Do you agree with PFA awards?

Post categories:

Alistair Magowan - BBC Sport | 17:50 UK time, Monday, 18 April 2011

As expected, Tottenham's Gareth Bale picked up the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year award on Sunday, while Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere was named Young Player of the Year.

Both were deserving winners, according to former Manchester United and England defender Gary Pallister, who was PFA Player of the Year himself in 1992.

But the timing of the awards, voted for by players in March, has brought some debate as to whether they are truly reflective of the whole season.

"It's player of the year not player of the season, so that's where the difficulty lies," Pallister told BBC Sport. "For me, it should be PFA player of the season. The way it is now sometimes makes the voting a bit unbalanced.

"It's a great award to be given whether it's for a year's work or a season's work. It's just that when it comes close to the vote, whoever is having a great time will be very prominent in people's minds."

That issue seems particularly relevant to Bale, who lit up the autumn with two superb displays for Tottenham against reigning Champions League holders Inter Milan.

Since Christmas, he has struggled to hit the same heights, largely through injury, prompting some fans to wonder whether the voting results would have been different had the ballot taken place later in the season.

Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic, Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez and West Ham's Scott Parker, who were all among the seven Player of the Year nominees, have been consistent performers.

Then there are the likes of Blackpool's Charlie Adam, who has been a talisman during his team's first season in the Premier League, and Manchester United winger Nani, who was only named in the young player category despite, according to Pallister, enjoying "his best season in a United shirt".

Casting individual opinions aside, there are several other anomalies in the voting.

How is it that a player, such as Parker, can be nominated for player of the year but not make it into the Premier League team of the year?

Scott Parker made it as one of the nominees for player of the year but did not make team of the year

PFA team of the year did not include main nominees Parker, Van der Vaart or Adam

And if Bale is player of the year, how can he not be young player of the year, too, given he was also nominated in that category?

We will come onto these points later but first the question of why the ballot forms are handed out in March rather than towards the end of the season.

"I understand that concern but it's not a team competition," PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor explained to BBC Sport. "It's nothing to do with who has won the Premier League, the FA Cup or the Champions League.

"It's simply the view of the fellow professionals on which player has had an outstanding season.

"Also, before our awards began, the main prize was always the Football Writers' award, so we didn't want to clash and that's why we have it earlier.

"It was done out of respect for an award that has been running for a lot longer."

Taylor says there are no plans to change the voting schedule and points out that the PFA and Writers' awards often go to the same player anyway.

But Pallister believes that having both awards at the end of the season would not be a problem for players or fans and it would give the PFA award greater impact.

"The end of the season is when trophies and awards are given out, and ultimately it's all about what you can do in one season," he adds.

"I'm sure it would be nice to get the writers' award as well but it means more to a player to get an award from his peers. It's the ultimate honour for a footballer."

So what about those other discrepancies?

Taylor explains that the likes of Parker, Adam and Tottenham's Rafael van der Vaart all made it into the Player of the Year nominations because those are voted by players across the 92 Premier League and Football League clubs, whereas the team of the year for each tier, is voted by players from that division only.

So you might have players voting for Parker, Van der Vaart and Adam even though they have never played against them. That also explains why there are some players in the Premier League team of the year who are not among the seven main nominees.

The issue of Bale being nominated for both Player and Young Player of the Year is entirely down to the players' voting patterns.

"The majority of people thought that Gareth Bale had particularly distinguished himself at top senior level," said Taylor.

"I'm surprised that anybody would raise any doubts about that, but everyone has their own opinions, that's what makes the world go around.

"In fairness to Jack Wilshere he's only just come through. He was on loan at Bolton last season and he's an outstanding youngster who has blossomed not only for Arsenal but for England.

"It's really impressive for him that he's got the young player - Gareth could have won them both but clearly the players felt he had performed at the top level.

"With regards to Jack, I think it's a case of Gareth has been around a lot longer, whereas Jack has burst onto the scene this season."

Do you agree with the winners and would you like to see a change in the voting process?

Both are deserving winners, although I certainlly would have given Nani more thought, he has had a superb season, and to not even consider him is very harsh.

  • Comment number 2.

"But the timing of the awards, voted for by players in March, has brought some debate as to whether they are truly reflective of the whole season"

Totally agree, with no better example than RVN catapulting Man Utd to the title in April and May that season, and being left out altogether!

    Van der Sar

    Sagna
    Kompany
    Vidic
    Baines

    Nani
    Parker
    Adam
    Nasri

    Tevez
    Van Persie

  • Comment number 4.

All from top 5 clubs, in the league, i cant say im shocked, Parker has been superb all season and practically carried West Ham through games not least some of his "inspirational pep talks at half time"

Im also surprised Cole got the Nod over Baines, who has been more consistant all season scoring, assisting and putting in good defensive work.

Finally Maybe Modric over Wilshire in the middle would complete my team of the season (and that does only include up till March)

  • Comment number 5.

Bale's a v.good player, but besides the two great performances against Inter Milan, what else has he really done? Solid, consistent performances by Vidic, Nasri and Adam have been over-looked I think.

Plus, I think Hernandez (18 goals in first season, plus a decent world cup) is slightly unlucky that Wilshere has had a v.good year also, otherwise he would have deserved the young player award.

  • Comment number 6.

I know it will seem like team bias but I'm amazed that Baines hasn't made team of the year. He's got goals more assists than almost any other player, let alone defenders and yet he's neither on the player short list or the team of the year. I know missing out on Euorope didn't help but still seems a little unlucky to me.

  • Comment number 7.

A true joke award, made up by too many flash in the pan players, who are excellent in occasional performances, but anonymous for the rest of the season and as for the 'team' of the season, it's great to see the players from 'smaller' clubs who've proven to be every bit as good as those at the 'big' teams, oh wait a minute...

  • Comment number 8.

Not suprpised by the results to be honest, the team of the year all coming from the top 5 clubs and the winner being the result of media hype (I think it was Giggs who won it despite only starting 12 games, just because the pundits talked him up so much)

Bale has been overhyped because of two good performances in the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE, whereas in the 38-game PREMIER LEAGUE he has been very, very inconsistent and nowhere near player of the year - having only one assist all season tells it all.

It's shocking that Scott Parker and Charlie Adam, who have carried their teams this season and not once have had a slight dip in form don't get picked over two players such as Bale and Nasri, who have had some excellent games but have had long spells where they do nothing. Even Berbatov shouldn't be in there, I know he's the top scorer but he can't even get a game for United now (and if we're going off stats, let me re-iterate Bale's one assist). Some I agree with, like Van Der Sar, Kompany, Nani, Wilshere and Tevez, but it's disappointing to see players who have had excellent seasons not get the credit they deserve because they are not in top 5 clubs, like most definitely Baines, Adam and Parker.

A lot of you may disagree but I think Peter Odemwingie would have been a better choice than Berbatov in team of the year - first season in the prem in a promoted club and he has been excellent. Also Andy Carroll would have definitely been up there for young player of the year had he not got injured (and that's from a Toon fan)

  • Comment number 9.

forgot to add, Ashley Cole over Leighton Baines is probably the worst decision of the lot. Baines has been outstanding and his stats support that, Ashley Cole hasn't had a great season. But hey, Cole is supposedly the best left-back in the world, so what do I know.

  • Comment number 10.

    Team of the season,

    Robinson

    Coleman
    Vidic
    Huth
    Jose Enrique

    Nani
    Adam
    Nolan
    Bale

    Odemwingie
    Tevez

  • Comment number 11.

Were it not for the two games against Inter, Bale wouldn't even have made the shortlist. Of that I'm convinced.

  • Comment number 12.

All through autumn and winter Scott Parker single handedly kept West Ham from being cut adrift at the bottom. He should be playing Champions League football but when he found himself in a relegation scrap he fought every minute. For consistent performance and impact he outshines everyone including Bale (and I'm Welsh).

  • Comment number 13.

As a Spurs fan, i'm delighted to see Bale win it, as I'm sure had he not been hampered by injury, he would have excelled even more so than he has. Does media hype help? Probably, but wouldn't it do the same if it was the "fans player of the year" vote?

    Of course it would.

  • Comment number 14.

pfa is not a big award, why is that no english players have won a fifa world player of the award our big hope is rooney, and jack wilshere, after them what the english team will be a joke

  • Comment number 15.

jog on badfella... everyone else is having a constructive debate. Bad choice to leave Baines out of team of the year and Bale does seem to have been picked on the back of only a few performances. Can't argue too much with no. 3 but wouldn't have Van Persie or Sagna

  • Comment number 16.

Bale? Has not been performing well for well over half of the season. Put in a few good games, but that's all, he lacks the consistency of the better Premier League players.
I cannot argue with Wilshere as Young Player of the Year, though by the end of the season it is not unforeseeable that Hernandez could have been a better choice.
I think its a shame that Nani was completely overlooked, he has the most assists in the league, and imo, is far more consistent that Bale.
In fact, if I had the choice, I would go for van der Vaart over Bale, but that's probably just personal preference.
Although there is nothing to be done about it now, so congratulations to Wilshere and Bale.

  • Comment number 17.

really cant understand these awards whatsoever. Fair enough its nice to get voted by your fellow professionals, but the problem is that year after year, you end up getting players who perform worse than others show up in the list and that must be hugely demoralising for the deserving player.
    Van der Sar

    Sagna
    Kompany
    Vidic
    Baines

    Nani
    Parker
    Adam
    Nasri

    Tevez
    Berbatov

I dont think anyone could disagree that this team consists of the players who have performed well enough to appear in this list. Gareth Bale does not deserve to get the main award, his best performances were not even in the premier league and he has not been consistent enough to warrant it.... its again a case of media hype. The award belongs to Vidic, Man Utd once again are top of the league and they are doing it with the weakest squad on paper that they have had for a long time.
My biggest disappointment is for Baines. This season he is the second highest assisting defender in europe apart from Dani Alves, how can he possibly be overlooked for the team of the year? Ashley cole has been nothing better than average (for his standards) and Chelsea have had a nightmare season. There needs to be a team of the year awards that actually recognises properly who deserves to be in there because of their positions.
Finally, I hav'nt seen an Everton player in the team of the year for well over a decade. This includes the seasons where Everton finished 4th remarkably against all odds and the two fifth place finishes. The whole idea of the awards are a joke and cant be taken seriously.

  • Comment number 18.

Really not sure about these awards. Firstly the nominations are truly accurate. Van der Vaart firstly had a great start to the season, but I haven't seen him play well in quite a few matches now, and he lacks to be burning out with the pace of the Prem. Bale has been inconsistant. I would've preferred to see these two replaced with Jose Enrique (who has been excellent this season), and Baines, who has been Everton's best player this season, easily.
Would've loved to see the award go to Nani. I can't stand him, he makes the most out of any contact, but when Rooney was going through injury problems, Nani created magic on the pitch. I have no doubt that United wouldn't be where there are now if they didn't have Nani.
Vidic deserves the nomination too, truly excellent defender.

Team of the year confuses me. Berbatov?! He's been dropped! Ashley Cole is no where near what he used to be. It would have been better if the team was picked with a little more imagination, rather than just players from the top 5. Scott Parkers exclusion is a joke.

  • Comment number 19.

    Hi Alistair,

How does voting for team of the year work?
Do the players have to nominate players in specific positions and formation (if so what are they)?
Or do they name their best 11 in whatever formation they like and the PFA counts votes and decides formation?

Also is there a second round of voting for the individual awards after the nominations to pick the winner?

  • Comment number 20.

It's seems strange that some people are saying Bale only produced it in two games against Inter as I seem to remember people calling him 'World Class' before then. This is for the previous year. Bale was outstanding in the run in for spurs last year, scoring the winner against arsenal and chelsea in successive weeks. He had also got into double figures before Christmas. He has not recaptured his form since coming back from injury but still just about shades it in my opinion.

  • Comment number 21.

    Sagna over Seamus Coleman?

    *giggle*

  • Comment number 22.

As a Spurs fan, I don't think Bale should have won. As has been said, he put in a couple of spectacular performances against Inter Milan and since then everybody has been willing to forgive him long strings of anonymous performances and chalk them up to brilliant defending; with no disrespect intended to, say, Gretar Steinsson, I seem to remember Bale achieving nothing of any worth against Bolton without the need for a top-drawer full-back to stop him.

If it had been up to me, I would have given Scott Parker the award and put him in the team of the year. He's been a miracle worker this season and scored some fantastic goals while he was at it. Maybe I'm the only one that thinks this, but he should also be England captain and a regular instead of Gerrard or Lampard, those two perennial underperformers. Scott Parker all the way.

  • Comment number 23.

I thought this was "Premier League Player of the Year" not "two good games against a woeful Internazionale player of the year". It's an absolute joke.

  • Comment number 24.

I'm with you sheffieldharry... drop Lampard, bring on Parker

  • Comment number 25.

Personally, I believe that Bale should not have won the award this year. Despite Burpies' view, Bale has only produced in few games this season, and has been injured a long time. You can look at the end of last season but that it no influence on the PFA Award seeing as the award is for the current season.

Bale, who is a winger, has only contributed 1 assist and 7 goals for Spurs in the Premier League this season. Look at someone like Andrey Arshavin. He has had a poor season on Arsenal's left side, but he has contributed 11 assists and scored 6 goals in the Premier League. On the basis upon which bale was chosen, surely Arshavin should have been considered too?

On a more positive note, Jack Wilshere was a deserving winner of the Young Player Award, but I agree that Nani should have had more of a look in on the award. Barely even a mention.

When it comes to the team of the year, I believe there are a few mistakes. I think Charlie Adam/Van Der Vaart should accompany Nasri in the centre, Leighton Baines should replace Ashley Cole and Hernandez should be up front instead of Berbatov.

@potcfc: Do you really think Seamus Coleman is better than Bacary Sagna, who is arguably the best RB in the league? I would take Sagna, Rafael, Ivanovic and Martin Kelly all ahead of Coleman, especially seeing as COleman has played more on EVerton's wing than at right back for them.

  • Comment number 26.

cant believe that Coleman got nominated over Marc albrighton he had a great seasons and already won villa's fans player of the season? Don't know how bale won player but not young player. Parker should have beat bale for player, he carried west ham and got him self in the England squad which no one thought he could?

  • Comment number 27.

to NedTheNoodler - That's why AC Milan, Inter, Real Madrid, Man Utd etc will all be sniffing around this summer! All on the back of two performances against the same woeful Internationale that are reigning Champions league holders. Did the media and pro's all have crystal balls to be able to rave about him at the end of last season and over last summer on account of what he was going to do in several months time? I know that the memory of the average football fan is short but some people need to actually look back and see what he has done over the last year!

  • Comment number 28.

    Barton?????

  • Comment number 29.

rwsmytharoons:- It's not on the current season only, it's on the last year so the end of last season IS important and is why I think he just about shades it. I agree that if it was on this season alone then he would not. It would be interesting to watch to see how he reacts over the next year to the way teams are playing against him now as to be able to adapt marks a true world class player.

  • Comment number 30.

As a biased Villa fan I'd like to offer a few suggestions to add to the mix:
Namely Stewart Downing, Ashley Young and Darren Bent.

Maybe the later doesn't swear into cameras enough to make the headlines but he sure knows where the back of the net is. He'll end up being top scorer for Villa and Sunderland during the 2010/11 season at this rate !

  • Comment number 31.

Coke over Baines is a genuine disgrace. Full stop.

  • Comment number 32.

    Hart
Ferreira (lol jk) Kompany Vidic Cole
    Nani Nasri Parker Bale
    Tevez Odemwingie

    Berbatov? Is this a joke?

  • Comment number 33.

@Burpies - I apologise, I didn't actually realise that it was over the last year rather than the season (something which I disagree with, as it should be the other way). However, seeing as that is the case then I believe that Scott Parker probably just about edges Bale, as Parker has been consistently good throughout the whole of 2010 and the start of 2011, but Bale was very good at the end of last season so it is very close.

@jeansey123: We are not considering Barton as we all know that he is just too good to be considered for the awards ;). However, I do agree with barton's view that he is better than Gareth Barry, as I believe Gareth Barry is a complete waste of time

  • Comment number 34.

    @17

Completely agree with your choice's for team of the year. Personally I feel Adam or Parker should have won the main award and Nani the young player - although I'm staggered he wasn't even a contender for the main award.

  • Comment number 35.

How about a team excluding the top 5? I think this lot would give the official team a good game:

    Foster
    Carr
    Cahill
    Huth
    Jose Enrique
    Jarvis
    Adam
    Parker
    Pennant
    K Davies
    Odemwingie

  • Comment number 36.

at the risk of repeating what a number of other posters have already said (although it does make me feel slightly more vindicated!) this does seem almost like a farce. Oh, let's pick players from the top clubs, regardless of how they have actually performed, there's NO way a player from a mid or lower table club could possibly get in despite performing consistently well. Baines has has a fantastic season, what has Ashley Cole done? Oh well, he's had a half decent season and he does play for Chelsea we had better vote him, madness. Likewise, im not sure exactly what bacary sagna has done to deserve his inclusion, or how scott parker has missed out. Rant over!

  • Comment number 37.

It's hilarious to read so many bitter comments from Arsenal supporters who are begrudgingly coming to grips with another disappointing, trophyless season.

It seems that every Arsenal season finishes the same way, nothing to celebrate, so they do the next best thing, try to get some relief from their own mediocrity by trying to rain on Tottenham's season. Keep on though we love your sourness, it just proves that it's been another miserable season for you.

  • Comment number 38.

Where is Ashley Young, Charlie Adam, Darren Bent, Stewart Downing, Charles N'Zogbia, Gary Cahill, Kyle Walker, Scott Parker, JAVIER HERNANDEZ, Daniel Sturridge (for young player of the season nominee??) Dawson surely a worthy nominee. Odemwinge & DJ Campbell have had great debut seasons in the prem for their respective clubs. Kuyt's had a good season.

  • Comment number 39.

@WaldoSpur: Someone is clearly just a Spurs fan who cannot take the fact that, in spite of their supposed success, Arsenal have actually had a better season than them (and I am a Newcastle fan, so no bias here). Yes Arsenal have been poor, but that is only by their standards. They went further than Spurs in the FA Cup and they were put out by the best team in the country, they knocked Spurs out of the League Cup at White Hart Lane, they went out of the champions League early, but that is only because they lost to the best team ever (in my opinion), and they are above you in the league. The fact that you are gloating just because your player won PFA Player Of The Year is quite disappointing really

  • Comment number 40.

Wilshere & Bale are great players & have had a great season up until 2011 but have only won the award based on one or games that everybody remembers. Bale vs Inter Milan both legs & the Arsenal comeback. Wilshere vs Barca passing accuracy and completion over 90% which is phenomenal but I feel that there are other players lower down the table that are more deserved of the award. Joey Barton is an outside choice and Jose Enrique or A.Ekoto for the left back spot in team of the year

  • Comment number 41.

Slightly controversial perhaps but in the bigger picture of things I don't think this award is that important.

Sure it's a nice thing to have but at the end of this season Gareth Bale and Jack Wilshere will most likely end up with no trophies whereas Nani may well end up with a Premier League winners medal and, albeit unlikely, a possible Champions League medal; Tevez may well get an FA Cup winners medal.

If I were a player I know which one I'd prefer.

  • Comment number 42.

Not even shortlisted but how many assists has Etherington got this season

  • Comment number 43.

I know it's slightly off topic but I agree with sheffieldharry and paddyc00 that Scott Parker should be an England regular, and does anyone else think it could have been a different story in South Africa last year if he had been? England were never going to win the WC but they would have put up a much better show with him bossing the midfield.

  • Comment number 44.

the awwards are a farce. Bale had a handful of very good games towards the start of the season. Hes not been anywhere near the best player for the season as a whole which is what it should be based on. In fact he wasnt even Spurs best player - Van der Vaart was much better. Bale benefitted from the hype of 2 games against Inter Milan. The first albeit very impressive display was achived after Inter Milan had the game sewn up as well.

The young award should also be an under 21 award. It seems obvious that the other contenders were felt too old for the award despite probably having better seasons than Wilshere.

How Nani didnt get nominated whereas Bale won it shows there is anti foreign bias to it. I dont like Man U or Nani but I can accept he had a far better season than Bale did. You only have to look at the goals and assist stats to see this.

  • Comment number 45.

If the award is player of the YEAR -in this case 2010-, why not make it much earlier in the year 2011? Most award ceremonies simply can't wait to award their end-of-year accolades as soon as possible, so that the appointed champions can "reign" for a full year.

And how about players in the divisional "best teams"? What are the qualifying rules for a player who changed divisions (through promotion / relegation) in the summer, or through either of the transfer windows?

Can anyone throw any light? It's all a little opaque to me.

  • Comment number 46.

How Nani was overlooked for the main award I will never know...actually I already know, he isn't British and therefore the Media aren't in love with him to the same extent that they love Bale (the new Messi, if the media is to be believed).

Leading Assister (7! more than the next highest!!!) and 9 goals in the PL (The 2nd highest of Non-Strikers I believe. Malouda having 1 more.)

  • Comment number 47.

I don't understand how ANY Arsenal defender can get into TOTY. I would've loved to see Nasri win it, but along with Bale has been ordinary as well as inspiring.

I like the point made about Arshavin vs. Bale (25), which makes a bit of a mockery of these awards, as I think Andrey's been awful this season (Barca winner aside!).

    POTS: N/A
    YPOTS: Hernandez
    MOTS: Sir Al

  • Comment number 48.

    Nani 9 goals 18 assists
    Bale 7 goals 3 assists
Van der Vaart 10 goals 7 assists

And people say Bale is a deserving winner. The awards are a farce. Bale isnt even player of his club

    paddyc00 15,
PFA Awards, wat do you think someone rooney care for this award, what do you mean by constructive debate, what people making comments about who should've won, yeah i;ve got a lot who shoud've won the award vidic, kompany not even on the list, but as i was saying PFA award its no biggie, if messi wins an award as best la liga's best player, thats a different case, la liga's standard of players are much higher than primer leauge's,

  • Comment number 50.

Two things that MUST be remembered. This is for the year, not the season and this is voted on by the players themselves and does not have anything to do with the media. That would be the football writers Player of the year.

  • Comment number 51.

All of you complaining about Berbatov being in there... Err, he's the top scorer in the premier league and has 21 goals in 28 appearances, some from the bench.

  • Comment number 52.

@Bj: Totally agree with you that Sir Alex Ferguson should be manager of the season. Hands down. Had Kenny Dalgleish been at Liverpool from Day 1 then I would consider him too, but he hasn't, so S.A.F. is the only choice for me.

On the point about no Arsenal defender being in the team of the year, I disagree. I can't think if a RB in the league this year who has been as good as Sagna on a consistent basis. The arsenal defence confuses me aaa, Squillaci aside, they are all individually very capable, but they just seem to fail when it comes to working together as a unit, which I find very hard to understand. Interesting point, despite Arsenal correctly perceived defensive frailties, they gave actually conceded less goals than Man Utd this season (in the Prem at least)

@badfella0807: The quality of player overall is higher in the Prem than La Liga. Compare the teams. All the Prem teams in the bottom half are better than the majority of the players in La Liga's bottom half

  • Comment number 53.

I was quite surprised not to see Kompany nominated for player of the season after his impressive season. I'm not sure about Sagna, Arsenal's defence is woeful, perhaps Corluka or Zabaleta would have been a better shout there. Finally, I think Joe Hart should have been GK of the year. VDS must be one hell of a keeper to keep Hart and Reina out, considering Hart has kept Given out the city team.

  • Comment number 54.

OptaJoe said: "Gareth Bale has created 43 goalscoring chances in the PL this season, 7 fewer than Simon Davies at Fulham." Not only that, but I'm wondering why Bale is player of the year but not young player of the year?

  • Comment number 55.

Bale isn't a worthy winner at all, he's had a great few months, but this isn't called PFA Player of a Few Months.

Vidic, Parker, Kompany, Adam (and more) were all much worthier.

  • Comment number 56.

berbatov should not be in the team of the year, he clearly showed why with his FA cup performance on saturday.
team of the year should be

    Baines

    Wilshere
    Parker

    Nani

For people to say that the results of these awards are a farce are having a laugh... These awards are decided by the players themselves, and you would hope that they have a good idea about who has impressed them most this year/season. Congrats to Bale and Wilshere, both excellent players. Maybe they wouldn't win the "BBC Bloggers Player of the Year Award", but that's life fellas...

This team of the year reminds me a little bit of somebody's need for a similar thing to BAFTA awards, which is more or less meaningless in football. A nomination for a player of the year should suffice.

For example, is it me thinking that there isn't a holding midfielder in the chosen 11 ?

Jack Wilshere for the young player of the year award would be enough, I think. It's nice to have motivation to achieve things in following years.

It's a pity that you don't see noted players like Parker or Charlie Adam, who have been unsung heroes of small clubs, especially Parker who also impressed with the national side.

Something for the media to play about, really, decided before the run-in, when chips are down and players' inner strengths are counted.

Why not ask Stephen Fry. I suppose he qualifies.

19 manchesterunited4ever As I understand it players have two votes; one for player of the year and one for the young player of the year. That is for all the players at all 92 clubs so it takes a fair while to collate these.

I will need to check the process for the team of the year, although only premier league players can vote for the premier league team and so on down the tiers.

As much as some of you say these awards are a farce, they are voted by the players for the players. That said, the difference between the seven nominations and the team of the year is interesting given that the team is voted for players who come up against those men each week, whereas most of the nominations come from those playing outside the Premier League.

In that case, I wonder why there are no Football League players in the PFA awards. I know that Adel Taarabt won Football League player of the year but why cant he be in the running for PFA player of the year too?

  • Comment number 63.

At 52. I have to scoff at your suggestion that Premier League is still better than La Liga based it seems on the assumption that Wolves are a better team than whoever is propping up La Liga.
    Which incidentally I doubt.
The quality in the Premier League is poor at the moment hence a poor Man UTD squad running away with the league.
The best La Liga has to offer is way better than the best the Prem has to offer.
Look at results Barca v Man Utd/Arsenal, Real Madrid v Tottenham, Zaragoza v Fulham.
Man Utd, Chelsea etc have at best a handful of world class players, Real and Barca each have a team full.

The award should really be voted for at the end of the season and with todays technology it would be hardly difficult. But seeing as the award is for the calender year then Bale fully deserves it, all i've heard is the exaggerate excuse that Bale has only had 2 good games all season. Which is complete rubbish, the media don't exactly help by constantly pointing to the Inter games no matter what the article is about.

Since Bale got back into the team in January last year he has been fantastic for us and his goals against Chelsea and Arsenal in our end of season run were critical for us as we finished 4th. He then had a brilliant start to the season scoring a wonder goal against Stoke and having arguably even better performances against Young boys and Twente pretty much having a hand in all the goals. If Bale had some better strikers ahead of him he would also have far more assists too.

If this award was about the season then I'd give it to Parker hands down, he practically carries his team and has been consistantly brilliant all season. I was surprised Nani wasn't even nominated but as this is voted for by his fellow players perhaps they find him as annoying as a lot of fans do, exculding Man Utd fans of course.

    @63, Uncle Walt,

you forget two important details about La Liga:

    a) uneven distribution of TV money allows two clubs to prosper;
    b) the Premier League has a number of top sides and much more derby matches.

In the end of the day, people need to decide what they want: cheap players' acquisitions or big names playing in the Premiership? You can't have both.

  • Comment number 66.

I agree with many others that Bale does not deserve the player of the YEAR award, he has been magical at times, of course, but i think he has been too inconsistent to win it. To be honest im very surprised Modric was overlooked even for the nominees, in my opinion he is world class.

As for the team of the year I think there are a handful of players i would have had instead of Berbatov, in particular Hernandez, granted I am not a big fan of Berbatov but i dont think im being unfair with that.

  • Comment number 67.

Parker? Adam? Why weren't player's like Matt Jarvis? Charles N'zogbia? or Chris Brunt? nominated? Just show's how poor the Premiership has been this season. Hernandez and Nani are probably gonna end up winning a trophy or 2 which in my opinion is worth more than any PFA award.

The players get the voting forms and go "right, who are we voting for this year lads? We need a rightback....who plays for Arsenal? He'll do. Now I'm off for a round of golf / to an ex Big Brother contestant's house....."

I reckon 7 out of this 11 will be in the team of the year again next season barring injuries/moving abroad.....

Why is Coleman at rightback when he's played right mid for most of the season?

  • Comment number 70.

If anyone seriously believes that Bale deserves his award for the SEASON then you need to watch cricket or petanque instead. He was good for ONE game against Milan and was so bad against Everton he was subbed. Phil Neville had to have an operation to remove him rom his back pocket.

Players such as DJ Campbell, Odemwingle, David Vaughan, Coleman, Carson, Huth, Albrighton, Assou-Ekotto, Barton, Distin etc never get a mention but have been superb for a lot of this season

  • Comment number 71.

Nani and Malouda were unstoppable towards back end of last seaon with Malouda dropping off and Nani carrying on his good form right into 2011. How he wasn't even nominated is madness

    -------
I think that's the thing that makes me surprised at Nani's omission more from the player noms. Nani was brilliant at the end of the year last year and got 4 goals and 7 assists in his last 12 games (11 starts, 1 sub) in all comps.

(Bale as an aside got 3 goals, 4 assists, though played 3 of the 12 at fullback)

  • Comment number 72.

Nobody stood out 2 me for that right back spot so I went for Coleman for the season his had plus his done well for me in my Fantasy League were he plays right back.

I do not agree with Bale being given this award at all! what has he done apart from have to impressive games against a very average Inter Milan team. If I had given this award to anyone it would of been Charlie Adam at Blackpool. He has been outstanding for them this season. Also another outstanding player this year has been Scott Parker at West Ham. He has been the heart and sole of that football club and is single handerly trying to keep them in the top division of English football. I can't believe people are also saying that Gareth Bale is world class. There is no way he is world class. He's a very good player granted but world class is completely over the top!
My team of the year would consist of these:

    Hart

    Sagna Vidic Kompany Baines

    Wilshere Parker

    Nani Adam Nasri

    Tevez.

Most of, if not all of these players have been consitant over the entire season. Gareth Bale doesn't get into my team because of the fact he has not been consistant over the entire season, only in bits and bobs!

  • Comment number 79.

I don't understand how Leighton Baines did not even get a nomination. He had an absolutely fantastic season. He did a lot more than Ashley Cole and he got into the Team of the Year just because of his name value. Bit ridiculous I think.

    My Team of the Year

    Van der Sar

    Coleman
    Vidic
    Kompany
    Baines

    Nani
    Wilshere
    Yaya Toure
    Bale

    Tevez
    Berbatov

I guess this award confirms that this has not been a vintaage EPL year (or season - same difference really although the point is well made in the article).
Previous winners last ten years are..
    01 Teddy Sheringham
    02 Ruud Van Nistelrooy
    03 Theirry Henry
    04 Theirry Henry
    05 John Terry
    06 Steven Gerrard
    07 Christiano Renaldo
    08 Christiano Renaldo
    09 Ryan Giggs
    10 Wayne Rooney
.. and not much room for complaint with any of them considering the contributions they made.
My pick would have been Vidic. Bale, as has been pointed out by other posts is not even the MVP for Spurs this season and Tevez is probably more worthy of place among the elite list above then any other player in the EPL.
On a positive note I do not think you could ever have a more derserving YPY than Jack Wilshere 19 years old and breaking through to become a lead inclusion at both club and international level. I hope this spurs (unfortunate pun) him on to greatness although he needs to add 20 plus goals a season if he is destined to win the senior award.

  • Comment number 82.

90% of these comments have completely missed the fact that this is an award voted by players, not fans. And as much as we all like to think we know a lot about football, the players know more, as they actually play against each other. So the fact that Gareth Bale has been voted for, by players, the most times means that he deserves the award.

And at 63. Uncle Walt...The premiership is better than La Liga! Ok this year the top teams haven't performed as well as they should have, ill give you that, but La Liga is unbalanced, its 2 teams for the title every year (even though Man Utd and Chelsea are the only 2 teams to have won the title in a while, Arsenal aren't as far away every year as 3rd place Spanish team). Its almost as bad as the Rangers and Celtic dominance in the SPL. Another thing that gets overlooked is the amount of diving, acting etc that Spanish teams have in abundance. Im not saying it doesn't happen a lot in the Premiership, because it does, but no way near as ridiculous. Every El Classico looks like it will kick off any second, you see as much handbags in them than good football (think about that people when you watch the next 3 coming up). And just because the top 2 teams in La Liga are better than the top 2 in the Premiership means nothing. At the end of the season if you played La Liga's 1 to 20 against their respective positions in the Premiership, no doubt the Premiership would have more winning teams. There were 3 Premiership teams in QF's of Champions League, and only 2 from La Liga...I could go on for hours about why Premiership is the best league in the world. So far, there have been 898 goals in the Premiership this season, compared to 798 in La Liga, that's an extra 100 goals that we've enjoyed. To sum up...more goals, more competition, more excitement.

  • Comment number 83.

Even though the award is voted by fellow players, only the ones in the Premier League (barring the FA Cup & League Cup) have played against them so even though people are saying 'it's the players who vote, not the fans', the majority of the votes are from people who haven't played against them. Surely they could be classed as fans as well. I'm sure there are some general fans who know a lot more about football than some of the players in the lower leagues as well (even the Premier League!).

My opinion is that neither should have won their awards. I think they both are very promising young players, but have they really played better (and contributed more to their team) than the likes of Parker, Vidic, Adam, Hernandez, Nani etc... I don't think either of them have. I am sitting on the fence between Parker and Vidic for Player of the Year and I would say Hernandez for young player or Nani (who was somehow left out of Player of the Year). I'd probably go with Parker and Nani.

However, another flaw is the fact that the award is very rarely given to a defensive player. I think that perhaps a system that awards the best in their respected position would be good. How can you compare the likes of Parker and Vidic or Nani and Hernandez. My example would be: Hernandez has scored a lot of goals in his first season, but a lot of those assists are from Nani, who gains an assist when a player like Hernandez scores. You just can't compare them, they need each other to work.

That is a reason why a lot of people don't really care that much. Football is a team game and although individuals can really bring a lot to their team, they need each other to bring the best out of themselves.

Bale showed amazing form in the 2009 calender year. His performances from the second half of last season to the 1st half of this season make him a worthy winner in my eyes. Thats the way I would vote. I 2nd that Chicharito should have won the Young Player too.

"I understand that concern but it's not a team competition," PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor explained to BBC Sport. "It's nothing to do with who has won the Premier League, the FA Cup or the Champions League."
Does Mr Taylor think that we fans will be swayed into voting for an individual who has had a less impressive season simply because his team won a competition? That's rather insulting to my intelligence.
His other reason why the vote is in March is so it doesn't clash with another awards ceremony. So he's more interested in preserving the egos of his journalistic friends than a fair voting system? Hhhmmmmm. I wonder if we should ask the Football Writers if they'd mind having the PFA awards AROUND the same time? I can't think there'd be much complaint surely.

  • Comment number 89.

Well if your quotes are accurate then there is no wonder there is a lot of misunderstanding when the players own chief executive can't accurately describe the reason there is confusion

"PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor explained to BBC Sport. "It's nothing to do with who has won the Premier League, the FA Cup or the Champions League.

It's simply the view of the fellow professionals on which player has had an outstanding season."

He clearly should have said "year" not "season". as your initial quote said: "Tottenham's Gareth Bale picked up the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year award on Sunday, while Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere was named Young Player of the (Calendar) Year.

To be consistent the PFA should either make the award in January, right after the calendar year or should make it in late may early june right after the season.

  • Comment number 90.

Not really sure what all the complaints about nani not being on the list or parker missing out. The awards are voted for by the players, so it is just a popularity contest. Perhaps the other players just don't like nani and parker. After all nani does fall over everytime the wind blows!

  • Comment number 91.

Bale, PFA player of the yr and then Wilshere young player of the year. This indeed is questionable. But the deciders know best.

  • Comment number 92.

Some players have been massively overlooked. Van Der Sar? Agree that the guy is a top keeper, but the likes of Al-Habsi and Foster (maybe biased, but this guy has been better for us than Hart was last season) particularly are putting in top performances every week, and I'm guessing they have a lot more to deal with than the likes of Van Der Sar and Cech.

Can't believe the likes of Downing, Baines, Carr, Odemwingie, Brunt, Etherington, Nolan, Roger Johnson, Albrighton, Sturridge, Coleman, etc. have all been overlooked, but I guess they don't play for the fashionable clubs.

  • Comment number 93.

Being a calendar year award, it takes two halves of two different seasons. So, players who move on don't count. Newcomers to the premiership, for the same reason, don't count. New players to a club, when coming from another league, don't have the full picture on who they could have faced if they were in the club the prior season too. And players that leave clubs to other leagues don't count as they have missed the second half of the matches that count towards voting.

A right mess. Sums it up.

  • Comment number 94.

Stephen Carr has had a cracking season for Birmingham, considering this is a player who retired two seasons ago!

Etherington has played superb all season for Stoke and got them to a final of the FA Cup.

Berbatov and Tevez are only there because of the amount of goals scored but neither have played amazing this season.

Parker has basically been a one man team for West Ham and if he hadn't of featured for them this season I think them may well be relegated already!

Anyways, here's My Team of the season (so far!):-

    -----------------------Hart---------------------

    Carr-----Kompany---------------Vidic------Baines

    ----------------------Parker---------------------

    Nani-----------------------------------Etherington

    ---------------------Wilshere--------------------

    -------------Tevez-------------Berbatov---------

  • Comment number 95.

Team of the Year - picked by Premier League players

Player of the year - picked by all 92 football league clubs

So from this you would have to assume that Parker, Adam etc are rated by fellow professionals but not necessarily those that have actually played against them. This may also be where we the fans fail when questioning certain omissions. Either that or the Premeir League players are voting for the major stars and their buddies.

One question out of interest though - is it all squad members that take part is this vote. It leads to an (un)interesting point that maybe not everybody that votes for team of the year has actually played against those who they have voted for.

  • Comment number 96.

Although I beleive Bale has had a good season - especially before Christmas - based on statistics, you can't argue with the fact that some players have delivered more for their teams:

    https://www.myfootballfacts.com/Premier_League_Combined_2010-11.html

Nani comes out top for combined goals and assists

  • Comment number 97.

Personally think Scott Parker should have won it, a player who has had to work hard to get noticed all his career and has been absolutely top quality. How it took him so long to get into England contention I don't know but he has been the best player in the league this season for me. When you look at some of the goals he has scored and tackles he has made in a team much worse than Spurs it is incredible, he doesn't have the benefit of players like Modric (who I would have also put above Bale.) Still, congratulations to the lad he is finally fulfilling the promise he showed at Soton.

Hi Football_UK at #93. Thank you. Was that the answer to my question raised in point #45?
Or was that you asking the same question, just by showing how mixed-up and "opaque" it is?

  • Comment number 99.

Even as a Liverpool fan I agree with Baines over Cole, he has torn teams apart at times this season. In fact didn't he do it vs Chelsea? I think Wilshere was good value for young player over Chicarito, if Bale pretty much won the player of the year award for his performances vs Inter, (lets face it he has same goals and one less league assist as Jermaine Beckford) then Wilshere being Arsenal's best player vs Barca (who are so far beyond the current Inter team it's not funny) has to rank up there as just as good a performance.

  • Comment number 100.

Ah opinions, opinions - everyone's got one, right? If you read the article it quite clearly sums up the confusion of an award over a calender year encompassing 2 different seasons... and correctly suggesting that we shouldn't get bogged down by recent events.
So - everyone gets very uppity because Ashley Cole is in the 'team'. Erm - get over yourselves people. Does it really matter? However, just to qualify... least goals conceded 2010/11 season to date, Chelsea. Jan to May 2010... Chelsea win the double. Unreasonable to have a Chelsea defender in the team? Prefer John Terry? Come on engage brains!
