Running a Samsung D8000 and internet connection speed around 11500 kbps. Strictly buffering every few seconds. Found this happens whenever I try to watch HD iPlayer. Normal mode is alright on other programmes.

Also found the Samsung just displays the top / bottom mode. It won't switch in properly. Samsung have only just recently released their latest 1019.2 firmware which cured the iPlayer play problem. Probably it needs some more mods.

I found some 3D on Youtube that works quite well so there can't be too much amiss even though some content also buffers a lot - pausing allows a certain amount of download but that seems to wait after a while for play back to continue. So it seems a complete download in pause cannot be achieved.

It's me again. Just tried Strictly on PC in HD. No buffering there at all. Could also play the 3D top / bottom with no problem (shame the PC and monitor doesn't do 3D).

And again! Just tried connecting the PC to the Samsung with a long HDMI lead. The TV manages to accept the top / bottom mode and there is no buffering Unfortunately the 3D images even when seen through the glasses don't appear to merge completely.

I have a Panasonic TX-L37DT30B tv and recieved the broadcasts on Saturday in 3d exceptionally well thank you. However I am now trying to get the i player 3d recordings via my broadband and although I am getting good top and bottom displays without buffering I can't switch to 3d mode either automatically of manually. My signal strenth is currently about 7.5mb and I am using a cable connection to my router.

I also have a Panasonic tv (P50GT30B) and via my Internet iPlayer get the split screen but cannot get any effect from the 3D button. I also recorded Strictly on my Humax HD PVR but it seems to only be a 2D picture as I cannot get any 3D effect at all. The signal is routed through a Onkyo HD receiver/amp. Currently feeling very disappointed as we really want to see the programme in 3D. Really hope the Freesat iPlayer works when it is up and running.

I own a Samsung D8000, Saturdays final was a real success from my point of view, well done to all involved in the production. I am able to receive the stream on i-player but on pressing the 3D button on the remote I get no menu to switch to top/bottom mode so therefor unable to receive the 3D image.

I own a Samsung 7000LU and am having the same problems as the other bloggers in not being able to switch the view. Do you think you will be able to fix this before the programme ends on iplayer?

Downloaded the iplayer file and was able to view it on my Nvidia 3D system. I cannot thoroughly review this yet as I am rebuilding my main system. The first thing that is really anoying is so much of the program is not in 3D. It reminds me of the frustration I experience with some BBC programs which are not all in HD. Surley you could have converted some of the 2D to 3D it is so easy to do. For me I found the 3d depth to be too shallow for my taste. Some of the shots had very little depth. The low resolution is rather a handicap but of course unavoidable in this situation. I wondered if you could not make a higher resolution version available for download.

I have one question. Why did you choose 720p50 for this trial?

Hi Andy. I have been reading another blog string of yours and found one reason for my problem. I recorded BBC1HD not BBC HD. I am sure for you guys it is all obvious but to us newbies it's much less so. I do hope the Freesat iPlayer works otherwise my lady will be sooo disappointed. But I would still like to know why iPlayer on my TV does not work. Also any chance of getting another go at the promo - I missed it and the write ups were good. Oh BTW I am able to watch YouTube 3D on my TV very easily.

On Freesat, I'm just getting "This programme is not currently available, please try again later [purple OK button]". It doesn't even try to buffer it - this appears within a second of selecting "high quality" (or normal quality, which I know shouldn't work anyway).

At some times my bandwidth should be sufficient for it to work, but at some peak times it probably isn't. I've tried ~6pm, and after midnight, and both times I got the above.

It's interesting to see that the capability is there to provide BBC HD programmes via Freesat iPlayer (assuming it can be made to work), and in 750p50 too. You'll have opened a can of worms there! ;-)

Further to my 3 earlier inputs of various ways of BBC 3D iPlayer viewing.

Just remembered I have a Samsung BD5500 blueray player connected which uses an external Hama Wireless LAN 300Mbps USB 2.0 WiFi Stick. Tried Strictly through the hub on that and it worked with very little buffering or stuttering. So that seems to prove there is more not quite right with the D8000 than the grayed out 3D settings. Using an ethernet connection is not really an option.

My earlier comment of the non merging top / bottom 3D images seen during viewing episode one was where the image had a sort of theatre dressing room frame with what looked like light bulbs - terrible cross talk. However things got really good when the programme had properly started. I think that the 3D effect probably was better than the broadcast SBS.

LG 50PX990 internet THX certified 3D telly - no go with built in iplayer app. Option to switch on 3D doesn't respond.

However have an attached media centre PC and that was brilliant. It is connected by HDMI and I use Sky's internet service (typically 16.5 mb connection). Flawless and very enjoyable - as I missed original tx. No buffering noticed - cracking playback!!

Tried the SCD on My Sony and it said "This programme is not currently available, please try again later ". I then tried through my Sony BluRay Player, and it played perfectly ! Which is odd, because they both use the same internet connection system. I then tried Freesat through my Humax Foxsat HDR and it gave the message. "This programme is not currently available, please try again later ". So I think it could be hardware issues with the two that don't play, because they all use the same internet connections. Is there a version I can download and play on my Nvidia 3D system ?

trevorjharris, may I ask where you found the file to download?

I have a HUMAX HDR-FOX T2 connected to a Panasonic TX-P55VT30B, both internet connected. Could not persuade the TV to switch into 3D when viewing through it's own iplayer app ...however, worked fine when using the Humax as input. Ran sweet with no buffering although the fast forward function had no effect. Internet speed average is 10mb.

There is a dedicated 3D button on the remote for LG 50PX990. Using the built in "Netcast" version of iplayer the 3D button doesn't bring up the various SBS, 2D-3D options etc. I must have a go using the iplayer option on my blu-ray player tonight. As mentioned external media centre fantastic.

I spoke too soon yesterday when I said my LG Cinema 3D tv and Sony S780 BD players iPlayers didn't show the 3D versions as they do now. Sadly I missed the live transmission.

I have BT infinity broadband with a fairly consistent 37Mbps (4.5MBps) and as well as the TV & BD player I have a powerful laptop on another HDMI input. On all three, iPlayer played fine with no buffering and the Bluray player reporting a steady 26mbps stream.

I did have problems with seeing the compression and an overall sense of low resolution though. I have worked in Stereo 3D post production for the last two years and much of my work is on Sky 3D so, in fairness, I am used to looking at top quality pictures, albeit in side by side mode, on the passive glasses professional 3D screens we use, so I did find the lower quality on iPlayer a distraction and the compression artefacts often cause slightly uncomfortable retinal rivalry. For some reason the 2D review content suffered worse with compression.

As a 3D show it looked great though. The scoring graphics were very good 3D.

Are there any plans to test iPlayer with a side by side picture?

Good to hear a professional view of the test. I must agree the 2D review content was very poor. At first I thought is was because it was 2D but now I suspect it was not even HD. I was suprised at how sharp the 3D looked I wondered if the eye compensates with side by side or top bottom video. Most of my 3D viewing is from full definition MVC files using Nvidia 3D active glasses. I decided against passive because of the reduced resolution.

As for compression artifacts this is something BBC employees cannot see for some reason. Psycologist have been investigating this disease for some time but until they find a cure we have to put up with low definition and compression artifacts.

Like many people I would like the BBC to abandon flash and use html5. The Youtube system gives several options for viewing including Nvidia 3D and anaglyph. I just tried watching the trial with optimised green maganta glasses and it looked OK.

Content not available on iplayer on PC just now - it was OK last night? Has it been removed for adjustment etc? Thanks

I have tried watching SCD 3D via the iplayer on the PS3, but that failed to start, so I then tried watching using the web browser on the PS3 (https://bbc.kongjiang.org/www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/bigscreen%29 but this message deisplays "this content doesn't semm to be working. Try again later'.

Regarding the live programme. The 3D content worked well for me. Though each time pre recorded video was shown the 3D mode automatically exited, giving the side-side view. I had to reactivate the 3D each time the live broadcast retuned. I am yet unable to discover whether this was a BBC broadcast issue or a TV setting I need to enable.

Hi Andy. Thanks for sorting the Freesat iPlayer. We watched it with my Humax Foxsat and we were whooping at the great effects. Has really made buying the 3D TV worthwhile. I am getting lots of buffering glitches however which are hard to watch through but there were also periods of stunning 3D. at first I could pause (I thought it would let the buffer catch up) but then it stopped working.

As for iPlayer on my TV. I don't have any aerial connected - terrestrial or satellite - as all our viewing is via the Humax Foxsat. I assume that the iPlayer just needs the Internet connection. Do I need to connect the satellite to get 3D?

Dear Andy, I have tried the iPlayer with Freesat and my Humax Foxsat-HDR, but it continues to complain about technical difficulties ! Although I notice Ken has just reported to be receiving just fine. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I have not tried my Sony since this morning, but will try again later.

Good news, and bad. It plays on my Toshiba Regza 3D TV (5mbps broadband connection) and shows top/bottom video with no buffering. The bad news is that the TVs remote control button simply says "Not Available" when I try to force it into 3D mode. I might try a firmware upgrade on the TV and see if that helps. The live broadcast on Saturday was fantastic though. Looking forward to StreetDance 3D on 1st January!

I have tried strictly 3D tonight on virgin tivo but the same problem seems to exist the file is top and bottom rather than side by side. Is this likely to be resolved soon.

I am using a Technika 3d TV and all other 3d content works fine.

I have a Sony KDL-40NX713, and the 3D version now plays from the built in iPlayer but the 3D menu only allows me to select simulated 3d, it does not show the usual Top Bottom / side by side options.

I'm having the same issues as on my Sony NX713 - I can't select top/bottom 3D mode (or SBS for that matter) when watching from iPlayer. I also get an error message when trying to view in SD but I think you explained the reasons for that in an earlier post. My 1.5Mbps internet connection isn't anywhere near man enough to stream HD without constant buffering. Shame really as I could have watched it through my PS3.

I'd just like to add my congrats to Andy and the BBC R&D team. My wife and I were blown away with the broadcast. I thought that the quality was excellent, particularly considering the bandwidth limitations of terrestial broadcasting compared to a BD-ROM. Far better than I was expecting. I whileheartedly commend the BBC for using our licence fee for this kind of trial. Well done to all involved.

Hi Andy. My set will take terrestrial or satellite. I tried all three TV options (freesat; DVB; Analogue) all to no avail. The iPlayer sits nicely as two pictures top/bottom for all selections but the auto 3D option and the manual top/bottom options have no effect at all. As for selection of the version of iPlayer, I select Vera Cast which brings up a menu and one option is iPlayer.

As already mentioned Samsung TV will not switch into 3D mode via the 3D button on the remote or via the menu system (seems that menu is not available while in 'internet mode'). There is another Samsung app that shows / streams 3D video (it's called Explore3D) and that automatically puts the TV in 3D mode so it is possible! ;)

PS3 app version does not work (will not load video) will now check via the URL...

The live broadcast was great and looked fantastic, Strictly really suited this delivery and the BBC should definitely be congratulated on delivering these 3D events (especially terrestrial).

We're watching on an LG 650T, through the iplayer app in the Smart TV. Or internet is quite fast and doesn't normally struggle playing the HD streams... I think it's rated around 8mb max.

I don't think it took any longer to buffer, and we were able to set the TV to the 3D mode specified. Quality of the 3D was fine, although not as good as bluray of course.

The main issue was the sound, the quality seems very poor and muddy - not much treble at all and occasionally distorted (just tried the non 3d HD stream and the sound was good as normal).

Looking forward to Wimbledon in 3D now :-)

I managed to watch the final of strictly come dancing final in 3D without problem as I had a choice as to how it was to be viewed as in sise by side. On trying to watch it again on I player tonight it did not give me the same choice and I was unable to watch it, as it appeared on my screen in top and bottom mode. Is there any way of being able to change this.

Andy, whether or not it will do any good, I have e'mailed Samsung about the problems with the D8000 with SCS 3D on the iPlayer and the buffering problems. I duly received a response instructing me to reset the TV by holding down the remote's EXIT button until the resetting sequence can be started.

It's most annoying to do this as all is lost but you never know if doing it will cure the problem. Of course it did not. Nor did the recommended reinstallation of the latest firmware (the same as that already installed previously). Interesting to note that the reset must have removed that same firmware because Samsung safeguard firmware updates so only new ones go on. Even if you have copies of previous firmware, you cannot downgrade or reinstal an existing one normally.

So I have duly responded and await a successful outcome. I am aware that you have also similarly communicated with Samsung.

I have a Panasonic TX-P42GT30B . I missed seeing the first part of the show in 3D because I was watching the wrong HD channel, but luckily found this forum before the second part was transmitted. The 3D worked really well, with the TV detecting the 3D signal, and so I wanted to re-watch the first part in 3D on iPlayer.
Normal iPlayer output always runs on this TV with no problems.
However, the TV didn't automatically detect a 3D signal, and when I selected 3D, nothing happened. I then manually selected the "Top and Bottom" option from the 3D menu, but again nothing happened.

I have tried My Sony 40HX803 again this morning without success, same issue as before, my Sony 3D BluRay player, plays it perfectly !, although it does not tell the TV to switch automatically. My Freesat Foxsat-HDR does not play..I am busy trying to find the model per your request @43 I do not have great bandwidth, about 4mbps max, perhaps this could be an issue with the TV.

hi andy, missed the actual show as was looking on bbc one hd maybe like others. tried it on my samsung d6530 last night and it comes up with the 2 screens top and bottom but you can't make any changes once you've pressed the 3d button so unviewable. I can't make any changes to colour settings etc once I'm in iplayer though so usually set them before I go into it. I tried setting my 3d to top bottom before going in but it didn't make a difference. buffering was no problem from what I watched but I'm on an average of 13mb. hope this helps. cheers

Looking at the posts from other Panasonic owners, there is a common symptom i.e. using the Panasonic Iplayer, the signal displays as top/bottom with no 3D detection. The 3D menus are not greyed out but selecting manually has no effect. However, supply an external signal (in my case via Humax Freeview HDR) then the signal is immediately recognised as 3D and requests the user to select, if required. All then works well. This suggests to me that the problem lies with the Panasonic Iplayer app, rather than the TV itself.

The message I get on the Sony TV is " This content does not seem to be working, please try again later ". And displays a " Back" button. I will try this over the nest 30 minutes and see what happens.

I will also try the same with the sat receiver. Apparently there is no model number only a model which is Foxsat-HDR, if that helps. I am continuing to look just the same.

I'm having the same trouble as a few others including GadgetChick. On my TX-P42ST30 and infact the whole panasonic range (I work in an electrical store) when accessing the iplayer through the Viera connect portal the image is just displayed as top and bottom images, no 3d at all. Like GadgetChick I tried manually setting top and bottom 3d and this changed nothing. All other conent through the iplayer works fine with no buffering problems.

I've tried two Samsung connected TVs, using iPlayer via Samsung's portal. On one the "3D" button is ignored, on the other it makes the message "not available" appear. So, like most others here, the "3D" content through iPlayer remains two pictures (top and bottom).

It works fine via an external Freesat STB, since the TV will happily switch to 3D mode with any HDMI input. Hopeless buffering every second at one location, but fine at another. Quality was good during talking heads (not noticeably worse than live broadcast), but a little blocky during some of the dancing.

I thought Strictly really benefited from 3D. To my eyes, the real challenge is to make different shots match well, rather than having very deep 3D one moment, and very shallow 3D the next - and the same object appearing at comparable 3D depth before and after a change of shot. I realise in films that they spend months fiddling with such things, while this was live. It's just something to think about for the future.

All in all though, I thought this was great and hope to see more!

Andy, virtually given up trying to sort problems out at Samsung. It seems to be aggravated by not getting through to the right people. The TV reset was NBG and surprisingly being asked what version HDMI lead was being used didn't go down too well either.

Fortunately there are other better ways of watching the 3D iPlayer, and others, through connected equipment such as PC or Samsung's BD5500 3D player.

Yes, my TV just displays the top/bottom split.
When I press the 3D button on the remote control, I get the option to select 3D or 2D-3D, as usual.
There is a manual option (by pressing the red button), which gives a list of different options - including side-by-side and top-and-bottom.
None of the options are greyed out.
I do an update whenever the TV prompts me, but I can't remember when the last update was done.

Andy, I have a Philips 40PFL9705 3D TV connected to a Humax Freesat HDR, together with a Philips BDP7500B2 3D Blu-Ray player. The TV and Blu-Ray player both have wireless internet access. The Humax box is connected by etherenet cable. This gives potentially 3 different ways of receiving iPlayer onto my TV.
BBC iPlayer works fine via the Humax application and there is no problem in this case in switching the TV to top/bottom mode when viewing Strictly in 3D. The iPlayer application installed on the Blu-Ray player works OK with normal 2D downloads but the signal from the Blu-Ray player make it impossible to set the TV into 3D mode to view 3D content. Using the net TV application installed on the TV itself, iPlayer will not work at all, either in 2D or 3D and gives a message requiring installation of Adobe Flash.
Returning to the Humax setup, the pictures were smooth and of good quality with no evidence of buffering. Captions were displayed correctly and I would judge the overall quality comparable to that of the recorded satellite program. The download speed of my internet connection using the iPlayer diagnostic tool is about 5200 kbps.
If I might make a comparison between the Strictly broadcast with the Wimbledon broadcast, 3D crosstalk was more apparent and annoying at Wimbledon because the way white lines on the tennis court didn't converge correctly in the images. It seems to me that manufacturers need to vastly improve 3D crosstalk performance of their TV's.

Virgin Tivo seems to be hiding the 3d shows from it's results in the iPlayer app. They were there yesterday evening (though not streaming reliably), gone this evening. Does anyone know if they'll be available and working on the Tivo service before the program expires?

Sony 40NX713: results show program just reports stream unavailable. Part 1 program, however is streaming the results show. Secondly, the stream is reporting itself as about 2hrs23 mins duration, but then time increments at about double rate (picture and sound suggest its playing at the correct speed, however).

Sony BluRay player BDP-S470: everything seems fine here.

I've noticed in the past that the bluray player seems to fetch a much higher quality stream than the TV (you can tell from the size of the BBC logo in the top corner). The TV's version lists the better stream as "higher quality" while the BluRay's version calls it HD.

BTW I've seen similar issues with the TV when trailing the YouTube 3d streams - you can't select top/bottom or side by side mode when using the TVs version of he player, but viewing through BluRay player works fine. Could it be because the stream has to be full 1080p for the tv to permit 3d (the bluray player will upscale the image prior to streaming over HDMI)?

Thanks Andy - On Tivo: Not listed under a full search but is listed under the BBC HD channel results for last Saturday. On trying to play it get an error message "There has been an error with this file, please try viewing something else", managed to get further last night with playback for about 60 seconds before crashing the iPlayer

been forgotten, when in fairness they the should have won. It sure doesn't help

Further to my first post No7 above I have followed all the comments and suggestions but inspite of having a solid top and bottom view on my TX-L37DT30B tv from the built in iPlayer via broadband I still cannot view in 3D. I have also now switched to Freesat on the same set and here again get good double view but cannot convert to 3D either automatically or manually using the red button. The 3D works well on Utube. I have emailed Panasonic help line to see if they can help as it does seem to be an iplayer apps problem on the set. Only hope we have got now is if you can get the BBC produce the show on a blueray disk!

ive go a 50 inch panasonic gt30b tv and i watched street dance in 3d with surround sound and got to say it was amazing please bbc put more 3d programmes on :) who agrees ?????

First of all, a congratulations is in order Andy for the recent 3d broadcasts. I just wanted to highlight a important issue that has cropped up again recently on BBC1HD, I first noticed this problem a few months ago, and it had gone away, but came back last night during the royal bodyguard. The issue is a slight but equally annoying crackle in the audio especially noticed when someone speaks, I have found a similar problem recently on ITV 2+3HD alnong with other people. As his problem has only been effecting the mentioned channels I have ruled out my own equipment. Last night the issue was particularly bad on the news at ten where a line on green dots was also visible in the bottom half of the screen. This issue was apparent on both bbc1hd and bbc 1w mids via sattelite but not on bbc news channel. This suggests to me there is or was an issue with the bbc 1 play out centre.

I noticed that samsung released a firmware update on the 24th which now allows you to select top/bottom and side by side when viewing via SmartTV.
I expect this would have stopped the options from being greyed out on strictly 3D, but by the time I realised there was an update, the programme had disappeared from iPlayer.
Andy, would there be any chance of making a test file available for TV iPlayer so we can test that it's now fixed?

With new set (LG 47LW650T) passive I watched the recording - so much better than my "old" active set. As Andrew Clark said immediately above - how about a short test sequence (even the test card) on iplayer to test with our tellies?

I was able to watch the BBC-HD broadcast live on my Sony HX903. I Selected Side-by-Side and it played out fine.
I was not able to play the iPlayer version though on the iPlayer app built into the Sony HX903.
I also tried playing it the iPlayer App on a Boxee Box and this was not able to play it either.

Its a real shame that it is still not available on iPlayer or indeed a test sequence.

Andrew Clark (83) reckons that Samsung did a firmware update 24/12 that cured the iPlayer 3D playing options that were greyed out. Anyway until there is a test sequence available I would never be able to tell.

This claim is in contrast with the statement I received from Samsung 27/12 that reads:

"We are currently aware that 3D does not function with the BBC I Player app. This app is developed and maintained by the BBC who must maintain their app to function with our TV's at all times and I would strongly suggest that you contact the BBC and refer them to this error with their application if it is not functioning within the required parameters of the TV". I copied this from my post 5 on Ant Miller's R&D blog which seems to have been overlooked because this blog had been closed.

Samsung currently have firmware 1021.2 on their site which claims to improve Internet Connection when using Smart Hub or Applications, support 3D MPO file (?), and suppport BBC & BBc i8Player connection etc. Frankly I can't tell the difference between this and previous.

My Samsung D8000 still can't run iPlayer HD or Samsung 3D Apps without constant buffering yet, it can run flawlessly when LAN connectd to a TPLink wireless access point. Similarly my Samsung BD5500 'Smart' 3D Player can also run wirelessly the BBC iPlayer HD flawlessly. Complained to Samsung about this and living in hope of some solution.

Happy new year Andy, just an update on the sound issue on BBC 1HD, it came back a bit last night for some reason it only effects the channel at random times. Also, is there any way of finding out what scalling method the sky+hd boxes use along with the deinterlacer, this may explain why bbc1+bbchd channels don't look as good on sky hd compared to other stb's? Thanks for replying Andy, much appreciated, My stb's is a sky+Hd amstrad drx 890 latest software, I have also noticed the picture issue via freeview hd on my Technika STBHDIS2010 so seems like both platforms. As I have said before it only seems to effect certain scenes on some program's, very odd! On the sound issue on bbc 1hd it has been ok for a few days, so I will keep an eye on it.

for xyzbird - your question mark after "support 3D MPO file (?)".

That is a file format used in some 3D cameras (like my Fujifilm W3 digital camera) to capture 3D piccies. I can plug the camera into my telly and see 3D snapshots on screen. Hope that helps.

Just thought I would update you Andy, the odd picture issue is still effecting both bbc HD channels on DSat and i am now doing testing on the Freeview HD platform using my Technika STBIS2010 STB and discovered the same problem is also effecting Channel 4HD on Freeview HD but channel 4 HD on DSat is fine! I have come to the conclusion that it is an encoder issue on your transponders/Muxes. It is very annoying especially on dark scenes. Hope this info helps.
Along with my testing I am testing the difference in Picture Quality between Freeview HD and Sky+HD or DSat platforms. I am doing this by connecting both STB's to my Sony av amp via HDMI and am using the BBC HD Preview right now, both on the same TV and set up, and the picture from my Freeview HD box at 1080p50 is much better than my Sky+HD which is unfortunate for me as I use SKY+HD primarily the Freeview HD box is just for testing and backup- I wish it was the other way round.
This has got me thinking, there is nothing wrong with you using 1440 as I've seen on my Freeview HD box the picture is sharp and full of detail. Unfortunately it is how different STB's cope with the 1440 image that effects the end result of picture quality and the SKY+HD STB does not cope well as I've seen compared to Freeview HD it has less detail and is much softer. The SKY +HD box does cope well with 1920 images and this meant when BBC HD was running at 1920 it looked much better on my SKY+HD box but the difference was less noticeable on Freeview HD, and even now when I compare Channel 4HD on both platforms there is little difference despite one using 1920.
So in short I wish you could run both HD channels on DSat at 1920 so the picture quality across both platforms would match, and to get round the poor scalling in the sky boxes.

N.B just caught the BBC HD Testcard and compared on both platforms, on Freeview HD I could see more of the gratings, and on Sky the gratings seemed to jump a little.
