Yvette Cooper is the Shadow Home Secretary. She is one of the highest-ranking women in the Labour Party. Her political career is marked by a series of firsts: in 2001 she became the first minister to take maternity leave, and she is now one half of the first married couple in the Cabinet. In 2008 she became the first female Chief Secretary to the Treasury.

In 1991 she won a Kennedy scholarship to study at Harvard, and advised on the Clinton presidential campaign of ’92. She was an Economics columnist and leader writer at the Independent from 1995-1997, when she ran for Parliament. Although she declined to run for the Labour Party leadership in 2010, citing a desire to spend more time with her children, she is tipped by some to be a future Prime Minister.
