Baroness Ashton is the main co-ordinator and representative of agreed foreign and security policy within the European Union and represent and negotiates on behalf of the member states. She was previously Leader of the House of Lords and then Commissioner for Trade in the EU.

She worked for CND in the late 70's, and then in education and training. She was made a life peer by Tony Blair in 1999, serving as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Department for Education and Skills in 2001, and subsequently in the Department for Constitutional Affairs and Ministry of Justice. She became a Privy Councillor in May 2006.
