She is the most senior woman in the cabinet, and has been arguably the most significant woman in the Conservative Party since 2002, when as party chairman she coined the phrase the “nasty party”. Her diagnosis of the party’s image problem led the way to modernisation and her work devising the party’s ‘A list’ is credited with increasing the number of women MPs.
