New swimsuit technology has helped a number of swimming records tumble in recent weeks.

But Inge de Bruijn's 100m butterfly record, set at the 2000 Games in Sydney, is still standing.

In the heats, she brought the Olympic mark down from 58.62 seconds to 57.60 and in the final went 0.99 seconds faster to set a new world best of 56.61.

In all, De Bruijn knocked two seconds off the previous Olympic mark set by China's Hong Qian at the 1992 Barcelona Games.

De Bruijn also won the gold medals in the 50m and 100m freestyle and picked up a silver in the 4x100m freestyle relay race.
