CHI 2013: Changing Perspectives will be held in Paris from the 27th of April to the 2nd of May 2013

A few of us at BBC R&D have been working on how to exploit the increasingly rich range of interactive functionality now available though Internet connected 'smart' televisions in order to enhance the way in which audience members interact with our programmes. Last year at the CHI conference, we presented our work in the form of a long case study paper called 'Researching the user experience for Connected TV'. At the same conference we took part in a Special Interest Group meeting hosted by Google focused on 'Designing for the living room TV experience'. This year Google and the BBC are co-organising a one day workshop on 'Exploring and enhancing the user experience for Television'. The workshop will be held as part of the CHI 2013 program on the 27th of April in Paris, France. We would like to invite academics and practitioners experienced in this topic to submit a position paper plus a short bio by the 18th of January 2013 in order to participate in the workshop. Information on how to submit your contribution is available here.

Your position paper should attempt to address one or more of the following themes:

  • Remotes
  • Content Discovery and Engagement on Companion Screens
  • Discovery of Devices
  • Social Network and User Generated Content
  • Personalisation and Recommendations

Our workshop seeks to increase the volume and quality of HCI research and innovative practice around user interfaces for television. Internet connectivity is driving a rapid increase in the range and scope of interactive experiences on the TV platform and it represents an exciting new opportunity for developing new HCI practice and methodology, as well as innovative forms of user experience. Through this workshop we hope to:

  • Share current research and practice to foster and strengthen a community of researchers in this field
  • Develop an ambitious research agenda to enhance user experience and HCI/User-centred practices in this field
  • Promote TV experiences and interfaces as a distinctive and important theme for HCI researchers by presenting exciting work from this field

Further details on the themes of the workshop, method of submission, important deadlines and organisers can be found at the workshop website. We look forward to seeing you at CHI this year.
