Ian Chesterton taught science at London’s Coal Hill School in the 1960s… When a friend and colleague, Barbara Wright, asked him to help her investigate the mystery surrounding one of their students, Susan, he was initially sceptical but eventually agreed. The two teachers discovered Susan’s ‘home’ was what appeared to be a police box in a junkyard, but when they followed her inside they found the TARDIS and were soon whisked away from present day Earth and thrown into a world of adventure.

Ian

Ian thus became one of the Doctor’s earliest travelling companions. He was at first understandably shocked and amazed by the places that the TARDIS took him to, such as prehistoric Earth, the Sense Sphere, the terrifying Space Museum and Skaro, home planet of the Daleks.

But he adjusted with remarkable fortitude, proving his courage, intelligence and resourcefulness. He was averse to fisticuffs but if the occasion demanded it, the teacher turned fighter and overcame more than one opponent with his fists.

Throughout all his adventures he remained eager to return home and initially, his relationship with the Doctor was rocky, blighted by bickering and mistrust. But eventually these good companions became fond of one another and when Ian and Barbara finally made it back to 1960s England, the Doctor watched them go with more than a hint of sadness and regret.
