Kenny's cup-winning Reds at a crossroads
If at the beginning of this first full season of the second coming of Kenny Dalglish at Anfield you had asked Liverpool fans whether they would take a trophy and European qualification, I fancy most would have reckoned on that being a very decent outcome.
Liverpool achieved both those goals in one afternoon by winning the Carling Cup last Sunday.
Now, what will the rest of the season hold?
In some ways, Liverpool are at a crossroads. The FA Cup is a very enticing prospect, with a home quarter final against Stoke City, no Manchester United, Manchester City or Arsenal in their way - and no guarantee that Chelsea will make the last eight either.
But a return to the Champions League would be the most significant achievement of all.
This campaign is beginning to bear some real similarities with the 2001 season when Liverpool used the momentum of cup wins, which came thick and fast, to squeeze qualification for the Champions League for the first time under its new name.
And, just as then, their push started with a League Cup final win on penalties against Championship opposition......for Birmingham City in 2001, read Cardiff City now.

In those days, only three English teams qualified for the Champions League. But, once the League Cup had been won, Liverpool successfully juggled Uefa Cup and FA Cup quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals with their last dozen league games to make up ground on the top teams and pip Leeds United to third place on the last day of the season.
This time have Liverpool have no European fixtures to contend with, but more ground to make up in the league.
They are seventh, seven points behind both Arsenal and Chelsea and four behind Newcastle but with a game in hand (against Everton) on them all.
Maybe the freedom and confidence of a first trophy since 2006 will allow them to take off the shackles and turn draws into wins, especially at home?
After all, if they miss out on the Champions League this time, future qualification is only likely to get harder for Liverpool. Chelsea and Arsenal are vulnerable at the moment in a way they may not be next season. Neither have found any consistent form and both may strengthen considerably in the summer.
Certainly Chelsea have a spending power which Liverpool could not live with and, who knows, manager Arsene Wenger may even take the padlocks off the Arsenal purse strings.
It's hard to gauge which way Spurs will go if Harry Redknapp leaves, but they will obviously be a force, while the two Manchester clubs would seem to have places at the top table more or less guaranteed and Newcastle will be hoping that they can build on their considerable achievements so far this season.
There is also the possibility that any more poor years in the Champions League could see the Premier League's quota cut back to three clubs.
If that were to happen than Liverpool's hopes of being on the inside of the gravy train looking out rather than the outside looking in would look slimmer again. That's why I say Liverpool are at a crossroads.
For Kenny's men, the League Cup was a start and the FA Cup would be fantastic, but the remaining 13 league games are crucial. They start with Arsenal coming to Anfield on Saturday and, if Liverpool are to close that seven-point gap, that's almost a must-win match.

With regard the blog, I really don't see Liverpool getting 4th with the players that Dalglish has brought in (bar Suarez and Enrique), the British contingent of the team are not of enough quality to push for a CL spot.
Looks like if the owners really want CL back, they are going to have to splash more cash. Let's hope Dalglish doesn't buy another £35 million flop with it though!

But these days they have to field their strongest team and still end up being at the same level as a team that sits 6th in the Championship - only difference was being fitness level

Kenny has done really well to win a cup and as a motivator of players and getting his teams playing good football he is up there with the best managers in the league, but as a buyer of players he has been terrible since he came back with only Suarez and Enrique really being worth anything like what he paid for them.

Clear out Henderson entirely, bring in another decent striker to back up Suarez and Carroll and if another good central midfielder becomes available then bring him in for Adam. Fourth spot might be too much for this season but with some tinkering, next season could be very good.

What has Kenny done that has been racist? He has supported a player because he strongly believes that he is not racist. Are you lot seriously saying you'll let FA commissions make every opinion for you? Suarez would not have been found guilty by a court as Evra's account was as inconsistent, if not more, than his. This is why Kenny has backed Suarez. It is a simple matter of sticking to your principles and backing a person you believe wrongly accused. None of you commenting have read the FA Report on the Suarez case so please shut up.
Now onto the real matter, Kenny has made considerable progress and it really is a project he has right now. We have achieved success for the first time in 6 years, and are in a very good position to achieve even more success. 4th would be the icing on the cake in a very tough and close league at the moment.

Am sure that those inside the club from top to bottom are quite aware of the problems that exist and attempting to move it forward into CL qualification.
Myself like many grounded LFC supporters at the start of the season would accept the situation we now have as the final outcome for the season.
However, that doesn't stop you from wishing or hoping for a little more. And why not? If you don't continually readjust expectations upwards after any achievements, why bother in the first place.
Unlike, many other of the clubs supporters I don't see the the LFC world through rose-tinted glasses, with wild expectations of hitting the heights of former glory. These possibilities can only regained (if at all) by steady progress over a number of seasons. Something which am sure that the current owners, management and senior playing staff understand.
As a result of which, I would be more than happy to see considered re-investment in the club at all levels take place gradually, rather than hot-house force it by throwing huge amounts at it that produce very little.
Yes, let's see if CL qualification is possible by giving it a good push in what remains of this season, and maybe reaching another Wembley Final.
There is no way that LFC or the majority of EPL clubs can follow the Galactico formula to achieve success. Instead it has to built upon from a more pragmatic approach.
Who knows what the future holds? That's what makes it interesting.

KD has been in the job 13 months. In that time he has managed to shift all the dross bought by Woy, has won a trophy and guaranteed some sort of European football for next season. The club has clearly improved in his brief tenure, maybe not as much as we'd hoped but KD has my 100% support because I am a Liverpool supporter! There are plenty of fans of other teams who love to knock us, as is their right but I believe in getting behind my team and giving them time to be successful or not. Carroll I feel for; if what was required was an impact player for the last 20 mins or a "presence" up front then frankly Crouch, Pavyluchenko or Holt would have done for much less money. Good player, wrong team (much like the man he replaced funnily enough). As for Newcastle, they must be laughing their heads off; Ba and Cisse plus still change from the deal...
Henderson was bought one assumes as a box to box midfielder who can also play wide and get 10 goals a season. Needless to say proven "Roy Keane"/"Freddie Ljunberg"/"Gary Speed"/"Tim Cahill" types are in short supply, particularly in our leagues. He is still young and may benefit from a loan. However, he doesn't look likely to emulate the above names. Personally I would have had a look at Gardener or Morrison...again same player for half the cost.
Adam had a great season in an attacking side who often played on the break. He perhaps needs a season to adapt to side expected and under more pressure to win; just like Lucas and Alonso.
He hasn't got that yard of pace that would help him carry the ball and doesn't ever seem to get into the box. We need to beat Arsenal & Chelsea at home to have any chance. If I had to put money on it I would say we will miss out.
To compare the players Woy bought (Konchesky, Poulsen, Cole) with KD's as being equally dross is imho ridiculous. Sure Carroll, Downing and Henderson have been disappointing but they need time. As I said earlier I cannot abide writing players off so quickly. Kenny is a great man and a great manager still finding his feet in the PL. And, irrespective of how it was done, the important thing is, he has won a trophy in his first season. Our big problem this season in the PL is not taking our chances, especially at home. Kenny knows this and I'm sure he'll do all he can to put that right.
We still have the FA Cup to come. No doubt if we come up against a lower league club in the final and win on pens, those same 'fans' will be back once more saying we failed again. Oh well..

The fact is, Liverpool have the most ordinary team I have seen in donkeys years. I was not surprised at all when Benitez was basically given the boot, but that team oozed class compared to the mediocrity Dalglish has assembled now.
Even the King of Misery himself cannot complain about a lack of funds; his superiors gave him the Torres money, only for him to blow it on a big geordie boozer. He got his priority midfield signings in Adam and Downing, so no excuses on that front.
His best performers have been Skrtel and Kuyt, two very underrated players. But Kenny inherited both of them. People criticise Roy Hodgson, but not even his team was as lacklustre to watch as Dalglish's side. Should Liverpool (miraculously) qualify for the CL, they will need to massively strengthen their squad in midfield. It's not a lack of strikers, it's a lack of quality balls forward from midfield areas. Oh, and a dour manager stuck in 1995.

Of course it won't, it's completely irrelevent! Birmingham won it last year and they got relegated. Fair play to Liverpool for winning it of course, and yes it is an achievement, but I can't remember a deluge of articles this time last year from a host of pundits and ex Birmingham players seeing it as some kind of 'crossroads'.
The reaction of the BBC to Liverpool's Carling Cup win is another shining example of the network's obsession with the formerly great club. Fair enough, in the early years of the Premier League the amount of coverage Liverpool received may have been warranted due to previous success, but come on, they haven't won the league for over 20 years!
Don't get me wrong I've no dislike for Liverpool Football Club, which of course is one of England most historically successful and internationally recognised teams, but it is so clear to see from every liverpool supporter and non-supporter that they are an absolute million miles away from competing with Man City and Man Utd, and have failed to break into the top four in a season in which both Arsenal and Chelsea have been incredibly average.
So please, let's have some proper debate: who's going to win the Premier League? Why won't Arsenal spend any money? What's Newcastle's stadium called? Anything but more Liverpool.

While I don't think Roy did a great job at Liverpool I am not sure how much better he could have done given the resources at his disposal. Plus over the previous few transfer windows several key players had been sold to pay that debt added to need to freshen up squad anyway (Gerrard picking up more niggles means not guaranteed to be fit for every game like before, Carragher aging too).
