Profile: Oliver Gallant
Filmmaker Oliver Gallant on how a long held dream led him to making this Fresh short.
Why did you pick this subject for Fresh?
I’d always dreamt of riding a motorbike to the Arctic Circle. It seemed like the great adventure.
I’d always dreamt of riding a motorbike to the Arctic Circle. It seemed like the great adventure.
What motivated you to make this film?
Primarily, the challenge. Would the bike take me that far? Could I ride to the Arctic Circle? I also wanted to find out more about people’s perception of happiness in different countries.
What equipment did you use to shoot the film?
Mostly shot on a Canon 60D and some handy cams for the bike.
Tell us about post-production.
Edited initially in Final Cut and then moved to Premier before export. Soundtrack provided by Wes Finch and scored by Jonathon Fletcher.
Who/what inspires you?
The trip was partly inspired through books I read as a child. Ted Simon’s ‘Jupiter’s Travels’ documents his four-year journey around the world on a Triumph motorcycle in 1979. ‘Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance’ by Ronald L. Disanto is a beautiful blend of motorcycle travel and philosophy.
What are your plans for the future?
Having a full time job in radio, my recent trips have been shorter. However, I have some solid ideas for future films. I’m interested in journeys that aren't necessarily measured by miles. Ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
What is the most important thing you have learned so far?
Be authentic. During the edit I found the least staged, the most natural and casual shots, were the most engaging.
