I report for BBC TV, radio and online on US national security.
Before coming to Washington, I reported from China for six years as the BBC's Beijing correspondent, and from Indonesia as Jakarta correspondent. Reporting assignments have taken me to Iraq and Afghanistan, Pakistan, North Korea, Burma and many other countries.
I've a degree in Chinese from the University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies, and have been a Visiting Scholar at Harvard University.
