OU/BBC co-productions
The Open University (OU) is the largest academic institution in the UK and a world leader in flexible distance learning. Since it began in 1969, the OU has taught more than 2 million students worldwide and currently has over 170,000 students.
The OU has had a unique educational partnership with the BBC since 1971 and today focuses on supporting the University’s social mission by extending reach and engagement. Each year the OU co-produces a wide range of television, audio – radio and podcasts - digital and social content with the BBC. Recent series for television include, Wild Isles, Inside Our Autistic Minds, Once Upon a Time in Northern Ireland, A Special School, Women Who Changed Modern Scotland, Parole and Secret Genius of Everything with Hannah Fry. Radio co-productions include All in the Mind, The Bottom Line, BBC Inside Science and More or Less for Radio 4 and on Radio 5Live Sports Desk Special and The Big Green Money Show. The OU playlist on BBC Ideas has generated over 6m views from 60 videos.
OU programmes achieved more than 285m viewing and listening events last year which prompted more than 525k visits to our broadcast related content, hosted on the OU’s Broadcast and Partnerships website.
