great way to de-clutter, it can also be a lucrative day out.

Successful business woman Aimee Bateman loves the hussle and bustle of car boot sales. Here are some of her tips for successful car boot selling:

·         Don't put prices on any of your products as it may put people off

·         Try and chat to as many potential punters as possible

·         Put things that are likely to be the most popular sellers - e.g. toys - at the centre of your stall

·         A box for punters to rummage through is good, but display your best wares properly

·         Stickers saying 'buy me' on goods add humour and provide another talking point

·         Position your tables diagonally away from you to draw people into your space

Back on the street the families tackled the internet auction sites and try and get rid of the stuff that didn't sell at the car boot sale. And if you want to try your hand at internet auction selling, here are some more tips to help you sell your unwanted stuff:

·         Be as detailed in your text description of the item as possible, e.g. shoe height, colour, heel height, material...

·         Good pictures are a must - make sure the product looks as attractive as it can, and provide multiple photos to show it from all angles

·         Provide a story - so if it is an unused wedding gift your parents were given, say that

·         If the product is a pink jacket, write "pink jacket" in a pink font to add colour

·         Make sure there are no spelling mistakes or other typos

We're looking for a new street, community group or club who could do with a helping hand from X-ray to achieve their goal. And if that sounds like you, now's the time to get in touch.
