French Finance Minister Francois Baroin has become the latest senior figure in Paris to criticise weaknesses in the British economy.
Earlier the chairman of the French central bank suggested that the UK's credit rating should be downgraded - ahead of France.
Tonight we look at what lies behind these extraordinary attacks.
Also we look back at the life of author, literary critic and journalist Christopher Hitchens has died at the age of 62.
And David Grossman looks back across the political year.
This is our last programme of year - we return on Tuesday 3rd January 2011.

It must be worse than we thought. For someone with his record in 'False Witness' (and infringement of Commandments that doesn't stop there) he is 'playing with Fire' - if you get my drift.
Or might he have more than a touch of Blairitis? There is no cure - it just gets more pronounced with time. You know the symptoms.

Anyone sense a parallel with the Westminster allowances distraction? A token cleansing left a culturally corrupt Westminster untouched.
With the focus on dementia patients, the TRUTH that a SICKNESS SERVICE staffed by GRADUATES AND DRONGOS (who won't or can't relate to the patients) is just as 'ready' to neglect stroke patients, and the SIMPLY OLD, might just be missed.

It is both humane and ECONOMIC. Those of us who can see the blessed dark at the end of the tunnel of questionable existence, are daily more aware of just how long the 'uncaring profession' can keep us alive, in answer to a perversity that passeth all understanding. (And now Dave has gone Christian!)
We are born animal, and if MADE TO LIVE TOO LONG, we die animal - nothing is left of the human. Just how many times must it be repeated: "YOU WOULD NOT DO IT TO A DOG", and how many times: "IF YOU DID YOU WOULD BE LOCKED UP"?
I am 74. A mystery virus took a bite out of me in the Summer - I can't take too many of those, without loss of functionality. THERE ARE MANY, MANY LIKE ME, mostly terrified that ‘the machine’ will take charge, and REBUFF ALL FAMILY INPUT.

However, Baroin and Noyer are either dissembling, or don't get it. The euro crisis is a result of the attempt by the ECB to create a new quasi gold standard, effectively repeating the mistakes of the past. If the ECB had the mandate, the courage and the wisdom to support the euro, this crisis would end soon and the natural economic strength of the EU and eurozone would leave the UK and US behind. But this would involve being honest about the causes of the current crisis.
The bankers and Frau M in particular would rather be righteous failures, than admit that they got it wrong. Zombie ideas have eaten their brains, and are consuming the body economic of Europe:

Fewer and fewer people are watching. Talking and debating about the crisis seems less and less relevent, most people sense that and are entirely dismissive and apathetic to the established political process. A type of anarchistic response I suppose when faced with a system which has lost the respect of the people it is supposed serve.
NN won't take on the establishment, they are part of it, although it does display a degree of intellectual integrity which keeps its content above the moral poverty line on balance and for that I am grateful.
If I may offer a crumb of comfort if anyone on NN production team actually reads this stuff anymore, it is quite an achievement along with the world service it is the BBC's Alamo. But we all know how that story ends.
The dynamic has moved out of the intellectual sphere, out of the sphere of NN or the EP or Westminster or the ECB or the BoE. A triumph of cleverness over wisdom, cleverness is actually just intellectualised violence and until it is treated as such not much will change.
That is the que for the next stage and the reason why I dont really contribute in this sphere anymore... the time has passed when it could have made a difference.
It now moves onto the physical stage, the bit where mother nature rolls her sleeves up and 'gets serious' in order to redress an imbalance in the self regulating system she unconsciously presides over.
How that will be manifested one can only guess at this stage but in general terms, with the whole system so fragile there will be a focal point a 'Lehmans' type moment, big enough to set off a chain reaction. Unlike the Lehmans moment, the system is no longer strong enough to cut off a cascade effect from the focal point and one event will set off several others allready precariously in a metastable state until the stored energy contained within it is all burned up.
What will be left after that process is done ... who knows.
2012 will be a year which will be much talked about by generations to come.
Fare ye well.

THE MINISTERIAL CODE
Foreword by
The Prime Minister
Our new government has a particular and historic responsibility: to rebuild
confidence in our political system. After the scandals of recent years, people have
lost faith in politics and politicians. It is our duty to restore their trust. It is not enough simply to make a difference. We must be different.
We have promised the people a coalition government united behind the key
principles of freedom, fairness and responsibility. Every day of this government we must make good on that promise, acting in a way that reflects these principles.
In everything we do – the policies we develop and how we implement them, the
speeches we give, the meetings we hold – we must remember that we are NOT MASTERS BUT SERVANTS. (my emphasis.) Though the British people have been disappointed in their politicians, they still expect the highest standards of conduct. We must not let them down.
We must be different in how we think and how we behave. We must be different from what has gone before us. Careful with public money. Transparent about what we do and how we do it. Determined to act in the national interest, above improper influence. Mindful of our duty. Above all, grateful for our chance to change our country.

This is a question of core values & as most eloquently expressed by Michael Portillo on Any Questions this lunch-time on Radio 4.
Most of what many thing is wrong with UK & indeed ROW is indeed considered in the bible - no other book, religion or system of values addresses all of the issues we now face, except the Bible and Christian tradition.
Having special words for those of other faiths as is the case with some religions should not be not acceptable either in a secular or pluralist society as based on Christian values.
Having Christian values is the essence of our Church of England - British identity as is non-extremist & non-intrusive - this is the same as what BBC preaches around the world at our licence payer expense & then denies its source & application?

Hmm - you must have more or less unlimited knowledge to be able to make a sweeping statement like that.
Of course hubris and blinkeredness amongst politicians is nothing new: Did not the blessed Tony lecture the Pope upon gay rights, and immediately after his conversion, whereas he himself neglected to consider "Thou Shalt Not Kill".
Dave has probably misread his Bible. It doesn't actually say "Jesus saw the money lenders in the temple & said, 'You lot deserve a bonus! Now, let's make the poor poorer in order to pay for it'. " It said "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God." (Matthew 19:24). I'm sure that the man from Ystradgynlais is both better read and more in touch than the stockbroker's son from Berkshire.
There is a dilemma: does one choose "Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit." (Proverbs 26:5) or instead "Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him." (Proverbs 26:4) Dave and Tony's many crass statements will continue to return to haunt them.
"The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,
Moves on: not all your Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all your Tears wash out a Word of it. ..............(Omar Khayyamm)
As for Britain "not being a pagan country", one of my favourite carols is 'The Boar's Head', commemorating the Norse God Freyr, and his golden-bristled wild-boar steed, Gullinbursti. There are many many more examples of this, but I won't go on. As it says in Ecclesiastes (1:18) "...in much wisdom there is much grief: he that increaseth knowledge, increaseth sorrow."
Ah well, I shall take refuge in 1 Timothy (5:23) "Drink no longer water, but take a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities."

Christianity takes the name of its founder - the SON OF GOD - at least half divine. Other religions, even those who acknowledge the one god, are founded by prophets, to which they also demote Jesus. THEY CANNOT REACH THE FATHER.

Hitchens was clearly articulate, but I guess you would expect that from him considering he was a 'words-man'. However his political views seemed rather confused and contradictory. He came across as a rather arrogant man in my opinion.
Watching the re-run of the interview last night and taking into consideration much of what has recently been posted by brown-dog, virtually all of Hitchens' entire political philosophy became clear. At the end of the interview he claimed to still be a socialist….IMHO he wasn't. He was clearly just another political anarchist just as his hero George Orwell was. Remember, the Bankers and their political puppets and the rest of the elite establishment are anarchists/deregulators who have taken over our system of democracy purely for their own financial/power gain. At the end of the day Hitchens was a supporter of them and not YOU.

I often refer to 'demon driven' individuals - especially politicians. To me, Christopher Hitchens had been SUBSUMED by his demons, such that his perversity of positioning knew no bounds. The brothers Hitchin left me keen to know the kind of childhood they shared . . .
But I shall always treasure Hitchens C's public de-trousering of Blair, even though I should know better. Poor Tony is being CONsumed by his demons! It must be Hell in there.

Hitchens described himself as being a Marxist and a socialist in his early life and then gradually moving to the right, though remaining a socialist (!?!). He also stated that he had a huge dislike for diactatorships and the fascist-like radicals in the Muslim religion, as well as all other religions, though his emphasis was on the Muslim religion following 9/11. He went on to say that the freedom/emancipation of the women's movement was of paramount importance in a so-called 'civilised' society.
He really didn't respond at all when Paxman confronted him with the fact that he was viewed by many of his old liberal friends on the left as having turned into a Neocon in recent years i.e. being pro the Bush administration and the US being right in prosecuting the War-on-Terror in the ME.
If you look him up on his Wiki page it states he is from Jewish ancestry, if so, then this would certainly explain his high verbal intelligence i.e. being extremely articulate. As brown-dog has stated that this is a sign of feminine brain gender that is prevalent in those from Jewish backgrounds. He certainly was not a socialist in the Stalinist/Chinese sense. I believe he was more Trotskyite/Libertarian in the same way that Blair/Mandelson were in New Labour were and also Thatcher/Joseph were in their Neocon Conservatism (note how both parties were aligned with the Neocon libertarians Murdoch/Stelzer and their political agency in the UK - News International). Hitchens may not have believed he was a Neocon (though debatable following 9/11) but he could certainly be described as a Neoliberal. In the interview he spoke of feeling as though he was born in the wrong country (he was born in the UK of course) and that the US had been a 'draw' to him from a very early age, eventually moving there and becoming a US citizen. He was obviously attracted to the freedoms of the US and it's deregulatory environment. He certainly didn't move there for its socialist values and workers rights I guess. He was quite clearly a cosmopolitan aka an International Socialist that many from the Jewish communities are.
There's a thread in there you know.

You will hate me for saying this...but what I wrote in #61 doesn't matter whether I'm Jewish or not!
This is exactly what JJ et al constantly explained...i.e. don't play the man, play the ball.
Disabuse/abuse doesn't matter...if JJ et al was correct, they were saying that certain groups have certain characteristics. That is a fact. Why should anyone highlighting that fact make them a member of that group? I suspect that JJ et al comes from a scientific background, like my self. We are TRAINED not to believe ANYTHING UNLESS it is proven by scientific experiment or research. In fact I consider what you write on these very blogs as simple rhetoric, unless you can clearly state its validity by experimentation or peer reviewed research. Do you understand that basic principle?
For example...tonight there is a very dubious programme on C4 tonight about abuses of peoples in Syria's 'torture machine (many of those being interviewed seem to me to be young arab female activists)...how much of this programme is based on forensic scientific fact or how much of it based on simple propaganda based on journalistic suspect. How many journalists are trained on the rigours of scientific reasearch?
I'll give you the answer...not very many (unless that is they are politically motivated)

Just how has the phrase 'socialist' been distorted in the c20th?
What exactly were the Nazis portrayed as?
Remember the word 'NAZI' comes from the German phrase 'NAtionalsoZIalismus'.
This means socialism IN ONE COUNTRY....why is this ideology demonised by International Socialism?
WHO loses out from this form of NATIONAL socialism?

I hear the OED is routinely culling words no longer used by the now cohort, in the today space (in and of itself) going forward.
I still hold the view that the configuration of the individual mind is where control of the mass lies, not in regulation and mechanism.
Words we can expect to disappear: virtue, integrity, altruism, honour, trust, humility, dignity, and some more, so little used, that I can't call them to mind!

He was the symbol of 1989, the anti-communist playwright who helped free his country – and the rest of eastern Europe – from Stalinist tyranny and who put the countries that lay behind the iron curtain on the road to democracy.
So goes the dominant narrative of the life of Václav Havel, the former Czech president, who died on Sunday aged 75. Havel, we are told, was a hero and one of the greatest Europeans of our age.
But, as with the recent consecration of Christopher Hitchens, another "progressive" opponent of the communist regimes of eastern Europe who found favour with Washington's neocons, there is another side to the story.

"A 2008 book by historians from the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), Sławomir Cenckiewicz and Piotr Gontarczyk, presenting new evidence, received substantial coverage in the media, provoked a hot nation-wide debate, and was noted by the international press. The book is seen by some as very controversial; however, it contains over 130 pages of documents from archives of the secret police (which were inherited by the IPN) to support its claims, and Cenckiewicz defended his discoveries on a factual basis. Janusz Kurtyka, president of the Institute of National Remembrance at the time, staunchly affirmed the thesis of the book while admitting that it does not contain a "hundred-percent" proof that Wałęsa was the agent Bolek, as some of the documents went missing during Wałęsa's presidency of Poland (1990–1995). He expressed hope the book would be subject to a wider debate."
Janusz Kurtyka died in the Smolensk plane crash. Within two hours of his death, all important documents and archives relating to the claims against Wałęsa were taken.
